Unvacinated nanny

Hello - We took out baby out of nursery spend ages trying to find a nanny instead. We have found somebody recommended by a colleague however she is not vacincated for Covid for personal reasons. Our baby is 10 months old, we are both double vacinated however I am still uneasy about this. My husband thinks its fine but I'm keen to know what other Mums think.

Thanks so much everyone for commenting. It’s been really helpful . The nanny in question does not have a legitimate reason for being unvaccinated other than “ I don’t believe in vaccines “. For me this is a deal breaker .

@ilovesooty a year ago there was no vaccines and rates/deaths were very, very, very low.

Can you believe it would be ok to leave the house when you live with someone who has covid.

Think about it.

Patapouf · 29/09/2021 23:39

I do not trust the judgement of vaccine refusers and could not trust one with my child's care

Coyoacan · 29/09/2021 23:39

I'm astounded at how frequently people are coming into contact with covid in the UK. I live in huge city, have taken reasonable precautions but have been out and about every day since the start of the pandemic and have yet to come into contact with someone with covid

In England at present, 1 in 90 people have covid. In Wales and Northern Ireland it’s 1 in 60. And in Scotland it’s 1 in 45 (Source: ONS Infection Survey, 24 Sept). So a couple of bus journeys, a trip to a shopping centre or a evening in the pub is likely to bring you into the same space as someone who is infected.

Do you have some kind of covid radar that tells you if a person you meet or share space with is infected? If so, where can I get one?

Polestarsim · 29/09/2021 23:50

No I wouldn't. It will increase your very young baby's chance of catching covid. Choose someone else.

Verbena87 · 29/09/2021 23:52

If she doesn’t believe in vaccines is she vaccinated for any other contagious illnesses?

I think I would prefer someone vaccinated in your shoes.

This is the best sentence I’ve ever read

No it doesn’t
Mynameismargot · 29/09/2021 23:55

It would be a no from me. The person I would choose to look after my baby would have to be my kind of person and unvaccinated people just aren't. I haven't got time for their nonsense and drama.

OfNick · 29/09/2021 23:59

Oh please 🙄 Have you even asked her why she's not vaccinated? The majority of the UK population has now had the magical vaccine, surely that's enough to save everyone?

OnceUponAThread · 30/09/2021 00:00

@Lavender24

Oh here we go again. It's the cleaner thread all over again.
IMO very different scenario to a cleaner. If your cleaner is regularly off isolating the world will not stop turning. At absolute worst your house will be less clean.

If Nanny is regularly off isolating then it will have a knock impact on your job, your leave, potentially even your career trajectory. Childcare letdown is a whole different ballgame to cleaner letdown.

If she doesn't believe in vaccines then she doesn't believe in the best for your child. That would be a definite no from me!
OnceUponAThread · 30/09/2021 00:02

Also most people have a cleaner for a few hours a week. Even if paying when isolating it's not a disaster. Full time nanny, completely different, particularly if you have to pay childcare on top.

Djifunrsn · 30/09/2021 00:03

The problem is the possibility of repeated 10 day isolations - the double jabbed are exempt from this. So she’d have to isolate. Plus the chances of her picking up Covid, being ill and having time off, or infecting your baby would just be a load of unnecessary stress IMO.

Polestarsim · 30/09/2021 00:13

@Talktalkchat All the early data points to lessened transmission from vaccinated individuals.

The OP says her reason is that she doesn't believe in vaccines.

I'd want nothing to do with employing someone like that.

ellyeth · 30/09/2021 00:35

I think people have a personal choice. Personally, it would not worry me unduly provided she was good in every other respect, especially so far as hygiene is concerned. She has a choice not to be vaccinated and you have a choice - if it makes you feel anxious then look for someone else.

SeaisBlue · 30/09/2021 00:39

It has got to be a personal choice, without judgement either way. I would be fine with it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/09/2021 01:04

I'd love to take credit @ImNotDancing but I stole that line. Grin

“ I don’t believe in vaccines “ would be enough for me not to hire her. Along with not hiring anyone who believes in homeopathy or fairies or flat earth theory. I don't want my small person filled with nonsense.

Ironically I'm FB friends with DD's old nanny and she's a full-on conspiracy nut now. I wouldn't hire her now.

mrssunshinexxx · 30/09/2021 01:14

I wouldn't even think to ask someone if they were vaccinated. It's personal . If she is young ish (pre children) it could be that she doesn't want it because of the lins to fertility and it messing up period s

milkyaqua · 30/09/2021 01:36

I would be more worried about her attitude leading to the baby bring unnecessarily exposed to covid; surely a baby's wellbeing trumps her whims around 'personal choice'. I am glad you are not hiring her, OP.

SneakyCucumberAction · 30/09/2021 01:42

NO anti-vaxxer home help goes near my children. Period.

What nonsense. Covid has a more detrimental impact on fertility than any vaccine. Stop perpetuating lies.
Tillysfad · 30/09/2021 01:51

You don't want to find out she can't go to certain places with your baby of vaccine passports come in.

Also, I would be suspicious of her judgement if she is one of these anti vax people.

Children do occasionally become very unwell with Covid and having an unvaccinated nanny n makes your child slightly more likely to be around someone with a higher viral load. I think it might depend on the context.
