What to do about dog poo woman?

There is a tiny elderly woman who walks her dogs past my house every morning. She’s quite well known due to the fact that she’s about 4ft and walks two giant Irish wolfhounds that are 3 times the size of her. Problem is she doesn’t pick up their shit. The dogs often poo right outside my house. I went out to speak to her last week and asked her nicely if she would mind picking up the dog poo and she smiled sweetly and said “I’m 86 dear, if I bent down there I’d never get back up again!” and walked off.
Anyway there was a post on the neighbourhood Facebook page about people leaving dog poo so I replied saying about this lady and was told I was out of order as she’s so elderly!?

WIBU to mention it or even approach her??

OP posts:

She might not be aware of long-handled poop scoops, I wasn't but glad I know now for when we get my son's dog so tell her about them. But I agree even if's a struggle to do I'd still at least go on my knees to pick it up. It's only right if you have a dog you pick up after it.

wildchild554 · 26/09/2021 17:51

@nyorks1503 she probably does what I do when I can't bend, either get onto her knees, or I also have a low stool making it easier to do jobs like that. You find ways about the house, it's working out better methods out and about that's more tricky sometimes.

Harls1969 · 26/09/2021 17:53

@GoodnightGrandma

Report her to the council. If she can own dogs she needs to pick up their shit. I’ve got a lady with a guide dog near me, even she picks up it’s pop.
I'm honestly intrigued how she knows where it is to pick it up
PopcornAndWine · 26/09/2021 17:54

Whether or not this thread is real, my mind is blown at the number of people suggesting in all seriousness that people should clean up someone else's dog's shit. It's irrelevant that the owner is elderly - picking up after your dog is part of responsible ownership and if you can't do it, then tough, you shouldn't have a dog. There are other pets she could get if she wants companionship.

Mermaid67 · 26/09/2021 17:54

@whateveryousay

Or just buy some poo bags, and be kind, and go and help her out on the occasion they poo outside your house? I imagine that the dogs are very important to her, and reporting an 86 year old woman to the dog warden, with the stress this could cause her, sounds awful!! No, it’s not your job, but would take seconds out of your day??
As a non dog owner, I can’t imagine anything more gross and think if OP feels the same, there is no way she should have to do this, it would be one of my many reasons for not having a dog🤢

It's the low stools that are the problem...Grin

Whyyyyyyyohhhhhwhyyyyyy · 26/09/2021 17:55

Personally my opinion is if you have a dog and don't pick up after it (young/elderly doesn't matter) then the dog should be taken away and given to someone who's more responsible. It's just plain tramp behaviour to not bother picking up after the dog

Ddot · 26/09/2021 17:56

So she's strong enough and fit enough to walk huge dogs but not to bend down and clean up after them. Bollocks! How does she feed them.

lindyloo57 · 26/09/2021 17:57

You have to report her, I'm sorry but if if it was a teenager or anyone younger we wouldn't think twice.

PopcornAndWine · 26/09/2021 17:57

@Harls1969 one of my best friends is a guide dog user. From what I understand picking up after the dog is part of the training when a VI person is paired with a dog. Don't ask me exactly how they do it, but they do.

Ddot · 26/09/2021 17:57

She needs a dog Walker then

Ddot · 26/09/2021 17:58

Cant you get poop scoopers on a long handle

Kanaloa · 26/09/2021 17:59

@Harls1969

It’s actually really interesting. Some people with guide dogs will have a little bit of sight so will pick it up as we would.

Those who have very little or no sight often have their guide dog ‘trained’ so they know when/where it goes in its routine, or can give a command, or recognise its stance etc. I’m not sure what they would do if their dog went out of its normal routine, but I’m sure people would be understanding in that specific case.

notoldjustpastyoung · 26/09/2021 18:00

Difficult one this. Perhaps ask her if when they want to go would she pull them into the gutter. The one time I had a dog, before the poo rules as now, I trained him as a puppy to go in the gutter and he never failed.

Mistymoors · 26/09/2021 18:01

I would pick it up too, no it’s not my responsibility but sometimes it’s nice to be nice ! @burritofan deep breaths , I sense a lot of anger coming from you on this post Grin

It's something I've wondered about. I assumed that the dog would only go in a certain place so the owner would know where to find it or the dog would somehow indicate where it was.

Mollymoostoo · 26/09/2021 18:02

@NapoleonOzmolysis

Report her to the dog warden.
Exactly. It is against the law to not pick up after your dog and if she got caught she would be fined. If she can't look after the dogs she shouldn't have them.
wellstopdoingitthen · 26/09/2021 18:03

I do get tired of people not being held to account because 'they're old'.

duckiemonster · 26/09/2021 18:04

Not RTFT but is anyone else imagining Myrtle from Superstore as the old lady?

It's fascinating. Thank you, it's something that I've wondered about when I can't sleep

bondgirl76 · 26/09/2021 18:06

Thats ridiculous..dont care if shes 200..i have 2 dogs..never go anywhere without poop bags.Noone in their right minds would think this is ok.Sure its against the law too...

santabetterwashhishands · 26/09/2021 18:10

Report to the council ! If she's able to walk them she's able to pick up their sh@t.
I'd also be concerned about her ability to control the dogs if the need arises!

viques · 26/09/2021 18:11

If she is only four feet high she has less far to bend down than most people, so what’s her problem?

Grin
earthyfire · 26/09/2021 18:13

I was in agreement with you but then you mentioned telling tales on a facebook page. Hmm

skodadoda · 26/09/2021 18:15

@NapoleonOzmolysis

Report her to the dog warden.
Do this. She should not be exempt. Message the FB commenters to go and pick up the poo.
