To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

I was having a conversation recently with a friend about clubs / bars not giving entry to people wearing trainers/ jeans. It just seems so weird now!

It made men in the 90's/00's dress up in the weird shirt, jeans/chino and loafer combination and look like their dad when they were 18. Never really got that, seems so old-fashioned now. They looked like they should be in Status Quo.

Q: Ballet flats. In or out right now? Or half way between the two?!

They are always available in the shops in loads of colours. They feel old fashioned to me though as black leather ones are what i went to school in! (about a hundred years ago).

Dozer · 30/09/2021 17:16

I have damaged feet and back from too many years of walking lots in crappy footwear - both heels and ‘ballerina’ flats.

If such shoes were truly so great, men would wear them!

MissCruellaDeVil · 30/09/2021 17:17

I still love a pair of heels, but always chuck a pair of flats in my bag or boot as it's no good for long events!

MidnightMeltdown · 30/09/2021 17:18

I've never worn heels during daytime. I do too much walking for that and I don't see the point. I used to sometimes wear them for big nights out when in my 20s, but I don't go on those kinds of nights anymore. I think, like low cut tops, it gives the impression that you're desperate to attract men.

Ezydoesit · 30/09/2021 17:22

I really wish more female news anchors wore flats. Also it seems that if you have a ‘powerful job’, the protocol is to wear heels still. Such a shame more women don’t break this mould.

Yeah this actually.

Funnily enough as soon as i read the thread title i thought of Naga Munchetty and in my head said ''yes they are, most mornings actually''.

Her choice obvs. but yes the majority of presenters seem to still wear almost weddingy outfits to deliver the news.

lockdownalli · 30/09/2021 18:04

I am in my 50s and wouldn't be seen dead in heels now - really dated.

helpfulperson · 30/09/2021 18:27

Covid has really changed fashion. Most women I know rarely wear bras these days never mind heels. And virtually no men wear ties anymore which our office all did prelockdown.

QueenofKattegat · 30/09/2021 18:32

@Sooverthemill

"Ladies"? Wtf
I was hoping to see someone say this! I really hate the term ladies. It's so poncey and twee. Woman isn't a rude word! Ooh laydeez 🤢

I love heels, just to contribute 🤣

Let's not turn some women's desire and feelings of liberation at the fashion for flats into the shaming of women who choose to wear heels. News readers are not there to be your role model...
Blossomtoes · 30/09/2021 18:49

@felulageller

Let's leave heels as a 20th century relic and only gasp at them in museums from now on.
This. Comfort is a very, very hard thing to give up. Almost everyone seems to be wearing flats or trainers now, we’ve got used to being comfortable and being able to walk miles if we need/want to. It’ll take a lot to tempt us back again.
Ezydoesit · 30/09/2021 19:09

@Yogsgirl I have absolutely no problem with women wearing the footwear of their choosing. My point is that it seems like female anchors feel duty-bound to wear heels. I say this as I really struggle to find one who doesn’t. Maybe I’m wrong about that.

user1471554720 · 30/09/2021 19:24

I hope that a block heel of one or two inches is acceptable. My heels hurt if I wear flats. Also high heels are uncomfortable. I wear ankle boots with an inch heel for winter and sandals with an inch heel for summer. Even my 'walking' shoes have about one centimetre heel.

PixieLaLa · 30/09/2021 19:26

Erm it’s not shaming of women wearing heals it’s about breaking this sexist old fashioned opinion that heals = professional job Hmm

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 19:32

Well, you seem to be saying that any woman wearing heels is 'letting the side down' because they are perpetuating sexist ideals. @user1471554720 even feels she has to ask if her choice of a two inch heel is acceptable, when of course it is is! It's her choice!

DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 19:34

You don't have to wear crippling heels to have a glamorous look!

I've always loved gold/silver/metallic shoes on a night out, you can get some gorgeous flats with shimmer, beading, glitter, metallic stitching etc, plus they are comfy and good for your feet. Everyone's a winner!

DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 19:36

Also it seems that if you have a ‘powerful job’, the protocol is to wear heels still.

Its changing. I work with loads of women in well paid and powerful positions who dress comfortably with flat shoes.

Ezydoesit · 30/09/2021 19:36

No, I just don’t feel comfortable with women feeling like they should wear a particular type of shoe in order to have the right image for their job.

Spindrifting · 30/09/2021 19:37

Not every choice made by a woman is feminist.
Mantlemoose · 30/09/2021 19:38

Flats for walking and shopping, heels for everything else, especially going out!

The female presenters on Newsnight have some ace outfits that go against what you would "expect" a female anchor to wear.

It’s definitely changing. And not before time.
Unsure33 · 30/09/2021 20:10

So are loafers going to be the winter office shoe ?

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 30/09/2021 20:18

If you're concerned about glamour, I can't think of anything less glamorous or sexy than the "thick black tights" you're looking forward to wearing, tbh.
