Yesterday the queue was so bad at Sainsburys when we went shopping that they had people directing the traffic. Today went to the local petrol station 5 minutes away and no queue at all.

@IsThisIt2021

I’ll be shocked if ours closes due to the fuel crisis, all but 1 of the school staff live closer to the school than I do and we walk!

Is it a small school? All but one staff member living within walking distance is pretty unusual. We have a few staff who live in walking distance, but the majority are a 15 - 30 minute drive away.

I couldn't get to work (school) if I ran out of petrol. There are no buses out of town to the village I teach in until an hour after the start of the school day.

Petrol stations near me are closed so you can't even queue.

I've got enough for Monday and Tuesday. I hope it's sorted by then or Wednesday is looking dicey.

Anecdotally, half or more of the petrol stations in the city are out of diesel...

@Whinge it’s a village school. 2 classes per year with 30-33 in each class so I guess it’s quite small? Saying that, my eldest attends a school further away and he gets transport so he may not end up in school even if the staff can get there!

@Patapouf

Confused lots of teachers also live within walking distance of school and have access to public transport.

I'm not sure another kind of panic mongering is helpful? I think the worst of the petrol queuing non-sense is probably over by now.

Around 4 of the 80 or so staff at our school could walk, and there are no about three buses a day, none at convenient times for teachers. I suppose those on the coach routes could use them, except the majority are full.

No teachers live within walking distance of my school! I wouldn’t say that was uncommon either. Some of the TAs do, but only a handful. The head and deputy live over 45 minutes drive away.

I agree. All those cunts getting fuel are stopping other cunts like me from getting fuel. It's not on because they all need it less than I do.

Teachers need it more though. How on earth do you expect them to get around the classroom with no diesel? Madness!

I tell you what though, the good thing about these selfish stupid cunts with their selfish stupid cars for their non essential frivolous journeys to and from work is that I've now completely forgotten that we're short of tanker drivers thanks to our government being quite possibly the worst in living memory and ballsing up every fucking damn thing it goes near whether petrol, food or gas. So I can quite happily spend my time talking about how stupid and selfish everyone else is, apart from me, and cast my next Tory vote with a clear mind.

Quite.

Very unusual for teachers to live within walking distance (possibly other than London?) We'd rather live well outside school catchment area so we don't bump into pupils. Our canteen staff mostly live locally thoigh, so the kids could get fed!

Even for a smaller village school 99% of staff living within walking distance is very unusual. I couldn't imagine bumping into pupils all the time. Grin I do hope your other son is able to attend though, and you have no transport issues.

I’ve never worked anywhere that would accept me saying I had no fuel as a reason to not come to work

What do you expect people to do? In my area, buses are running a very much reduced service because of staff shortages. A journey of 20 minutes down a motorway is not manageable on foot. A taxi in an emergency is fine but not day after day. I got fuel by queuing this morning on the say so of the garage owner on Facebook who said the tanker was due. No garages I went to at 6pm last night had anything left. Sharing is a possibility for some but not everyone. If enough staff can’t get to work, schools will close.

6 out of 9 of our school buses do not have enough fuel to run tomorrow. I have 25 miles left and school is 27 away. Going to risk it but no idea how I'll get home.
Might have to sleep at school.
Idiots filling Gerry cans - if you want us to teach your kids we need some. But ambulances & fire engines need it more.

The school my son teaches at is a 45 minute drive away and he has enough petrol to last until Tuesday. He drove around looking for somewhere with petrol last night and had no luck. He’s tried again today with the same result, he doesn’t want to drive much more because it’s obviously reducing the amount of petrol he already has. My husband’s just gone a drive around the local petrol stations now because he desperately needs diesel so if he finds somewhere with petrol he’s going to let our son know.

We’ve looked at public transport but he’d need to take three buses and a train which would take over three hours and because of the time of the first bus he wouldn’t get into the school until mid-morning. The location of the school means that public transport would be difficult for a number of the school staff.

Any idea what the plan is for school buses? We're not reliant on buses, but I know a local secondary is worried about running out of fuel.

Theres absolutely no queues or problems where I am

You're very lucky. I have just worked all day as a community nurse and I have been to 5 stations all sold out. None saved for emergency workers. I have an 80 mile round commute and cannot get into work now tomorrow.

How do teachers manage to turn every situation around to make out they are the worst affected? Confused I know at least a dozen people who need fuel for their equally important jobs but no amusing memes to guilt people in to not purchasing fuel to get themselves to where they need to be.

In the interests of being transparent, I have half a tank and haven't refueled, but Dh has because his light came on and he's a police officer. He didn't whinge at everyone else in the queue.

Where we live is so remote we fill up and fill Jerry cans to be able to get around without coming back to a town every couple of days.
We literally can’t get any diesel and we’re out. We have enough to get to the closest town but they’ve been empty for days!

When did it last come up? It doesn’t really matter if they accept it or not. If you can’t get to work, you can’t get to work. I suppose you could hitchhike but it is known to be rather unreliable.
