To think that grown men on trains shouldn't behave like this?

I travelled from Euston to Manchester this evening. Within 2 minutes of getting on the train most of the seats around me were taken by football fans who'd travelled down to watch Man City v Chelsea, who pretty much straight away cracked open can after can of lager and shouted/responded football chants down the carriage...except that these weren't young fans, but rather men in their 50s and 60s who quite frankly were a fucking embarrassment, and I as a single female traveller mid-carriage felt mightily uncomfortable.

AIBU to think that men of this age should get a grip and not behave on public transport this way, and make me (and the other women who I spoke to after at Piccadilly) feel uncomfortable and glad to arrive?

They sound sad and pathetic

Susannahmoody · 26/09/2021 00:29

Totally agree. Reason I'm glad we live abroad.

XenoBitch · 26/09/2021 00:30

YABU for thinking it is ok if they are young to be doing football chants, but not people in their 50/60s. People that age can still have a passion for things too.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 26/09/2021 00:30

I hate everything associated with football culture

RLOU30 · 26/09/2021 00:33

I think OP just means they should be old enough to feel better. I used to be an avid football fan and travelled on trains up and down the country “following my team” with a large group of men I see plenty of what OP is referring to and it can make everyone else on the train feel intimidated and uncomfortable for sure.

RLOU30 · 26/09/2021 00:33

Old enough to *know better

FelicityBeedle · 26/09/2021 00:34

Tbh I see more of that sort of thing from women on hen dos, loud drunken singing, pissed on the train etc. I just move carriage

How is it different to women on a hen night singing on the train too? I have seen that more times than football fans.
myadhdusername · 26/09/2021 00:37

The real question is were the following Proper Train Etiquette and sifting next to each other rather than across from each other at tables. That’s my main concern.

douliket · 26/09/2021 00:38

They sound disgusting and obviously self absorbed to think people would be happy to expose themselves to they loud drunk chants, and I presume the belching and farting that went with it, eeewwww

Anniissa · 26/09/2021 00:40

They’re worse on the way home afterward - my sister was travelling home with her young children late afternoon/early evening and there was aggressive shouting and posturing and the added joy of one guy vomiting at her child’s feet. It’s utterly inappropriate to behave like that on a public train.

swimlyn · 26/09/2021 00:46

Weak men bond over football, racism and misogyny.

Drink is a catalyst.

Such is life.

Quaggars · 26/09/2021 00:49

Doesn't matter who it is pissed up on a train singing away, it's not appropriate cracking open cans and singing away loudly, banging on tables (as was our experience on returning home from a day out recently) and it does make you feel uncomfortable with young kids when sat in a carriage with them.
As a pp pointed out though, hen nights can be just as rowdy.
It's not comfortable being on a train with any large group of pissed up people.
Not sure what age has to do with anything, should people know better after hitting a certain age?

Iamnotminterested · 26/09/2021 11:17

Regarding the age issue, I too am in my 50s and would never behave like that on public transport, though I wouldn't have done at any age as it shows a complete lack of regard for anyyone else. I think people of that age bracket just look sad exhibiting that kind of behaviour.

OP posts:
Etonmessisyum · 26/09/2021 11:22

Any age look sad displaying that behaviour
It’s not appropriate at all. I don’t use public transport but am glad I don’t reading this and I would avoid it if I knew football was on, cannot be doing with football louts behaving like no one else exists. Totally get people want to see their team play but not to behave like antisocial louts making other people feel uncomfortable. Drinking on trains shouldn’t be allowed for that reason, ruins it for people who don’t behave like arseholes tho

Carboncheque · 26/09/2021 11:27

Their age wouldn’t bother me. Being in a carriage with a large group of men, who are already well lubricated, getting progressively louder and drunker can be very intimidating. If your seat is booked you’re not supposed to move carriage. In this case, they’d won, so they were less likely to be arsey.

Finfintytint · 26/09/2021 11:29

My train journeys have improved vastly since Scotland banned alcohol on them.

RogueV · 26/09/2021 11:32

Meh
Were you hurt or abused?

It’s just a bit of footie banter. Did you feel the same when England were playing in the Euros?

I’d have joined in to be honest. But then again I am a footie fan.

FindingMeno · 26/09/2021 11:32

Doesn't worry me so long as I'm not travelling with children which is a different matter.
So long as they leave me alone they can crack on.

Macncheeseballs · 26/09/2021 11:36

Fin, Well that's a shame, a nice glass of white wine no longer allowed cos groups of wanky pissed up male tossers ruin it for everyone else

Macncheeseballs · 26/09/2021 11:37

Rogue, ah it's all under the guise of harmless bants, deal with it little ladies

Parky04 · 26/09/2021 11:38

@Susannahmoody

Totally agree. Reason I'm glad we live abroad.
I have watched football abroad many times and the fans are no different. The fans of Cologne wrecked a train!
VestaTilley · 26/09/2021 11:39

YANBU. It’s intimidating and horrible.

My proudest moment ever as an adult is tackling 8 drunk Arsenal fans going home on the train to Bournemouth after a match. They’d been playing Spurs and were singing really antisemitic songs. I shot down the carriage, alone, and bollocked them. They shut up, and the ringleader was actually really sorry and came and sat by me for ages apologizing!

I think because I shouted at them that they were being antisemitic that shamed them, but if I’d just shouted at them for being loud and antisocial they’d have probably just laughed in my face (or worse).

I hate it though, it’s a louty male dominance display and the police ought to crack down on it.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 26/09/2021 11:42

It depends if they were actually rowdy and/or threatening.
If they were just in lively spirits it wouldn't bother me.

Onelifeonly · 26/09/2021 11:45

I'm not sure I'd blame them for having a bit of fun but I would move carriages. (I'm your age).
