'My Husband'

I have a long standing, very close group of girlfriends (6 of us altogether). We know each other's husbands/boyfriends/partners /children/parents very well.

The six of us were together a few days ago and one of the group kept referring to her husband as 'my husband' in any sentence that involved his name. It stood out as we just normally say our husband's names. We all know who he is, very well. Then she started doing it with 'my daughter' and she is my godchild?!

It drove me nuts, particularly the husband referring as his name is in most sentences she's says anyway. In the end I said 'who, you mean Clive, we know who he is!'

It is odd if she's suddenly doing it.

As a child amongst our cousins, I could never say 'went shopping with MUM' 'MUM said xyz' I would always use MY mum, even though they all know my mum very very well. They would just say mum or dad when talking about their parents, I noticed that I neeeded to specify my mum or my dad and did wonder why I find it hard to just say their names without the possessive term.

I do this and until someone pointed it out to me I hadn't really noticed. It comes from an unspoken assumption that if I refer to husband, sister, child, whoever, by name then people won't know who I'm talking about without further explanation.

@Peggytheredhen yeah but it's your grandma not hers, it would irk you if she said my mum (assuming it's her mum and not mil)

I often say to my children 'your sad' 'your brother'
