@Beebopawhop

Haha I know right. Idiots. I genuinely need diesel for work and school. But the thing is surely you waste more petrol/diesel queuing and secondly you can't overfill your tank right surely there can't be infinite cars in the area getting ALL OF THE FUEL? The mind boggles

No you can’t overfill your tank but people have been filling several containers with fuel as well - some of them completely unsuitable for fuel. All that fuel in the back of a car in containers made for carrying water is an explosion waiting to happen.

If you live and teach in a city or in a place with good public transport you can manage to walk to school. I hate to say this, but most teachers and TAs are not in this position. I've taught in 5 schools so know what I'm talking about. Teachers I've known have struggled into work with cystitis, with chest infections and had other very valid reasons for staying at home, but we know that if we don't turn up for work, classes have to double up, get spread about or expensive supply teachers brought in. I actually walked a child home through snow (miles) when the school had to close and mum refused to fetch her and wasn't even thanked. Teachers will get to school if at all possible, but they can't sprout wings and fly there. So if you're panic buying petrol, stop it!

I do think that at this point most people need fuel 4 one reason on anther. Like yesterday it pissed rain when I was doing the school run. I am lucky I do live only a 5 min walk from the school but if it's a 20 min walk in the rain with ur kids that's no fun kids would be soaked by the time they got there x

I was 'told' today by a member of SLT that I could cycle in just over an hour, as he is going to do! Which to be fair he is...but he is an official 'proper fit' cyclist, with a flashy road bike and all the kit...whilst I'm nearly 60, overweight, frozen shoulder and severe arthritis! He was deadly serious though...and informed everyone that having no fuel would not be an accepted reason for not being in school when he would be 'getting on his bike'

Can I suggest you pack a bag and sleep in school? You really aren’t that dedicated are you? Perhaps you could look after a few children who live further away whilst you’re at it?

Those timer things on maps are bonkers anyway. It reckons I could walk to school in 8hours and 50 mins but that has me walking up the motorway ( to be fair it is the most direct road but….)

I could cycle my journey in about 2 hours, IF I had a bike, and IF I had ridden a bike at all in the past 20 years. I don't think I'll be cycling to work

Yep that sounds like SLT. Otherwise known as sanctimonious little twats. 🤣🤣

Hard to walk when you’re carrying sixty books…

Even harder when you live 30 miles away 🤣🤷‍♀️

I’m a teacher that lives 40 minutes drive from my school. I tried 4 stations on the way home - nada.

And, of course, for those of us who didn't panic and waited... they have put the prices up...

We had 3 petrol station deliveries today.

All during school hours and all stations empty by the time we got out of school.

I am now trying to borrow a bike as the only place that sells them requires 7 days to build it.

Love how people forget that teachers might dare to have their own kids to get to school as well as get themselves to their own schools all at stupid o’clock in the morning- usually these are in opposite directions, because Sod’s law.

You don't recall saying that people should have filled up on Thursday night, Bungle, before anyone knew that there was going to be a problem? Or that they should have got up at 5am on the weekend to refill? Or that the problem would be resolved because petrol stations would be restocked and re-opened today therefore nothing to worry about?

Now suggesting that I'm lying about being low on petrol?

Our village petrol station just announced it will be out until Friday. Some people are going nowhere. Hope that doesn't include too many NHS and other keyworker staff.

@Jellykat

Just thinking at what point do school buses run out of fuel? So maybe not just the teachers who cant get in if we carry on like this..

I drive a school bus. I have enough diesel till about Wednesday. Local garages are completely out of diesel or have a £30 limit, which tbh, is not even worth bothering with when the coach has a 400l fuel tank

Piggywaspushed · 27/09/2021 18:06

Why do you doubt that? No one has said they are out of fuel but plenty of us will be if the situation doesn't resolve itself in the next day or so. We are the people who biddably did not panic buy.

My village Facebook is full of people with their petrol lights on in a bit of a flap.

Haha I’d suggest not listening to randoms on the internet about whether you need to refill.

Fab, Bungle, we’ve established that despite your confident assertions about what people should or shouldn’t be doing, and should or should not have done over the weekend, people shouldn’t listen to you because you don’t actually know what you are talking about and people’s local and individual situations might differ.

That actually applies to a lot of people on this thread.

Could you direct me to that post? Where I told you what to do, rather than offered an opinion on a chat forum? No you’d rather just be rude and use hyperbole. Which is fine because it’s only between you and your boss and I doubt you are actually out of fuel anyway.

I need my car to get to school. None of my colleagues live in the local area of the school so we all drive into school, except the HT who cycles.

One came in late actually but the other couldn't get in at all. They live 45 miles away and there's no public transport at either end so not sure what they were supposed to do?
