I think her comments today were spot on, although not really professional she makes a valid point.

OP posts:
Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 09:05

BJ has more political awareness than her and is much better at riding out these sorts of storms

That’s laughable. He wasn’t very politically aware when he failed to sack Cummings or when Rashford embarrassed him into feeding the poorest kids or on any of the U turns his apology of a government has been forced to make. His awful remarks in the the press continue to haunt him years later, that’s not riding out a storm.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/09/2021 09:07

He is PM. He won a massive majority despite an interesting record as Mayor of London and more "cock ups" than you could count.

I think that is the very definition of riding out the storm.

Although still winning by a landslide even though they’ve been known for a while.

Labour are getting airtime which I suppose they might be happy about atm. But whether Rayner is the right deputy, we’ll see.

I’m fine with a shift from the left for Labour, Blair after all got a landslide too. But Labour feels very different to back then. Negative, insulting and punitive.

What was the storm he rode out? There wasn’t one. He’s in the middle of a hurricane now, let’s see him ride out the coming winter of discontent. I’m waiting with interest.
Undeuxdrei · 28/09/2021 09:12

@RufustheBadgeringReindeer people seem more incensed about uncouth name calling than the ineptitude of the government. Claims that floating voters will be put off voting for labour because of it, suggestions that AR is really insulting the electorate...are people really that easily offended and distracted by all this ? Reading this thread they obviously are. Tories were obviously going to make political capital out of this but that people fall for it despite the ongoing corruption, cronyism and general mismanagement of everything they touch is tragic.

merrymouse · 28/09/2021 09:12

The list of stupid things that Boris has said and done is very long and goes back many years. Yet Labour still had their worst election result in decades in 2019.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/09/2021 09:14

The comments that he is expect to apologise for were all made before he as elected. They were well known. The Tories nearly imploded over Brexit. The winter of discontent destroyed the Labour party and ushered in Thatcher - be careful what you wish for.

Clavinova · 28/09/2021 09:18

Another corker [gay men] for which he did not apologise. Obviously misunderstood.

Pink News
"In Parliament, Boris Johnson was an early pro-LGBT rebel. Despite his early beliefs, Johnson’s legislative record is markedly more liberal."

"Elected to Parliament for the first time in 2001, Johnson rebelled against his own party on several occasions to back LGBT+ rights measures."

"Defying the Conservative leadership at the time, Johnson voted in 2003 to abolish Section 28, which banned the “promotion” of homosexuality in schools, and voted in 2004 to permit civil partnerships for same-sex couples."

"Alongside George Osborne and John Bercow, Johnson was one of just a handful of Tory MPs who were willing to back the Labour government’s LGBT+ reforms."

www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/06/18/boris-johnson-lgbt-rights-record-anti-gay-slurs-liberal-stance/

I do think she should apologise immediately after boris apologises for his letterboxes and picaninnies comments...

Jan 2008
Boris Johnson has apologised for referring to black people as "piccaninnies" and talking about "watermelon smiles".

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

If you voted Tory then yes anyone can deduce you’re not too bright.

This attitude is what lost Labour the last elections, and the ones before that, and I see it's well and truly thriving to these days. Insult your potential voters, patronise them and call them stupid.

I'm tempted to call someone who never learns from their mistakes not too bright.

Haha so true. How does that quote go about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results being a sign of stupidity.
Undeuxdrei · 28/09/2021 09:23

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude that's ok then Confused but it does say something about his overall attitude to things.
@merrymouse let's treat Angela Rayner's comments with the same uncritical eye then. Just part of her overall persona like Johnsons. Fwiw Brexit was the downfall of Labour. Who knows how people will vote next time..MN is a bubble in any case and like much of social media no one knows who anyone is and what their intentions are.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/09/2021 09:27

@Undeuxdrei
As a number of us have pointed out none of these comments stopped BJ becoming Mayor of London - as diverse and liberal city as you might hope for (I live in London and DH is a Muslim immigrant). Nor have they stopped him becoming a PM with a landslide.

As a PP has pointed out he has already apologised. So what's stopping AR doing the same. She has scored a massive own goal and the Tories are loving it.

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 09:29

The list of stupid things that Boris has said and done is very long and goes back many years. Yet Labour still had their worst election result in decades in 2019

So why apply different standards to Angela Rayner? If Johnson didn’t put voters off with his racist and sexist comments, why would Rayner put them off with “scum”?

Labour had its 2019 election result for one reason - Brexit. Johnson is a one trick pony, he’s played the Brexit card, he’s got nothing for the next election.

We’ll see.

Labour got it very wrong last time and haven’t won for a long time.

They need to be more positive for a start and scum isn’t that. Maybe some love it though who knows.

If the Tories don’t spend a lot of money in the north very visibly and very quickly

They are.

What no cut and paste? Been to Hartlepool lately? I have. If any money’s being spent there it’s far from visible.
PersonaNonGarter · 28/09/2021 09:50

This thread is quite weird. Endlessly wanting to distract or mitigate Angela Rayner’s comments by talking about other people.

Women can (and should!) be able to analyse politicians’ behaviour without attempts to shut them down with victim hierarchy and whataboutery.

This thread is about Angela Rayner’s use of language. And actually we are free to say she looks like an unprofessional bad decision maker who is unlikely to win over floating voters. That’s fine. Leave women to discuss this.

Leibham · 28/09/2021 09:52

@PersonaNonGarter

I am sorry but you can’t try to shut other women down either. Of course we can discuss who she was talking about and why she said it. It is entirely relevant.

You’re not the authority on who can discuss what.

Barbadossunset · 28/09/2021 09:52

Do you think it is or is not acceptable for a senior politician to publicly call their political opponents ‘scum

Tinpotspectator · 28/09/2021 10:02

Oh knock it off Kier chums. You're far more interested in kicking your own for piddling misdemeanours than arguing against any Tory policy. And in this climate?? That tells you everything.

Hartlepool, Redcar and Bishop Auckland set for £80m 'transformation'.

Three North East towns are in line to get more than £80m to help boost their local economies, create jobs and help bounce back from the pandemic.

Redcar, Hartlepool and Bishop Auckland will benefit from the Town Deals fund, announced by the government on Tuesday, June 8.

Have the pollsters asked if it's ok to call gay people tanked topped bum boys, god knows who a piccaniny with a watermelon smile, the brits as the laziest slackers going (raab, patel and qwarteng for good measure) ? Goes both ways ...

WormYourHonour · 28/09/2021 10:06

Isn't YouGov one of those sites that pays bored people .05p to complete a survey?
So most just select first answer and move in so they can bash out lots of surveys quickly?

Besides, that "Result" was based on less than 4000 respondents, barely a small village, let alone the "Whole of the UK"
