Unvacinated nanny

Hello - We took out baby out of nursery spend ages trying to find a nanny instead. We have found somebody recommended by a colleague however she is not vacincated for Covid for personal reasons. Our baby is 10 months old, we are both double vacinated however I am still uneasy about this. My husband thinks its fine but I'm keen to know what other Mums think.

I would t be happy about it but depends on how much I value her

@Stormyseasallround

A hard no from me. I’d have no desire to have loons like that in my home, much less near my children.
This!

Sad state of affairs when we start to discriminate against others because they make a choice about their lives and their bodies.

It’s their lives and body in the same way as someone smoking in close proximity to others is only making a choice for their body - except…

Milkbottlelegs · 30/09/2021 15:42

Some haven't got round to it.

Vaccines have been available for months. It’s not difficult to get an appointment or even go to a walk in centre.

Some have not got round to it because anxiety is stopping them.

@XenoBitch crippling anxiety is a good enough reason not be hired as a nanny as well

You should actually be looking at peoples socialising habits and amount of people they are rather than their vaccine status

Vaccines protect the person

Majority of people with covid have the vaccine

Is covid a killer for babies?

Parents go out to work and I assume socialise

Flixon · 30/09/2021 18:17

personally I would not employ someone unvaccinated to work in my home in such an intimate position. But I am quite pro vaccination.

Flixon · 30/09/2021 18:20

and 'not believing in vaccines' is a completed deal breaker. Not 'wanting' a vaccine because you believe that for you covid is unlikely to be life threatening is a position i understand. I don't agree with it but I understand it. 'Not believing in vaccines' is the mark of a fool. I would not employ a fool to take care of my child

ejhhhhh · 30/09/2021 20:39

I've read the update, and that would be an even harder no. What else don't they "believe" in? Any other aspects of science, or just vaccines? You don't get to choose to not believe in it, it's not a religion. So if you're going to have that kind of attitude in an influential position around my child (who knows, you could be their nanny until their school years) you can do one. And do one some more, far far away.

You can be anxious about the vaccine and that anxiety not impact other areas of your life.
Porcupineintherough · 30/09/2021 20:59

@XenoBitch yeah but why risk it? Most of the vaccine hesitancy you read about is either antivax lunacy or an outgrowth of a more generalised health anxiety.

ClareBlue · 30/09/2021 21:10

@willstarttomorrow

I have a colleague who cannot be vaccinated due to severe allergies. We are frontline (although not nhs) so we were vaccinated quite early on. My issue with people who can receive the vaccine, but choose not to, is their mindset being incredibly selfish. It is the same when parents refused the MMR, herd immunity is a thing and it keeps people like my colleague safe and when I worked in paediatric oncology some very vulnerable children.

I totally support that it is an individual's choice, however choices have consequences. Yes the vaccinated still can get covid but they are less likely to be hospitalised. Also the 'viral spread ' is meant to be much reduced. Also viruses mutate- so it is within everyone's interests to try and control covid as much as possible.

Finally, even if within a group who statistically will not get very unwell, the pandemic has been bigger than the individual. I have not seen my vulnerable mother for nearly 2 years because I cannot travel. Children's schooling and childhoods have been disrupted beyond repair for some and many businesses have been destroyed, etc.

So unless the nanny has a medical reason for not being vaccinated, no way would I personally would want to employ her.

This is exactly how I feel and most of our social group
DeepaBeesKit · 30/09/2021 21:11

I wouldnt.

Derbee · 30/09/2021 21:31

You can be anxious about the vaccine and that anxiety not impact other areas of your life

But when looking for a nanny for your child, you can discount people easily based on attributes that you don’t like. There’s no need to think “ah, I hope this crippling vaccine anxiety doesn’t run into other areas of thinking. Let’s give it a go and see if the nanny is just anxious about vaccines”.

I wouldn’t employ a nanny with anxiety, or with vaccine mistrust. Or who smoked. Or believed in physical punishment. Or swore at children. Etc etc. As the employer, you can write people off that you don’t find appealing

JojoLapin · 30/09/2021 21:39

Nope. Not a chance. With such poor judgment, I would not have her looking after my children.

Agreed.

Anxiety on its own would not make you 'not believe in vaccines' - apparently any vaccines.

hedgehogger1 · 01/10/2021 11:34

No she's likely to come into contact with cases and have to isolate leaving you without childcare. Probably on numerous occasions. Assuming you need reliability of course
