To think ladies are not wearing heels anymore

I was watching a fashion item on tv the other day,and the presenter said " isn't it wonderful that we are all wearing flats now ".

I have worn my trainers a lot over the last 18months, but I've still worn my wedge heeled sandals too.
I'm really looking forward to wearing a dress, thick black tights and boots with a heel.

Has everyone converted to trainers now?
I know they are very comfortable, but is glamour fading fast?
AIBU to want to keep my heels? I will keep wearing them anyway, as I'm not one to worry about it.

I am in London and saw a woman on the tube wearing nothing but socks, holding her heels in her hands (night out). All power to her but it struck me how ridiculous heels are- that they are so painful that even going out in nothing but socks is preferable to walking in them.

I wear heels for interviews and weddings. Mainly cos I can't really find any dressy black shoes i like and i have these heels.

NotSoNewAndShiny · 30/09/2021 16:16

I actually like looking at heels - a lot of them are beautiful and I haven't admired any other type the way I admire high heels. Just not for me anymore, practically.

They do make some people look funny sometimes, when you can tell they're obviously trying to maintain their balance while standing in them. Just take them off and breathe easy.

(Easy for me to say now though, I know.)

@AliceMcK

I love a nice pair of heels. At one point I don’t think I even owned a pair of flat shoes, I never wore trainers except for the gym. These days I live out of trainers only because it’s easier as a sahm running round after the DCs and because I’m fat and my ankles struggle to support my weight when I’m wearing heels.

I personally think heels are far sexier and as you say OP glamorous than flats. I know I will be abused for saying this 😆

No one’s going to ‘abuse’ you, but in your shoes (see what I did there?), I’d be asking myself while female ‘glamour’ involves wearing impractical shoes in which you can’t move fast, which throw all your weight on the ball of your foot, and lead to bunions, hammer toes, shortened Achilles’ tendon etc.
SquareYellow · 30/09/2021 16:18

I’m finally glad fashion has caught up, women are expected to suffer foot deformities and not be able to run at work etc whilst men wear comfortable shoes.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 30/09/2021 16:19

I wouldn't say I'll never wear heels again. But I don't think I'd ever choose them when flats would be more convenient - so, I might break out my heels if I was going to dinner and the only walking involved was tottering between the taxi and the table, but I don't think I would wear them to a wedding or work anymore.

I don't dislike them at all - I have several very pretty pairs that I love very much. I just prioritise comfort these days. But that's my my advancing age/reducing 'giving a shit what anyone else thinks' rather than any sort of COVID/lockdown impact.

CounsellorTroi · 30/09/2021 16:19

They are nice to look at just as shoes, just not when there’s a boot in them being forced into an unnatural position.

lescompagnonsdeloue · 30/09/2021 16:19

I don't wear heels but I am also not short. I think they have passed their moment to be fair. Maybe I'd wear them for a wedding or something. But not a night out.

You think you'll be abused for having a view? Why?
RantyAunty · 30/09/2021 16:21

The last time I wore heels was when those ridiculously tall stripper shoes were in.

Trainers and suits were popular in the 80s.

knackeredcat · 30/09/2021 16:22

I had some patent spike heeled boots and super high patent heels in my goth days - how the hell I danced in them I don't know - but CBA at my age and size. Much prefer a flatform/chunky boot for some extra height if I want it.

Staffy1 · 30/09/2021 16:26

I much prefer heels but have had to wear flats for years now as one of my ankles went wonky after an awkward fall, so I can’t wear them, even wide heels, without that ankle twisting and causing painful falls. I can’t get used to seeing trainers with dresses, it looks silly - probably showing my age here, they are ok with flat sandals or shoes, but not trainers.

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 16:28

Heels are still fashionable- the shops are full of shoes with high flared heels for autumn.

It will come full circle- heels have often been out of fashion for teens and young women- I remember in the late 80s and 90s when I was a teenager I wouldn't have been seen dead in a pair of stilettos- it was all Chunky soles and Doc martens and for evening it was big square heels. Then came the block heeled boots to wear with your bootcut jeans, and a few years later the high stiletto returned which everyone wore with skinny jeans.

It happens every time- as soon as the skinny jeans fall out of favour we return to chunky shoes to go with our flared and baggy jeans- which is the phase we are now!

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 16:30

I notice we agreeing a return of the ballet flats too.

Ypsilanti · 30/09/2021 16:39

I love my (many pairs of) heels; I suit smarter clothes and heels really make an outfit in a way flats (even smart ones) don’t. My clothes hang better and I feel more confident in work environments. I have no trouble walking in mine and I find them comfortable - I wouldn’t wear them otherwise.

All that said, if I’m walking any significant distance, I’ll whip off my heels and switch them for my trainers!

northernlola · 30/09/2021 16:41

I have never found heels particularly comfortable, I've got wide feet and most squish my toes. In my teens and 20s I regularly wore them on nights out. That was the 'done thing'. I'd have been refused entry to places wearing a lot of the footwear that's popular now! I often had agonising blisters/knees/hips or took them off to walk to the taxi rank. Sounds absolutely bonkers now! I cared more about what people thought, than I did about my comfort.

Now in my 30s I couldn't give two hoots what people think. Can't see myself hobbling about in high heels ever again!

Jobhunterhelp · 30/09/2021 16:41

I wore heels to a wedding on Saturday, first time wearing them in 18 months. My feet still feel numb. I'm done with heels at 40.

cheesegloriouscheeseyum · 30/09/2021 16:43

Back when ballet flats became a thing (20yrs ago?) I embraced the fashion. Then I realised that completely flat shoes can play havoc with your back and can be generally really uncomfortable. I wear trainers most of the time these days, but they tend to have some ins of arch support in them.

vickyc90 · 30/09/2021 16:45

I'm 5 foot 3 so defiantly still wearing heels, I stopped wearing stilettos years ago but still love a wedge, block heel or heeled boot. To me it just looks better trainers are my go to for jeans and a top days but other wise it's got to be proper shoes

I was having a conversation recently with a friend about clubs / bars not giving entry to people wearing trainers/ jeans. It just seems so weird now!
Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 16:49

I never understand how people claim flat shoes are bad for your posture/back/arches etc. Nobody was born to wear shoes with a heel- we are naturally adapted to have our feet flat on the ground, surely?

PixieLaLa · 30/09/2021 16:50

Good! The whole idea that ladies should be wearing heals is dated and sexist. Why should we suffer from foot and back problems from heels just to look more professional or ‘glamorous’. Wear what footwear you want.

PineappleRage · 30/09/2021 16:53

I wore heels a couple of times at 18 to try and fit in, before they were promptly binned! Uncomfortable, sore and I felt I couldn't walk right. I pretty much live in trainers or flat boots now.

pointythings · 30/09/2021 16:59

I've never worn thin spiky heels, but I do like a wedge or a chunky heeled boot. But when I need to walk anywhere, I'll wear my comfy flat ankle boots or similar.

My DDs don't own a single pair of slim heels between them. Plenty of platform boots though.

Thecurliestwurly · 30/09/2021 17:00

I use to wear heels all of the time in the 90's and early 00's as you weren't considered dressed up without them. Now I can't think of anything worse. I can go a whole year without wearing one. I do think they are a thing of the past generally. It is mostly older people I see wearing them or the TOWIE types. Everyone else can't seem to be arsed with them it seems.

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/09/2021 17:03

I notice more women wearing trainers now. I don't wear trainers at work as have to wear smart attire but I wear flat shoes.

I find heels really uncomfortable and difficult to walk in - I have no grace at all Blush
