To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

@LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit So what would you suggest the OP wears instead?

Ironically I feel more comfortable and can walk much farther in a one inch heel than a ballet flat. The flat shoes give me a pain in my heel.

Runner type shoes don't feel acceptable in a aemi formal setting eg work, so a black boot with a small heel means I look tidy and can still do errands at lunchtime.

Looubylou · 30/09/2021 20:51

As an almost 52 year old with bunions, my advice to younger ladies is flats or wedges. Keep heels for really special occasions. It's just not worth it. Think of your future.

Looubylou · 30/09/2021 20:53

I've just realised, I'm actually nearly 53 - see heels must affect your brain too - must be the altitude 😂

SmellyOldOwls · 30/09/2021 20:57

Stilettos make me think of Lesley Joseph's character in Birds of a Feather 😬

Delatron · 30/09/2021 20:59

Agree that pointy thin heels are out.

But with the trend for wide leg jeans what will we wear under them for a night out? Trainers don’t feel dressed up enough. Flats and the hem will drag along the floor. As said we still need a mid heel boot.

stopgap · 30/09/2021 21:01

They’ll be back. The fashions shows these last two weeks were awash with spaghetti strap dresses and strappy heels.

Catlover77 · 30/09/2021 21:27

@Sooverthemill

"Ladies"? Wtf
Exactly! I wear heels for work but I’m a woman

High fashion produces all sorts of nonsense. It doesn’t translate to the high street.

I'm def wearing trainers or flats a lot more now. Had my heeled boots on though a few times in the last week. I feel I look so much smarter and more confident too.

I've also dug out my ugg boots for morning nursery drop offs. Oh they are soooo comfy and warm.

Aria999 · 01/10/2021 01:16

I love my heels (some of them are very beautiful) but I never wear them any more.

Only go out to restaurants and then they're under the table so what's the point?

I can't actually walk in them now anyway and have got used to my shorter, wider silhouette without them.

Xiaoxiong · 01/10/2021 08:48

I've been wearing a pair of low (under 1 inch) block heels with an ankle strap to absolute death to every party and gathering in the last 6 months while my heels languish in the wardrobe. On Wednesday we had a party at home, and I thought - why not wear some heels, we're just at home anyway and I won't have to walk in them... I really felt I looked ridiculous and god they were uncomfortable! I have also forgotten how to walk properly in them.

I'm now in the market for at least three pairs of shoes to wear for occasions where previously I would have worn heels - some pointy leopard flats, another pair of low block heels with an ankle strap and some pumps of some kind.

I know I'm going to end up wearing shoes like my grandmother now, she had about 10 identical pairs of low patent leather pumps with bows on the front that I thought were desperately old-ladyish. I feel like they were Christian Louboutin or something similar.

DanceItOut · 01/10/2021 17:23

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I tend to wear boots over trainers some have a small heel, some have a chunky heel, some are flat. I do still have two pairs of proper heels but I’ve only wore each pair a handful of times. I do also own trainers. But I prefer my boots, flat ones for when I know I’ll be walking a lot or heeled ones for when I’m dressing a bit smarter and not walking as much. I grew up being told to never walk alone in shoes you can’t run in.

Scbchl · 01/10/2021 17:26

I wear them as minimally as I can!

Mirw · 01/10/2021 17:33

Wear what you want. I don't ever wear heels. My choice.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 01/10/2021 17:33

Have never ever worn a heel - too uncomfortable.they are the step down from foot binding IMO. I do like a Fly London wedge for a bit of height. I have to be comfortable.

FreddieMercurysCat · 01/10/2021 17:38

I cannot walk in heels. I seriously can’t. So I live in flats (usually trainers or boots) all the time.

Madamesosostris · 01/10/2021 17:38

Heels = the patriarchy. Anyone who disagrees is in the grip of false consciousness.

Shona52 · 01/10/2021 17:44

Can remember the last time I wore heels. I finds them so sore and uncomfortable after a while so never keen to wear them

Lndnmummy · 01/10/2021 17:49

I went to the office today for the first time in forever. I loved getting a dress, tights and heels on. Loved it. I’m probably really dated and most of my team were in trainers but we were just all really happy to meet up in person and enjoyed being “out”. The muscles in my feet have changed and I gratefully pulled on my trainers on the way home but I loved the few hours in my heels.

Carpedimum · 01/10/2021 17:51

I’ve been a convert to flats & trainers for some time, but I’m going to a wedding next weekend and my lovely vintage style dress will look best with heels, though nothing taller than 3in! I was in Glasgow city centre recently & there were a lot of wobbling women in sky high heels looking pretty ridiculous (and vulnerable!)

caspersmagicaljourney · 01/10/2021 17:58

I think heels have gone out of fashion it seems.
I haven't worn heels for about 10 years - I just don't find them comfortable any more. If I want to look smart I wear low block heels as these seem a good compromise.

Sarbears28 · 01/10/2021 18:02

I've not worn heels in years as I'm a tall 6ft woman and my dh is 5ft10. I feel as though I'm taking a child out when I wear heels. But saying that I do miss them and used to love wearing my 6-8inch heels. They made me feel so feminine, I liked the way I walked in them and they made my ankles look slimmer. But that's just me.

Enterthedragons · 01/10/2021 18:04

You can do what you like, but think about it. Why make ourselves feel uncomfortable/hinder our ability to run etc so other people can perceive us in a certain way (e.g ‘more glamorous’ ‘longer legs.’) Isn’t your comfort more important than what other people think? It’s just another thing that women are ‘supposed’ to do that men aren’t.
