I think her comments today were spot on, although not really professional she makes a valid point.

The problem is, she’s a woman and women have a harder time.

They’re held to much higher standards than men.

The language towards Angela Rayner is ridiculous. I’ve heard her be called a harpie, screeching fish wife etc etc - well over the top.

Yet Boris Johnson gets away with fuck knows what.

Angela doesn’t play the “game” - it’s only until she does that, will she be seen as acceptable. The game, sadly, is ingrained through society (women to be seen as nice, polite, not too hysterical, don’t be too emotional blah blah blah).
@sst1234 Since when has the daughter of a successful shop owner (Thatcher) or a Church of England Vicar (May) been from " a working class" Confused

Both who went to Grammar school and Oxford btw..
What is it then? You’re really clutching at straws now, in your fruitless quest for class warfare.

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2021 22:02

@reprehensibleme

If someone carried on the way Angela Rayner did today in the workplaces I'm used to they'd be facing a disciplinary. She came across as an unhinged yob and doubtless the tories will be cashing in on the aftermath. She's done labour no good whatsoever. Gob on a stick.
She wasn’t in a workplace.
Macncheeseballs · 26/09/2021 22:02

Reprehensibleme, I'm sorry but you don't come across as much better

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2021 22:04

When Tories behave like this, you can kind of see her point.

SaddenedByItAll · 26/09/2021 22:05

She certainly would be an irregular choice for future PM

emuloc · 26/09/2021 22:05

@Jellykat

I too think shes right, and its refreshing to see a passionate mp who tells it like it is, instead of all the wishy washy bullshit that gets delivered these days.
This.
Rosehip10 · 26/09/2021 22:06

@sst1234 If you think Anglican Clergy are "working class" then I suggest you have a limited understanding of class in the UK. A vicar typifies "middle class"

OhWhyNot · 26/09/2021 22:08

Scum Ffs typical of loud mouth Union reps that do nothing but give it to the rich Hmm use this word

She is an embarrassment to the party. She is getting plenty of media attention which makes her more confident and mouthy

She is so stupid she doesn’t realise she is an absolute gift to the Tories and the Tory press

Keir Starmer needs to show leadership send her back to the benches and stop appeasing the left of the party they have had their time and look what it left us with

reprehensibleme · 26/09/2021 22:08

It is absolutely her workplace. She is a high level representative of a party who wants to be in government. I am a grass roots supporter of women in politics, hate the way women are held to different /higher standards than men who couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag, but Rayner's language, attitude, general demeanour does not fill me with confidence. I am, as a northern, working class woman, looking for reasons to vote Labour and tbh at the moment I'm not finding any.

ThatSunnyCorner · 26/09/2021 22:10

However often we are proved wrong, I think many people will vote for a party leader they perceive as more charismatic, better educated, smarter, more successful and richer than them. Maybe it's the class system which is so pervasive in the UK, I don't know.

Angela Rayner, by bringing up her back story and choice/delivery of language reinforces her 'ordinariness'. I don't think that's what people will vote for. She's another nail in Labour's coffin.

Macncheeseballs · 26/09/2021 22:11

I'd imagine she's attracted plenty of voters

ThatSunnyCorner · 26/09/2021 22:15

I disagree.
thecatsthecats · 26/09/2021 22:16

It's symptomatic of the entirely degraded political scene. Increasingly polarised politics - SPOILER ALERT - are significantly linked to shite outcomes historically.

It doesn't matter that Boris Johnson is, in my opinion also, scum. It matters that millions of people will be hearing her evaluation of Johnson - leader of the party they voted for - and thinking that she, by extension, thinks they are scum.

If you think that's good for the country, then you need your head checking.

Agree with the first two sentences, but on here alone, I’ve seen far worse language levelled at Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron than the examples you have used regarding Angela Raynor.

I think Jeremy Hunt was referred more often to Jeremy Cunt than his actual name.

I agree that women are held to a different standard, that the language used to describe them is not used for men and is misogynistic.

Also agree that Boris Johnson gets away with saying outrageous awful stuff because of his sex and his background and also because he has a certain charisma.

I think that if the Labour Party are serious about being elected to govern this country they can’t keep going down the “but Boris” road. They need to be better, more competent, better ideas, moral high ground - it really shouldn’t be difficult and yet the Labour Party seem to persist in failing to step up. Angela Raynor doesn’t do it for me by calling him scum - win the argument, don’t resort to name calling, it’s not needed and it’s not what most people want to hear.

reprehensibleme · 26/09/2021 22:18

Macncheese, well, I've not referred to anyone as scum and I've not abused people from a public rostrum. I'm also not in any kind of position of influence. Mind you, if Rayner carries on as she is, neither will she be.

She's not an honest, breath of fresh air, she's a bloody embarrassment.

OhWhyNot · 26/09/2021 22:19

Oh yes I’m sure many people will vote for labour now because of rent a gob getting so much media attention

The Tories are laughing and anyone who has the slightest level of understanding about British politics knows this. Corbyn was a gift now followed by Rayner

Snoopsnoggysnog · 26/09/2021 22:20

@SensiMuck

She seems unhinged. Scary woman, power hungry, I know the type, if I'd meet her in a professional or personal context, I'd run, run, run.

As a passionate remainer and supporter of social democratic values, I am gobsmacked to see what utterly weird leaders the Labour attracts, Keir Starmer aside but he just seems to meek.

But that Angela Raynor, I must say, my stomach churns when I imagine her running the country, absolutely scary thought.

Not read whole thread but I completely agree with this.
DecadentlyDecisive · 26/09/2021 22:22

She's common as muck & sums up the "Tolerant Left" nicely.

She'll go down nicely with the usual MN suspects who only ever associate with people once they've filled in their 15 page questionnaire on politics, inclusivity, Green Credentials and then passed a 2 hour interview.....

For the rest of the country however, she's just another irritating twat in a party full of them and a good reason never to vote Labour...

DecadentlyDecisive · 26/09/2021 22:23

Only halfwits would be attracted by Raynor!! GrinGrinGrin
Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 26/09/2021 22:25

Being a woman who doesn't think TWAW, this just makes me think- if you support abuse against someone you can't stand, you're not in a great position to complain when you turn into the person who is considered disgusting scum. I just think I don't want to live in a country where this kind of anger and vitriol towards people that you disagree with is acceptable.

Iggly · 26/09/2021 22:26

What’s wrong with being common?

I’m common as “muck” but sadly I’ve had to “assimilate” for fear of snobbery.

You’re right. Labour need to play the game, and work on appearances as well as policies. The Tories just focus on appearances but Labour have got a bigger hill to climb.

Theluggage15 · 26/09/2021 22:30

She’s an appalling gob on a stick and helping to ensure Labour remain unelectable, but they and their supporters seem happy with this, sad little student union party.
