I don’t really get stuff like this, people are acting like they have no choice but to drive, what do people without cars do, how do they possibly cope 🙄

@Patapouf

Confused lots of teachers also live within walking distance of school and have access to public transport.

I'm not sure another kind of panic mongering is helpful? I think the worst of the petrol queuing non-sense is probably over by now.

Not at the school I work at they don't! The nearest teacher lives 15 miles from school. I live 25 miles away and I know one teacher has an 80 mile round trip each day. We're in a very rural area and I couldn't get to work by public transport.

I'm guessing they make sure they live close to work/public transport.

lol at some of the comments! My husband said 'they'll have to prioritise petrol for teachers' and I said 'people hate teachers; they'll just say teachers have to get there and will complain about us being lazy...' I am SO right!!

The first bus from the town where I live to the town where I work is 10am and takes an hour. So I'd get there just in time for break! I'll definitely do it but it won't be super useful to my school!!! 🤣

How do teachers manage to turn every situation around to make out they are the worst affected?

I’m no worse affected than anyone else and I have never claimed to be. I’ve explained the situation I’m in because it’s relevant to the thread. Start one about a different profession if you want a discussion on that. The memes are a lighthearted joke based on home schooling, similarly there are plenty on working from home.

People who don't drive wouldn't choose to work in a (semi rural or rural) school would they? As there is no public transport. Sometimes city/inward bound but not the opposite direction and in time for the start of a working day. The two non-driving staff at my school have been breaking school policy on car sharing throughout the pandemic or they'd otherwise have to resign.

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2021 19:08

It's 8 miles for me but no buses go across the county. If I got a bus I'd have to go half an hour in the opposite direction, wait, and go half an hour back. It'd take minimum 90 minutes.

I suppose you could hitchhike but it is known to be rather unreliable

Hitchhike in all of those lorries we aren’t short of 🤣

If you live somewhere where you don't need to rely on a car, you're very privileged. Huge parts of the country have no access to public transport of any kind, and huge numbers of people live in areas where it's totally impossible to cycling or walking to work or school.

I can't do my job without a car and neither can DH. Luckily we both have enough fuel in our tanks to work - I can manage all week but DH will have to stay home if he can't get fuel by Wednesday.

He can't exactly stick all his plastering tools in a backpack and cycle the 35-40 mile trip to work, funnily enough.

Obviously there are some real idiots out there with buying extra fuel etc but most of the buyers are just you and me who need fuel and adding a £30 max also increases the amount of trips needed.

Things like this change your habits so the person who usually waits until the light comes on realises they can't leave it that long and those those who get panicky around half a tank
Are worrying when it's above that and those who actually need fuel couldn't get it yesterday so now there is 4x what would usually be there.

I think most people have a genuine reason for needing fuel. Many people at a push could use public transport I’m sure? Perhaps we all need to be less reliant on a vehicle for our sole use, it’s just so inefficient.

Obviously a light hearted thread

it isn't really a light hearted subject. Our school is one of many preparing to teach online again next week, as a worst case scenario. Hopefully it wont come to that, but we have still lost most of the weekend making preparations

Have you heard of these things called buses and taxis??!

Sorry but this is just ridiculous. You don't have a special right to not turn up at work just because you're a teacher. I'm a nurse and I had to get a (very expensive) taxi to work today because there's no petrol to be had locally. You are lucky enough to be employed - you have to show up to work.

We're not saying we're going to be the worst affected. We're saying if we can't get to work and children can't come to school alot of parents are going to feel pretty badly affected!!

I'm not worried about how I'll get to school tomorrow. Mainly because I'm ill with covid so won't be there til Thursday at the earliest anyway. I'll start worrying on Wednesday if there's still a petrol problem.

I can't walk to work - Google maps says 5 hours along unsafe roads
I can't cycle - I don't have a bike, and haven't ridden one in nearly 20 years anyway
I could potentially get 2 buses and a train, but that would take 2 hours rather than the 25 minutes in the car.

Very few teachers live within walking distance of their schools. It is considered bad practice to teach within your own community, and is certainly not advised. Some young teachers in my school rent quite nearby, but anyone who owns their own home is likely to be 20-30 miles from where they work.

Weve had a few online conference calls over the weekend. As it stands, in my department, 8/10 will get there tomorrow. If the others can't fill up their tanks, we will be down to 4/19 by Wednesday - of course we won't actually be down to 40% staffing in the school, because the school will close
