Well we're all getting a taste what it is like to be fucked over by BJ just in case we were wondering. Chaotic narcissistic people leave chaos in their wake with the charm soon wearing the thinnest of thin. But hey Kermit, Miss Piggy - onwards to victory.

Dave20 · 24/09/2021 22:53

But why did the media report it? If they didn’t report it, barely anyone would notice and people would buy as normal.
Why did they have to publicise this, knowing what would happen.
They caused this.

No, the media did not cause this. They reported it.

@Cyw2018

Feeling smug about my electric car today, let's hope there aren't any national Grid problems this winter though (I'm currently thinking anything is possible Sad ).
You won't be smug for long when there isn't enough electricity and theirnare blackouts! Numpty

**As a non driver that walks to work I'm enjoying the shitshow. And before any one cries but what about the strain on ambulances, food delivery drivers etc I honestly feel such contempt at the UK population's reliance on cars that I don't even care. How many children are born with body and brain issues because their mothers lived near traffic when pregnant? How many people suffer early deaths because of pollution? Grim.

Erm, probably because they need a car to get to work or to get around. Maybe they work shifts and have no access to public transport...

Maybe public transport would be better, more widely available and reliable if not every person in the country drove literally everywhere? In reality some people need a car but not everyone. Children are born autistic because of car fumes and every person's lungs are permanently scarred with the filth that pours out of cars but by all means drive on hun.
Twatterati · 24/09/2021 22:56

@zeal - you know it's illegal to coast don't you? If the engines not engaged you don't have full control of the car - hence it being 'driving without due care'. In the event of an accident you'd be uninsured. But I like your thinking Smile

gardeninggirl68 · 24/09/2021 22:58

I've been out this evening, and just driven past two petrol stations.

There were queues at one and our local one seems to be completely out.

My car is full and so is DH's purely by luck. (I filled up at start of week, and DH did mid week). We can manage for a while. DH has a few things he needs to do this weekend but he can cycle to work.

I am worried about how long this will last and what the implications are though.

I absolutely would have filled up if I needed it to get to work and didn't know when I would next get it.

On petrol, i would freely say I would panic buy simply because I felt I had no other choice (I wouldn't say that about other things). We just got lucky we didn't need to. If it has been last weekend it had happened we'd be stuffed.

I don't blame any one for panic buying petrol.

8dpwoah · 24/09/2021 23:04

Every kid that was born in a major city with the associated road network has autism then? Super.

sleepfortheweek · 24/09/2021 23:05

I was in the red today so went and put £20 in (don't use a lot per week hence why I didn't fill to the top)

I probably would have waited another 24 hrs as I like to live life on the the petrol edge, but I did go today instead.

Not sure if that's panic buying but I do feel a bit bad!!!!

youkiddingme · 24/09/2021 23:05

They're pulling buses round here, whole routes in some cases, because there are no bus drivers. So public transport won't be an option for some either.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 23:07

How long before leavers start saying that "Petrol is shit anyway"?

HeddaGarbled · 24/09/2021 23:07

Man on Radio 4 today, who was involved with managing the last fuel shortage, said it’s not panic buying unless you’re doing more than just filling up your vehicle. It’s surge buying and is a rational reaction to concerns about shortages. The problem is retailers’ just-in-time supply philosophy which can’t cope with surges.

CorianderAndCream · 24/09/2021 23:10

@Pugmumm

OP it's not the people blame the media!!!
The media doesn't tell people to go bloody panic buy. They do that on their own.
AlwaysLatte · 24/09/2021 23:11

I've never been so thankful to have an electric car. I saw the queues at my local garage today. If I'd had to use our other diesel car I would have also been in the queue admittedly as I look after my Dad and Mum who are both housebound 30 miles apart from each other and take my children to and from school every day. So much running around every day, I would have been stuck without it!

This is where Mumsnets most hated bicycle comes in. Anything in about a 5/6 mile radius is easy enough, some MNers could potentially run it, would take me about 30ish mins to run 3 miles to work for example.
Appreciate those with 20-30 odd mile commutes would struggle though. I did a 60 mile round trip to work on a bicycle once, not something you can maintain every day!

vera99 · 24/09/2021 23:19

There is a green upside angle to all of this.

UserOfManyNames · 24/09/2021 23:25

Well I’m very glad our cars are diesel! Queues were horrendous at every petrol pump today which meant the whole town was gridlocked but thought we’d try this evening and managed to get into a reasonably sized queue (about 50 cars!) at our local Tesco at around 9.40 thinking we wouldn’t make it as it closed at 10.

After about 10 mins there were loads of people shouting out there was no petrol left so a lot of the queue left but a staff member helpfully came out each car still in the queue to say there was still diesel so we were in and out within 5 more minutes. Poor buggers in front of us who left the queue must have been there ages only to leave with nothing and they may have been diesel drivers as well not realising there was some left.

DH is a HGV driver and his work route is impossible without a car so at least we don’t have to worry about him getting to work for the next month .

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/09/2021 23:26

@Finknottlesnewt

OR ... be happy to drive an HGV for minimum wage...
That's precisely what my other half said the other day. He's a HGV driver and even he said he can understand why people don't want to do the job when you can earn pretty much the same amount an hour stacking shelves in tescos and not have to worry about traffic jams and driving hours etc. Me personally if I didn't get pissed off with every other road user, wasn't scared of motorway driving and could be trusted to drive a massive Lorry without getting it jammed somewhere I'd happily do it cos I love my own company
earsup · 24/09/2021 23:27

I filled up as usual about 3 days ago and will last me several months....now out of stock here in east london or massive queue blocking the main roads...!!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 24/09/2021 23:29

For what it’s worth, we had a tanker delivery this morning. We’ve not had problems getting fuel supplies so far, but today we sold over twice the litres of fuel for an average busy Friday. 2 local fuel stations and the big supermarkets in our nearest city ran out today.

Yes people are panic buying. Hyped up by the media and government statements. We’ve not seen much more abuse from customers than normal yet, but if 5 days worth of fuel sells out in 2 who knows? We’ve got scheduled deliveries and can only fit so much into our tanks!

There is no shortage of fuel. The lack of drivers is affecting a couple of chains. It will affect the rest if the panic buying keeps on for more than a couple of days. I wish people would think, but given up on that! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Dave20 · 24/09/2021 23:35

No, the media did not cause this. They reported it.

And they bloody well knew this would happen. Report a shortage of something and people panic buy making the situation worse.
