@HopingForOurRainbowBaby

Where about in the country are you that your DH only earns minimum wage as a HGV Driver? DH earns more than double that per hour on core hours and the supermarket he works for is certainly not known to be generous.

DdraigGoch · 24/09/2021 23:41

@LaMariposa

We are having a charging point fitted ready for an electric car next month. Wish we’d done it earlier.
Have you seen what has happened to the wholesale price of electricity lately?

I have a bicycle. As long as they don't ration the bacon sandwiches I fuel it with, I'll be fine. Quite entertaining watching everyone else panic though. Eight jerry cans? No mate, I'm sure that you're not panic buying, merely topping up a day or so early. Hmm

marchingtotheend2021 · 24/09/2021 23:43

@MazIsWin22

I think its a big scaremongering tactic. Its kinda like theres something else going on in the world that they are trying to distract us from? Anyone else have that feeling or am I just suspicious haha
Yes we say this all the time Shock
KatherineofGaunt · 24/09/2021 23:49

We filled up today because we're driving a long way tomorrow. I'm now a bit worried we won't be able to fill up again on the way back. I can go to work on the bus, though, although it'll triple my commute time. But I won't be able to get to my self-employed part-time job if I can't drive, so that'll be money I won't be earning.

I'd completely forgotten there was a fuel problem. It explains why I saw one man filling a can when we got fuel and then later I saw our local Sainsburys had put out cones to block off all their pumps.

Is that the name visible?

Nat6999 · 24/09/2021 23:55

Makes you wonder how long the buses & taxis will manage, I know the bus companies have their own pumps but it all comes out of thee same supply. If it carries on will we be going back to petrol rationing like there was in the 70's. My mum still has all the ones issued to my dad then.There will be so many questions like who has priority, like disabled drivers, business users, taxi drivers. Never mind Covid shutting down the economy, this could if goods can't be delivered & people can't get to work, before we know it we will be back to the three day week & power cuts. I feel for anyone who relies on oil for heating as well.

itssarcasmjoan · 24/09/2021 23:56

Very stressed tonight.
I am supervising a dofe hike tomorrow. I need to do over 100 miles this weekend and I only have 138 miles in the tank. All the local stations are closed and have had queues all day. I should be okay but if I am actual needs to go off route to a hospital or extra trip offsite I'm screwed. Cancelling would be really bad but it may come to that.

recklessruby · 25/09/2021 00:00

@jesusisAnyNameFree i have reported my post

Our neighbour got an electric car last week… excellent timing!

I filled up on way hole from school on Monday! Very lucky, it will last me 5 weeks.

I wish mine lasted 5 weeks how Shock
Mamamia7962 · 25/09/2021 00:09

Travelo - Do you have a link to that claim that traffic fumes cause autism?

RussianSpy101 · 25/09/2021 00:13

I filled up today. I don’t know how people can expect others not to be “selfish”
We all have our own needs. I’m not cancelling my commitments next week so a few other people can have some fuel.
Sorry but it’s every man for himself. If you miss out, hard luck.
We all need it.

Lancrelady80 · 25/09/2021 00:17

Yep, we're about to be royally screwed over going into winter. Quotes for heating oil through a syndicate have gone up over 20% in just one week. Plus the combi boiler won't work without electric, so we get those rises too.

Extra jumpers and blankets this winter.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 25/09/2021 00:21

@UserOfManyNames he earns way over the minimum wage, I think he meant more for the firms that don't

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/09/2021 00:27

FFS, why the hell are the petrol stations allowing people to buy cans of fuel right now? That is stupid, selfish and potentially dangerous (I know fuel can be stored safely but still). That is the fuel equivalent of the loo roll mountains - not someone filling their tank up.

whatisthisinhere · 25/09/2021 00:30

I filled up my car yesterday, but I have to drive over 200 miles tomorrow, I didn't even realise people were panic buying. No long queues, plenty of petrol at my local Tesco.

ColorMagicBarbie · 25/09/2021 00:32

@wellards

heard on the radio that trucks can't get petrol in order to deliver food. Why must people panic!
Trucks don't use petrol.
ColorMagicBarbie · 25/09/2021 00:36

I didn't have any issues today when filling up work truck though. Rolled straight in and blasted 200 litres into the tank.

CorianderAndCream · 25/09/2021 00:43

@Dave20

**But why did the media report it? If they didn’t report it, barely anyone would notice and people would buy as normal. Why did they have to publicise this, knowing what would happen. They caused this. No, the media did not cause this. They reported it.

And they bloody well knew this would happen. Report a shortage of something and people panic buy making the situation worse.

So you'd rather.... not know the news? You'd rather the media actively hid things from the public? Good Lord
MrsFezziwig · 25/09/2021 00:56

I’m confused. At lunchtime I put half a tank of petrol in my car for an entirely frivolous reason. I’ve been planning to do this all week, so presumably I can’t be classed as a “panic buyer”, but am I a “selfish fucker”?

For full disclosure, I am retired, but was for over 30 years a “front line worker” so maybe these two facts cancel each other out?

Cast your votes people!

MrsFezziwig · 25/09/2021 00:59

@Zeal

The best option is to only half fill the tank. We never, ever need a full tank. Let me explain.

Whenever I go from A to B, I have noticed they are never at the same height above sea level. Therefore, logically half the journey is going to going down and the other half is going to be going up. When I am going downhill, gravity will allow the car to roll forward and I do not need the engine running to achieve that. When I need to go uphill, I can engage the engine and use that power to drive the car uphill against gravity.

It is that simple. I use the empty top part of the tank to go downhill and the bottom half, which contains the fuel of course, to go uphill. Because I never need to completely fill my tank, my fuel bills are only 50% of what they would otherwise be.

Hilarious that some people on here actually think this post is serious!
movinghelprequired · 25/09/2021 01:09

It's the government's fault for not doing any of the scores of things they could have done to mitigate this problem. They KNEW there was a backlog in testing for HGV drivers due to covid. And could see years ago there was a shortage of new drivers coming into the sector. Brexit has made everything worse. So don't blame people trying to live their lives. Responsibility lies at the door of No.10.

JaceLancs · 25/09/2021 01:12

I’m on holiday in Shropshire - supposed to be going home tomorrow to Lancashire (no surprise see my MN name) I can’t get home as no diesel supplies locally - petrol pumps ok but nowhere nearby with any diesel supplies - any suggestions?
Fortunately I can stay in holiday let - but extra costs etc - work in fairly essential service (VCFS direct delivery)
I’m 10+ miles from nearest fuel supplier and daren’t risk setting off n wasting fuel if u get there and they’ve sold out

Zeal · 25/09/2021 01:19

There are many rural households that run petrol mowers, quad bikes and other equipment. Filling cans up isn’t a sign of a hoarder.
