Are fucking selfish, and will be the first to moan when they're takeaway can't be delivered, they can't get a taxi, or places are short staffed as people CAN'T GET TO WORK

god I'm pissed off

Will teachers be getting to school ok?

I don't want to use all my fuel getting to work....what if there's an emergency and I need to pick up a child/drive to doctors/vet/hospital?

MadisonAvenue · 25/09/2021 02:26

Will teachers be getting to school ok?

My son is a teacher, he has a 45 minute drive to school and using public transport (which we looked into tonight) would mean him taking four buses and travelling for over three hours and anyway, they don’t run early enough for him to get to work on time so if he can’t get petrol then he would be stuck.

3luckystars · 25/09/2021 03:51

A few things on my mind at this late hour:
Do most people fill up every week? Will this happen again when everyone runs out at the same time over the next week or two?

I’m amazed someone gets 5 weeks out of a tank of petrol, that’s awesome.

I’m also amazed that people had a stock of jerry cans to hold the hoarded petrol.

Things that may be next panic bought and hoarded :
Bicycles
Electric scooters
Jerry cans
Syphoning tubes

Furries · 25/09/2021 03:55

@lockdownmadnessdotcom

The word "selfish" is overused, but these people really are. At least half of them will have half a tank and no plans to go more than 5 miles at the weekend.

Some of us on the other hand have 5 hour journeys to do to deposit our offspring at university - and then 5 hours back! I complained in a local FB group and got told he should be making his own way with a rucksack and would I still be driving him to work. Idiot. Even 30 years ago everyone arrived at uni with their parents in cars!

IF YOU DO NOT NEED PETROL DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY ANY.

No need to shout!

And yes, the reason for your journey is important - but it’s important to realise that it’s important - FOR YOU!

Everyone will have “a reason” why. And, TBF, years ago (actually not that far back) kids would make their own way to uni, first job etc.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 25/09/2021 05:49

Well after a long walk in the fog I'm at work.
Passed a queue of over 10 cars at 5:20 queueing for the petrol station that opens at 6am...

I know! I wish I got 5 weeks out of a tank. I'd be fucking loaded instead of fretting every month about running out before pay day
speakout · 25/09/2021 06:12

I think it will be a busy day at the pumps.
I managed to fill up yesterday- I am one of the people who can last 5 weeks on a tank!

Simonjt · 25/09/2021 06:27

On my run this morning people were queuing at the petrol station that opens at 6:30, I was running by the petrol station at about 5:40!

jugglingduty · 25/09/2021 06:33

We live fairly rurally, and apparently all the petrol stations round here are closed or out of fuel.

I'm not panicking BUT it makes me realise how much I depend on driving to get everywhere. That's not sustainable anymore, is it?

Zeal · 25/09/2021 06:51

The current panic buying will blow over in a week. Longer term, driving and flying at will is not sustainable on climate grounds. We will be rationed.

Bizarre statement !
Just because something was done a few years ago doesn't make it better.

As for comparing going to university and starting a first job - don't know about you but when I started my first job I got on a bus and travelled down the road with my handbag and paced lunch.
Last week I took my last child to University in Surrey . The car was filled with clothes, kitchen equipment, etc.. Yes a car /van is an essential trip for University starters . ! Obviously some will not have access - doesn't make it ok . Just much harder work .

Dave20 · 25/09/2021 07:00

The panic buying for fuel will lead to more
people switching to electric cars more quickly.
The government wants petrol and diesel cars off the road. There’s an incentive now for people to switch.

skodadoda · 25/09/2021 07:04

@BluebellsGreenbells

Stormwhale

So your luxury trip is more important than people getting to work or food deliveries?

And so we embark on the road to the totalitarian state where some official decides whether you are worthy of access to goods and services.
OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 07:04

I have enough to get to work for two days

One of our night staff couldn’t get in

Not great for a forensic mh unit

Yesterday there was really long queues outside the petrol station. It needs to be kept for those that essentially need to get petrol

londonrach · 25/09/2021 07:07

I do need petrol but decided to not use car if I can get away with it (I do home visits for patients but luckily have Mon off) and fill up next week when this panic buying has stopped.

Berkeys · 25/09/2021 07:08

Time to go electric! Total non-issue for us. Haven’t been to a petrol station in years.

Sleepinghyena · 25/09/2021 07:12

@Berkeys
That's nice. Nice bit of stealth bragging there then.
Because oh yes, we all should have been as clever as you and bought an electric vehicle so we too could be smug...
Oh wait, many of us couldn't hope to be able to afford one...

deeni · 25/09/2021 07:19

Time to learn to teleport, I did years ago. Total non issue for me.

Berkeys · 25/09/2021 07:22

@sleepinghyena. Ours was second hand. Plenty of people on MN drive cars worth more than £3k, don’t be naive!

PeriChristmas · 25/09/2021 07:23

I bet loads of the panic buyers voted for Brexit too. Twats!

pinkstripeycat · 25/09/2021 07:23

It wouldn’t help me to panic buy as I’m a driving instructor and have to fill up every 3 days. I can’t store the fuel I’d need. I’m in massive debt due to the pandemic as I wasn’t entitled to Government help as I’d only been self employed for a year. My DH fought for this country (was in the army for 22 yrs) and is still a public servant in his current job. Our government are laughing at us all. 2nd home salaries when so many can’t afford one!

mogsrus · 25/09/2021 07:24

The irony of all this,is people are using the stuff to buy more of it,you couldn't make it up

pinkstripeycat · 25/09/2021 07:24

So much more to say but it’s nothing all posters don’t already know and why waste my time 🤷🏼‍♀️

LetterFox · 25/09/2021 07:28

Key workers again?

PeriChristmas · 25/09/2021 07:28

@wellards

They are buying fuel they would have been buying anyway. So not panic buying.

So what's causing the queues?

Petrol is not being delivered due to a lack of lorry drivers. Who come from Europe & have all left due to Brexshit!
