To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable,but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

@EishetChayil

I've never worn heels on principle. Why make it harder to walk/run?

I think it was Oscar de all Renta who said he made shoes that would make women feel as if they had a man walking behind them; many women commented that they would feel endangered, and want to run.

This - for fucks sake we need shoes and pants and bras that are comfortable not for the benefit of the man eyeing us up and down so we feel attractive.

We should feel attractive for our brains and personality

CathyorClaire · 01/10/2021 21:31

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I never ever wore them to work in the 80’s! Everyone l o knew didn’t, so not ‘everybody’ wore them!
Everyone in the sector I worked in if you've really got to nit-pick Hmm
JoanWilderbeast · 01/10/2021 21:36

In your defence OP I think there has been a sea change in vociferous opinion on here about the choice of heels going from being personal and therefore empowering, to the complete opposite..

Zerrin13 · 01/10/2021 21:50

So pleased women are seeing sense and ditching torturous, ridiculous footwear.

BippityBoppity87 · 01/10/2021 22:00

I love wearing flats. Trainers, Brogues, DM's. Pretty much never wore anything else when I was out

But I really do love the sound that high heals
make in films/programmes. I think yes! And you see them walking they look pretty good. Not something you could achieve in flats

So I don't think they're dated just yet. More of a "I can do the same as a man does, but I can do it heals" per se

Sorry. I know this isn't what you were asking, just giving a different perspective

JFM27 · 01/10/2021 22:32

I was always a high heel wearer but now its trainers,or chunky heeled sandals or boots. Ive a couple pairs of 2 inch heels i can wear but
I usually suffer next day if i wear them.Most of my friends are same whatever their age

I look at very high heels and know i just cant .i never imagined wearing trainers,but of course now fashionable and mine do tend to be the glam ones definitely not basic.lol

SallyWD · 01/10/2021 22:41

I heard some young women talking about this on the train today. They were all dressed up but only one of them was wearing heals. She was really annoyed that no one else wore heals but her friends all said "Who wears heals these days? It's only older ladies who do". I've never worn heals (only a couple of times at weddings) and I hadn't noticed they'd gone out of fashion!

Proseccoagain · 01/10/2021 22:41

Well, at 5ft nothing I need all the height I can get, so shall carry on wearing heels. I feel uncomfortable in flats, always have done.

VestaTilley · 01/10/2021 22:47

Why do women need to be glamorous? Heels are bad for your legs and back.

I ditched them and make up years ago - haven’t looked back.

PenelopeW · 01/10/2021 23:11

I had not noticed that high heels were fading away, but I applaud it! I liken the really high stilettos to Chinese foot binding - torture just to look good and definitely not for the 21st Century enlightened woman.

I’ve found it seems to be the older ladies that wear heels now. They’ve become quite dated

Don't think so. Think it's we older ladies that have passed the need for comfort and healthy backs onto younger women actually. Heels are SO bad for feet, posture, backs etc. The only way I'd wear them is if I was cabbed to a place and back to walk from the cab to a table and back to a cab and then only for a dare!

browneyes77 · 01/10/2021 23:28

I’ve never really been a heels girl (always been a bit of a tomboy type anyway). 3 inch heels are about all I can manage for things like work shoes or nice shoes for going out etc.

I have low arches on my feet which makes it hard to wear anything that pushes my foot up further than it wants to go (ballet in block shoes as a youngster was a killer!) and I also have two knackered, weak ankles, from perpetually going over on them.

I’m a Converse plimsole girl in the summer and a knee high or calf boot with a flat or small wedge heel, in the Autumn/Winter Grin

nanbread · 01/10/2021 23:38

I haven't worn heels for about 5 years, not even to a wedding. I wear trainers 80% of the time, and comfy sandals or flat ankle boots the rest.

Does liking a heel make me less of an enlightened 21st century feminist then?
Mamanyt · 02/10/2021 00:32

I've never in my life worn anything higher than a 1" heel, called a "kitten heel" over here in the USA. Never. Except in boots, I've gone as high as 2" in boots, but the heels were thick and chunky and solid.

Campervan69 · 02/10/2021 00:41

I think it's brilliant to see women in flats. Just got back from a week in Europe and the only women I saw in heels looked dated. The fashionable look was very much dresses or any other outfit with trainers/flats.

CorianderAndCream · 02/10/2021 01:30

Don't know how you all did it tbh. Boots and trainers for me at 26. Anything else HURTS. Tbf I have horribly tight calves

DuchessOfDisaster · 02/10/2021 02:36

@PartyPotato

I love the dress & trainers look, I do it a lot in the summer. Completely flat shoes make my feet hurt so I need a tiny bit of elevation, so my sneakers and sandals tend to be chunky or have a bit of a platform. All of my actual high heels are boots save for one pair of red strappy heels that come out at special occasions because I just love them so much, I don’t care if they hurt after an hour!
I've been practically living in tea dresses/sundresses and Converse for the last 7 years at least.

Just chucked my long term partner, one of his gripes was me wearing these outfits and the other not wearing heels.

DrunkUnicorn · 02/10/2021 07:37

I plan to wear heels on the days I work from office. After 18m of flats, I am sure heels will hurt like Hell. But they make my legs look great, and after 18 harried months of WFH and social isolation, I need to get back to the old me!

Beautybunny · 02/10/2021 07:42

I have two pairs of beautiful flats, silk type jewelled from Marks and the same from Boden. I wear formal business clothes, suits, dresses etc. I tend to wear a chunky ballet pump and pointed flats as I am tall and have sore feet. I would love some low heals but nothing appeals in the shops. I have posh trainers too which I wear with a black trouser suit. I wore four inch heels on my wedding day but that was decades ago and I certainly wouldn't wear heals around town. Too vulnerable.

HoppingPavlova · 02/10/2021 07:45

I’ve noticed DD and friends don’t have/wear heels. They claim they are not at all fashionable and only for ‘old people’ so I’m guessing they have had their day, for now at least.

DeborahAnnabel · 02/10/2021 07:54

Have been wearing heels all week. But definitely wear trainers more than I did previously.

Hattie765 · 02/10/2021 08:09

I stopped wearing heels (which I always loved) when I got pregnant. I tried to go back to them after giving birth and they made my back and legs hurt so much. I hadn't realised before how much strain they put on your body so I never wore them after that.

Barney60 · 02/10/2021 08:55

Dont own a pair of trainers, but love comfy flats, have small heels if im going out though.

RampantIvy · 02/10/2021 09:23

@GoodWeatherforDucks

I wonder if one group who would be really excited about not wearing heels any more, would be the female airline cabin crew, who seem to be obliged to wear them still? I also wonder how many hours the male cabin crew would be happy to wear such insane heeled footwear for, before hobbling off the job? In the event of an emergency, even those flattish shoes the women crew wear while the flight is underway, would be useless, compared to the male cabin crew’s laced up ones with some tread on them.
Every time I have flown I have noticed that female cabin crew wore heels in the airport and then change into flats while working in the plane.
