'My Husband'

MudyTrudy · 01/10/2021 14:39

I have a long standing, very close group of girlfriends (6 of us altogether). We know each other's husbands/boyfriends/partners /children/parents very well.

The six of us were together a few days ago and one of the group kept referring to her husband as 'my husband' in any sentence that involved his name. It stood out as we just normally say our husband's names. We all know who he is, very well. Then she started doing it with 'my daughter' and she is my godchild?!

It drove me nuts, particularly the husband referring as his name is in most sentences she's says anyway. In the end I said 'who, you mean Clive, we know who he is!'

I always refer to my sister as my sister. My husband refers to her by name and I always have to clarify who he means!

AryaStarkWolf · 01/10/2021 15:08

@hellcatspangle

Does she think one of you fancies him?
Well the OP says she did it when referring to her daughter too so I doubt that's the reason

Maybe she's spending too much time posting on Mumsnet and is speaking how she'd type :p

I’ve told my own brother about “my dad always XYZ” and had to correct myself given a) he knows him and b) it’s his dad too. Relieved to hear I’m not the only one! And yes it’s because the vast vast majority of people I talk to do not share a dad with me.

Maybe she’s been having a good old moan about Clive at work OP and is in practice at referring to him like that?

HedgehogintheFog · 01/10/2021 15:09

More often I do this the other way round - chatting with work colleagues and referring to 'Mike' like they know who he is!!

FoxgloveSummers · 01/10/2021 15:09

@AryaStarkWolf you’ll know that if she starts saying “my DeeAitch was telling me...”

I spent the whole weekend talking to my DD, whom I was visiting, referring to John. She kept looking at me quizzically and saying 'you mean dad?' I think it can be habit.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 01/10/2021 15:13

I'm sat here thinking about me being out for dinner with friends, discussing something and me referring to DH as my husband, despite my friends knowing him for 20+ years.

Yeah that would be really weird.

My husband and his siblings always say "my Dad" when they're talking to each other, I think it's pretty funny. Also my husband always says his brothers full name when he's talking about eg "I called in to John Smith today"

**No real names used :p

Siquijor · 01/10/2021 15:15

@Asleanna

Think you've had a name change fail Op!
No bother I change it every week anyway!
WildFlowerBees · 01/10/2021 15:17

My very good friend does this also op, known them years her dh and mine are great friends we see each other quite a lot but she'll still say 'my husband' 'my husband made me the nicest hot chocolate the other night' sort of thing. Batshit.

apalledandshocked · 01/10/2021 15:17

@frogswimming

It's probably because she often talks to people who don't know her family, like work colleagues. She's got into the habit of referring to her husband and children without their names for people who don't know them.
I think this! She probably doesn't realise she's doing it. I know someone who always referred to her husband as "my current husband"

She could have completely outted herself and called him DH!

annacondom · 01/10/2021 15:26

I also prefer it to the other way round. A friend does it, it's very wearing trying to remember if Pete is her sister's DH, or a bloke she works with, or the gardener.

Mermaidpool · 01/10/2021 15:32

Odd if she's only just started doing it but I was talking to my sister recently and she said 'i saw my mum' as if we don't have the same one! so guessing it's habit from talking to people who don't know him

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 01/10/2021 15:33

Weird but not worth a thread, tbh. Don’t give it brain space.

FortunesFave · 01/10/2021 15:34

I always think it's weird on MN when people say "my baby" when the Father is in the picture.

SVRT19674 · 01/10/2021 15:35

My husband and his siblings do this about their mother: your mother did this or that...ehrmm you mean "Mum", it sounds weird to me, but then i don´t overthink it either.

Thatsplentyjack · 01/10/2021 15:36

I have a friend that does this bit with her sister. We all know her sister really well, we were all pretty close when we were younger. I find it really odd, but then the two sisters refer to their mum or dad as "my mum" and "my dad" when they are talking to each other 🤣 even weirder.

NorthernLion · 01/10/2021 15:49

Is she called Pat Schweppes?

And does she listen to the St Elwicks Neighbourhood Committee Newsletter podcast?

MakingM · 01/10/2021 15:49

Maybe she’s making a point and it does seem to have struck home rather well.

MrsFlinch · 01/10/2021 15:51

It’s is a bit odd if she’s just started doing it, maybe she just forgot to switch back into friend mode, but at least you knew who she was talking about.
Nothing worse than someone when talking about other people refer to them by their names and you’ve absolutely no idea who the feck they’re talking about!

Ive nearly referred to my husband as Dee-Aitch, when chatting to people who don’t know him!
Thankfully managed to stop myself in time before I made myself look like a right plank! 😂

Saoirse82 · 01/10/2021 16:01

My SIL does this. We are all in a close group of friends but when referring to DH she often calls him 'my brother' even though he's part of the same friendship circle. I've asked her about it out of curiosity as I always find it odd sounding especially as he's my husband but she she says it's just force of habit. I know there's no ulterior motive behind it, its just something she does and I expect it's the same for your friend.
