I think her comments today were spot on, although not really professional she makes a valid point.

@TooBigForMyBoots

I would wonder about the reason why posters don't see James Gray's Gray's disgusting "joke" as worthy of comment, but I know why: hes a Tory man and they can say whatever they like.Angry
That is not true. What he said was inappropriate and he apologised for it immediately and took down the comment. He recognised that what he had said was wrong. Angela Rayner just doubled down on her comments and said she hadn't gone far enough.

To be honest as a woman in her sixties, who's lived through quite misogynistic times, I have earned the right to call out any politician whom I think is in the wrong. And that includes women as,well as men.

LobsterNapkin · 28/09/2021 02:27

I don't really think it's appropriate to call any entire party slurs of that kind. It's not the same to criticize specific policies, at all - to say, these measures are bad for the poor, is not the same as, these guys hate the poor and would like to see them all dead, to exaggerate a little, but not all that much really.

I don't really think a democracy can operate effectively with that kind of rhetoric being normal, and it is unprofessional. There is a good reason you can't say stuff like that in the House, and it pretty much alienates anyone who has voted for the people you have branded as bigots and scum, so it's a big political liability.

Ibelieveinghosts · 28/09/2021 04:22

I don’t see any misogyny here. Many people take exception to that kind of behaviour amongst people who are one day hoping to lead the country. That kind of behaviour is not acceptable on the domestic or world stage. It’s the sort of behaviour we saw from Trump, calling people names because you don’t agree. It is nothing to do with her gender. The Labour Party are repeatedly missing the mark at a time we need a viable opposition. Starmer is falling over himself to be woke (who else has a cervix???). Yes we’ve seen some amazing cock ups from the Tories but Labour are going to take some major work to be in a position to overcome the bad taste left by the anti semetic conspiracy theorists (in the words of momentum founder, Jon lansam) that were prolific under Corbyn. In other words they need to be on their best behaviour to turn round the opinion of the majority voters.

As for all these calls for “sisterhood” etc. I will support or criticise an individual for what they do, not because of their gender. An MP doesn’t deserve my support purely because she happens to be in the same diversity box as me be it gender, race, religion, bodily status, sexuality in fed up of this trope of herding groups of individuals under an arbitrary banner and telling them its them against the rest of the world. It’s that mentality which is causing even more division.

Tinpotspectator · 28/09/2021 04:41

The fuss is just an excuse to vilify her:

As Zoe Williams has written, quite clearly:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/27/angela-rayner-called-tory-ministers-scum-and-now-theyre-weaponising-it?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

Tinpotspectator · 28/09/2021 04:42

She doesn't fit in with the labour right swing.

merrymouse · 28/09/2021 05:13

she’s won her seat in three elections now, so she must be doing something right.

Her seat has been held by Labour since 1935.

As deputy leader of the party she needs to worry about all the other seats.

Yes of course the Tories will make hay out of her comments. That is politics.

lannistunut · 28/09/2021 05:26

She's right, the current Tory government are scum.

But she needs to elevate her tone, to avoid distracting people from the fact that the current Tory government are scum.

MarshaBradyo · 28/09/2021 06:10

ThatSunny I agree this ‘pearl clutching’ mn typical insult is to stop women having an opinion on a politician.

A diversion

SensiMuck · 28/09/2021 06:17

@Malteser71

Vicky pollard
Ha! So true.
ohfook · 28/09/2021 06:28

I think both - I can't get the cognitive dissonance of people who look down on 'these African countries' with corrupt governments who run a country into the group by handing state money over to their cronies, when that is exactly what we have. And I wish people would understand that in some other countries (Sweden for example) there is a real sense and expectation that your government works for you. Their role is to improve quality life for everyone in that country. I don't think even the most die hard Tory could think that sums up the conservative's ethos.

However I think she worded it poorly and made herself look unprofessional. I also think she's having a real push at the minute to brand herself as 'one of us' and I'm not sure it's working.

I do think she should apologise immediately after boris apologises for his letterboxes and picaninnies comments and for the billions of pounds worth of pointless contracts that were handed out over covid whilst vastly decreasing school budgets and for the whole fucked up process of applying for pip and for every company that is allowed to operate in the uk whilst avoiding paying corporation tax.

TheIrritableGoldfish · 28/09/2021 06:57

I also think she's having a real push at the minute to brand herself as 'one of us' and I'm not sure it's working.

I think she has an outdated view of what being 'one of us' actually is.

saleorbouy · 28/09/2021 07:00

You would hope that someone that high up in party politics could be more eloquent with her language especially if she is a future party Leader.
I find her remarks inflammatory and uncouth which she has used for headlines rather than addressing the issue.
If Labour actually got their act together and became an opposition party that would challenge the government that would be much more beneficial to the country and the electorate

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/09/2021 07:03

I think she’s going for Keir Starmer’s job.

She clearly parked her tanks on his front lawn with the Times interview. Calling people scum is how she thinks she’ll get i because she’s passionate and has fire in her.

Laquila · 28/09/2021 07:21

Interesting points, @BreadInCaptivity

x2boys · 28/09/2021 07:31

@TooBigForMyBoots

Why can’t we discuss what the thread is about rather than someone else?

This thread is misogynistic pile on. It's MC women (some of them feminists🤨) circling the wagons to protect a very privileged, powerful man from the angry words of a working class woman. It's the sexist media employing all the sexist tropes at their disposal to deflect attention and Mnetters falling for it.Angry

Ha ha your so funny, middle class women, im sat here in my little northern town, in my council house, i cant stand the women because shes an arse and an embarrassment, contrary to what, mumsnet believe, just because im working class does not mean im thick and have been brainwashed, i do actually follow politics and watch the news and quite capable of having an opinion, but you know carry on insulting the electorate because thats working so well for Labour isn't it?
Leibham · 28/09/2021 07:36

@Undeuxdrei

It’s unbelievable.

Bring up any Tory male or female who’s ACTIONS and words cause unlimited pain and suffering will just be met with ‘well make a threat about that then’ ‘whataboutery’ ‘but he apologised’.

It’s clear from this thread that AR is disliked because how dare she even be in politics.

Leibham · 28/09/2021 07:39

@x2boys No one is saying you have to like her personally. She stands for something and people need to decide what they stand for, not personalities or whether she speaks a certain way.

If you voted Tory then yes anyone can deduce you’re not too bright.

x2boys · 28/09/2021 07:43

And thats really going to get people voting for Labour isnt it calling people not very bright?????
I mean carry on insulting people, this strategy clearly isnt working and your flogging a dead horse but carry on.

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 07:47

@Tinpotspectator

That’s a really good piece. Trust Zoe to call it.
MarshaBradyo · 28/09/2021 07:50

Why so rude?

SueSaid · 28/09/2021 07:52

She just makes a tit of herself everytime she speaks.

Yes criticise the opposition but do so with intelligence and credibility not with pathetic insults.

Imagine her hysterics if one of them called her scum.

Undeuxdrei · 28/09/2021 07:55

Don’t like the woman’s politics particularly but the comments about how she is frightening potential labour voters away because of her crudeness are ludicrous. As if making a social embarrassment of yourself is somehow worse than cronyism, dishonesty, in some cases downright corruption says a lot about the state of the UK. The hypocrisy of some of the self declared feminists on here bleating on about Keir Starmer’s stance on self ID etc yet happy to criticise a woman about her dress sense, accent and even her unfortunate background is staggering. And the false pearl clutching from alleged working class northerners, get a grip maybe ?

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 07:56

Imagine her hysterics if one of them called her scum

She’d laugh and call them something worse. She’s a very tough cookie. .

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 28/09/2021 07:57

If you voted Tory then yes anyone can deduce you’re not too bright.

This attitude is what lost Labour the last elections, and the ones before that, and I see it's well and truly thriving to these days. Insult your potential voters, patronise them and call them stupid.

I'm tempted to call someone who never learns from their mistakes not too bright.

SueSaid · 28/09/2021 07:59

She isn't a tough cookie she's just a mouthy Vicky Pollard horror.

Who tf does she appeal to and why? She seems thick as shit imo. I mean if she's going to hurl abuse about surely we can do the same.
