To think this is far too much food?

519 replies

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

@Viviennemary

Only 12 portions. This family must be so greedy. You need to get a grip on this excess eating. I hope it was low fat mince.
😂

This thread is gold 🤣

SylvanasWindrunner · 01/10/2021 11:52

@MaenadsJustWannaHaveFun I did but I confess it was probably cheap wine as I don't drink much so it was some random plonk I found.

Cinnamon was my mum's addition - I had never used it before, but when I came home from hospital after having DD she had made a giant vat of bolognaise for us and it was the best thing I had ever tasted after a week of no sleep and hospital food! And when I quizzed her as to how it was so good, she revealed the cinnamon thing (and a pinch of sugar to bring pot the tomatoes)!

Wazzzzzzzup · 01/10/2021 11:54

@SylvanasWindrunner I always add cinnamon to tomato based dishes. It hides, but brings up something else. It's really good! Just a tiny bit

queenMab99 · 01/10/2021 11:57

I wouldn't mind if they had eaten it, but I do get cross when children are given huge amounts, which they then don't eat, so it is wasted. Also if I had to start cooking when I got home from work, having already prepared a meal, I would be annoyed.

mynameiscalypso · 01/10/2021 12:00

@pelosi

And still nobody is picking up that the selfish DH in this story left his working late wife with no food. Where are the LTB brigade? Slackers.

I have picked it up but I’m being decidedly ignored Grin 😂

To be fair to OP's DH, I thought she said that he had rheumatoid arthritis and struggled with cooking but did I make that up?
AmyDudley · 01/10/2021 12:03

I can make 500gm of mince feed a family of seventeen for a whole year and still have change out of a farthing.

pelosi · 01/10/2021 12:03

True, but he did manage to make the pasta, and if he struggles to cook he should be even more appreciative that a pot of mince needs to feed all 3 people, not 2.

Christinatherabbit · 01/10/2021 12:05

I thinks it's probably too much but one of my DDs aged 9 could probably eat the lot (she loves bolognaise) and is really slim...we have no idea where she puts it all. I'm not really sure the point of this post? It's too much but unless they are seriously overweight isn't exactly an issue. Home made bolognaise and pasta is probably healthier for them than sharing a pizza or junk food. It's irriating to have to cook but a bit odd you are upset enough to ask for advice over it. I would have just made something else for myself and then not thought about it again tbh.

user1471538283 · 01/10/2021 12:08

My DS and a friend that age could easily eat all that with pasta. It wouldn't bother me as long as it was eaten.

Christinatherabbit · 01/10/2021 12:09

Oh I've just seen it was literally just mince and onion. In that case it probably wasn't too much. Ours feeds 2a3c but I add, mushrooms, onions, Carrots sometimes corgette if I have it 2 tins of chopped Tom's as well as fresh herbs, stock etc. With just mince it wount go as far

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/10/2021 12:20

@Brefugee sincere apoligies, it was supposed to be lighthearted, it's not something I would normally do.
Cake not a shit piece Grin

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/10/2021 12:23

I can also spell apologies generally speaking.
I think the selfish dh thing may have been covered in the internalised misogyny comment?

mushroom3 · 01/10/2021 12:33

I think this would be portion for 3, 500g mince, some veg, tomato sauce. 250g of meat per child is too much. That's about 9oz of meat each before the veg and tomato sauce, larger than a standard steak which isn't padded out with veg.

HalzTangz · 01/10/2021 12:36

I use a 500g pack when I do bolagnese (add mushrooms, tomatoes, herbs, onion, garlic, tomato puree, often other bits that need using up like peppers), served with Pasta we get 3 adult portions. If I made it without the extras it would be 2 portions

zippityzip · 01/10/2021 12:37

@ZenNudist

I know you didn't specify exactly what size saucepan but we aren't talking milk pan and most pans up from the milk pan would hold more bolognaise than 2 portions.

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

How they managed to put away a whole pan I don't know. Even of your basic 1 onion plus tin tomato.

Oh we have a competitive under eater winner over here.

The point is she came home after working late and none of the dinner she had cooked in advance was left for her.
mushroom3 · 01/10/2021 12:41

Too little pasta was used. If it's a 400-500g pack, I would have cooked the whole packet for 4, this is how they ate so much meat, 250g mince each but only around 70-80g of pasta each. (half a pack cooked and shared between 3). The had mainly meat with a bit of pasta!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/10/2021 12:43

@SummerHouse

Just to explain on my piece of string. I do not have string privilege. This piece of string services all our family's string needs (16 of us). Once string is used for one purpose, we hand wash it and reuse it for another purpose. Sometimes we twist in some grass or hair if we need it to go a little further. This string has been in the family for many generations and handed down.
New to the string game, then. My family has a tendril from the East African savannah passed down since before we descended from the trees. We have no need to eat. A little chew on the tendril, full belly for a month.
HouseOfFire · 01/10/2021 12:47

@Percypigg

Did you rinse the mince??
eh???
applechips · 01/10/2021 12:49

Sorry to derail but am wondering if anyone can help. I have a piece of string and just wondering how long it is? It's a standard piece of string. TIA

Far too long for a reasonable person. There are people struggling to find enough string for their family and then there is you, showing off with your string of privilege

I think Pazuzu wins mumsnet 2021!

GeidiPrimes · 01/10/2021 12:52

Someone just saying that add a tin of beans to theirs?

I've actually had the misfortune of eating this! I remember thinking, why would somebody ruin an otherwise delicious lasagne in this manner.

Berkeys · 01/10/2021 12:59

Personally, I find it weirdest that you are eating a cow at all.

gingercat02 · 01/10/2021 13:00

110g of lean mince is an adult portion so you are right OP that a 500g pack would serve at least 4 adults. 4-6 yo need 70g 7-10yo 90g each

bananafish · 01/10/2021 13:04

Your husband should have left you some, but I wouldn't be surprised at two hungry kids polishing off the lot.

I also love a good bolognese/ragu discussion. English inspired ragu bears scant resemblance to any Italian version, north or south, with the often beef only base, and additions of random vegetables like peppers and courgettes, but I expect it's tasty in its own way Grin
