Last time this happened, 20 years ago, and half the population all tried to get on a bus at the same time......

Thanks fir the reminder! Seriously - it's just dawned on me how much the buses will be rammed this week, so I probably need to leave considerably earlier than usual tomorrow morning

There was absolutely no need for panic buying fuel, not at all. I just wish people would use their common sense, employ some logic before acting & everyone would have enough to go round.

So stupid.

@CuriousBogInTheNight

Have you heard of these things called buses and taxis??!

Sorry but this is just ridiculous. You don't have a special right to not turn up at work just because you're a teacher. I'm a nurse and I had to get a (very expensive) taxi to work today because there's no petrol to be had locally. You are lucky enough to be employed - you have to show up to work.

Don’t those magical things run on petrol and diesel too?

Perhaps you live in a posh area where they’re all electric..
Report
DanglingMod · 26/09/2021 19:35

Ours too but non drivers have no choice but to lift share.

Those mentioning taxis forgot two things: they can't get fuel either and also you literally cannot get a taxi at school times anyway. They're all in use for school transport contracts. I tried on two occasions when my car was broken/wouldn't start and the companies just laugh down the phone at you. It's their main income. So, shift workers/night or weekend hospital staff, yes. School times, no bloody way.

@icedcoffees I work in emergency planning in a hospital and we have plans to transport essential staff into work if there’s no fuel or their is snow.

We are surrounded by rural schools. Most teachers drive. Very little public transport. Schools have been told to combine classes if teachers off with COVID, so could be fun if more teachers are off due to not being able to drive in. Could be a maths question, how many pupils can you fit in one room, and follow up question, how many will get COVID!

Lots of anguish about teachers getting into work which I completely understand but to add another thought, what happens with special schools where all the children have to be transported by taxi?

That's the case where I work, none of the pupils live in walking distance and only a couple of staff are nearby, all the rest of us have at least a 20 min drive. Public transport's not an option round here and the nearest petrol stations are all empty.

My half a tank should last until Wednesday if I'm careful but I'm genuinely worried for the kids I teach.

Monkeytennis97 · 26/09/2021 19:41

Well there's two teachers here. We have half a tank and everywhere is closed around us. Fingers crossed!

Okay, so how do you transport all these people 40+ miles to work when they all live in areas with no public transport and there's no fuel?

Our local garage has no diesel. None. Once the taxis run out then...well, what are people supposed to do? We have no bus service and the train only goes in one direction.

I live in a place with great transport links, our problem is the buses should run every 10 minutes, but at the moment its pot luck when they turn up, shortages of drivers, now lack of fuel. Also depending on where they are, if they live in one town about 20 minutes from me driving, to get to my town would take either 3 changes on a train and about an hour or 1 change and a bus taking about the same time. This is assuming everything is running on time.

I can imagine that a lot of teachers live outside the area, unless their partner earns a massive amount because the houses prices are so stupid here, hopefully the school have sorted something because I know that when they would have left the school on Friday, the nearest few petrol stations were completely out of fuel

If you depend on fuel for work surely you shouldn’t let it get so low that 2 days (non work days at that) of reduced supply means you can’t get to work. Or should have filled up Thursday evening/ Friday morning before work. They didn’t start running out until Sunday here anyway. Half the population have filled up now so it will all right itself within days when they get a delivery!

Petrol stations were running out on Friday morning here-you are clearly very fortunate and most unusual that this only started to affect places near you today!

We get taxis and staff/members of the public with electric cars to help out. Snow - we do the same with 4x4 drivers. Also, staff walked in. Last snow day I walked into work and it took me an hour and 15 minutes each way. 3 pharmacists walked for 2 hours to get in.

Judging by the queues today when a local petrol station got a delivery, i'm guessing we're nowhere near normal, and won't be for at least another week at least.

Mine isn't

I didn't panic buy, and have enough fuel for normal activities until Tues/Wed. I think in normal times I would have filled up this weekend, but it's been impossible.

I can't be the only one in these sort of circs?

I just checked google maps, it would be a 2 hour 52 min walk for me through farmland which I'm not doing should I run out of fuel.

Taxis also rely on fuel of which there is none.
There are very, very few electric cars here and two public charge points in the whole town.
Walking is fine but to get to our local "big town" where most people work, it's a 30+ mile journey each way. It's not exactly walkable or even cyclable.

We have no bus service to speak of and the trains only run one line (going up or down the coast) so if you need to go inland, you need a car. There is no other way of getting there.

I mean, I'm glad you have an emergency system but in many areas those options just don't exist. Telling people to walk 35 miles to work each way is hardly a solution.

Nope-neither DH or I have much left. No petrol stations with anything left around he is. I reckon I’ve got enough to last a day or two at a push.

Well, you're clearly totally unorganised and uncommitted Wink

I have a job seven miles away tomorrow along a 60mph road with no pavement. I'm a dog walker. Clearly I should cycle and just let the dogs run alongside Grin

I wouldn’t be surprised if tanker drivers can’t get fuel to get to depots to deliver the petrol. Luckily not at work this week.

On other threads anyone who fills up with a less than empty tank is a selfish fucker who deserves to be hung, drawn and quartered in the town square. Lots of people wait till their tank is down to the last 2 days to fill up. It's not like it's normal for the country to run out of fuel.

Are there any school parents who have fuel and would rideshare? Huge incentive for them!
