@lannistunut

Brexiteers believe anything Wink

Funny how only the UK is grinding to a total halt.

Except it’s not just the UK. Google European HGV driver shortage if you don’t believe me.
Finknottlesnewt · 24/09/2021 22:29

Hmmmm so there is no Covid in mainland Europe ?? Yet no shortages !!

ReginaaPhalange · 24/09/2021 22:29

@AndStand

Erm......
My neighbour is a tanker driver and said the exact same thing! There are no issues, well there wasn't before the media started reporting it! I was down at Tesco earlier and put my usual weekly £30 in. The forecourt attendant was putting the sorry no fuel signs out for Diesel. Said 22,000L had been sold today! Said it's madness and said they were getting a delivery during the night but not telling people because they don't want the same panic queues today!
3luckystars · 24/09/2021 22:29

I don’t think there were as many cars on the road back then though. There definitely wasn’t 4 cars per household like one previous poster has. I think this level of cars (with mainly one person in them) is a bit of a unrealistic long term transport solution.

Raggedyanabell · 24/09/2021 22:29

You snooze, you lose. I'm not normally so bloody minded, but right now, its everyone for themselves

Fucking hell! This attitude scares me. I hope you're in the minority.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 22:31

If there's a shortage of drivers all over Europe then the government fishing for drivers back in EU waters is a fool's errand surely?

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/24/food-petrol-shortages-brexit-goods-johnson-botched-deal

It’s tempting for remainers to look at the forecourt queues or depleted supermarket shelves and say, “We told you so” – though if anything, “project fear” painted a rather less apocalyptic picture. Still, that tells only half the story. For one thing, as Lowe says, it was not “baked in” to the act of leaving the EU that, for example, we’d make it so much more difficult for hauliers to operate here. Instead, we are living with the consequences of the specific deal Boris Johnson chose to do with Europe. There were other options that would have kept us closer.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 24/09/2021 22:32

@DoraMaude

The thing I've learned today is that many people are 'running on fumes'. And that no-one on Mumsnet is panic buying, they all just happen to need petrol today. The panic buyers must be all the other people blocking the roads.
Oh Lord! this is exactly what I thought lol - the sheer number of mumsnetters who are running on fumes and just happened to need petrol today is hilarious!

It's all a bit "i'm not panic buying petrol, i'm just buying petrol before the panic buyers buy it all"

lannistunut · 24/09/2021 22:33

I guess Brexit voters will carry on believing bollocks @Doris86 they are not going to change!

TartanJumper · 24/09/2021 22:33

2020: Loo Roll
2021: Petrol
2022: ??

Goshitstricky · 24/09/2021 22:35

It's awful! I'm a care worker, I had a flashing fuel light on the car today and many, many patients to see. I drive to Tesco garage and they were asking everyone if they needed petrol or diesel, I said diesel and originally was turned away before they spotted my uniform and badge.

I was allowed in and had to take off the yellow 'not in use' cap and was allowed to fill the car. I put half a tank in because my car is tiny and economical with fuel so I will get a few days work from it 1/2 full.

However whilst I was there one couple filled both their cars with petrol and then started trying to fill about 6 cans each in their boots... the staff asked them to please stop after the cars were full and they started screaming loud abuse at the staff. It was frightening to see the aggression out of them. SadAngry

Finknottlesnewt · 24/09/2021 22:36

Yep done that .. with reputable webtsuch as Figaro , El Pais Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

No shortages reports. !

Goshitstricky · 24/09/2021 22:37

I had to wait today for fuel, I couldn't afford any yesterday, I had £3.43 in my bank until midnight. Care workers don't get paid particularly well and food prices have sky rocketed. Hmm

Ednadidit · 24/09/2021 22:37

@Tavelo

As a non driver that walks to work I'm enjoying the shitshow. And before any one cries but what about the strain on ambulances, food delivery drivers etc I honestly feel such contempt at the UK population's reliance on cars that I don't even care. How many children are born with body and brain issues because their mothers lived near traffic when pregnant? How many people suffer early deaths because of pollution? Grim.
Good for you? I had a full tank last week but spent every day up and down to hospital whilst my mum was dying and now I’m down to the fuel light. I’m also at full term in my pregnancy so need to make sure that I have petrol for when I inevitably have to go back to hospital. Everyone’s lives are different but pleased for you that you’re ‘enjoying’ difficulties in others’ lives.
Doris86 · 24/09/2021 22:37

@lannistunut

Who said I was a Brexit voter? If I’m talking bollocks please back up your argument with some facts.
Dave20 · 24/09/2021 22:41

Absolute idiots filling up petrol cans too.
It’s true that even 20 years ago there wasn’t four cars in a household. Probably two.
A couple in my road work at the same place and do the same hours.
Do they need two cars? Couldn’t they share?
Maybe I’m being unfair here.

8dpwoah · 24/09/2021 22:41

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon

Meh, remember the 2000 fuel crisis? That was a proper crisis. No WFH then either so far more people desperate for fuel.
Yes! I can remember my maths teacher telling us if it got above £1 a litre she wouldn't be coming to work... Those were the days!
UndertheCedartree · 24/09/2021 22:42

It has been madness! Cars were pouring up the road I walk down to take my DD to school, to get to the petrol stations on the main road. One car drove at speed through a red light almost knocking over a group of school children and cars were beeping at the lollipop man letting children cross! The petrol station nearest to me was out of fuel by school pick up time.

Dave20 · 24/09/2021 22:44

Erm, probably because they need a car to get to work or to get around. Maybe they work shifts and have no access to public transport...

Tumbleweed101 · 24/09/2021 22:45

My daughter who works for NHS just finished a 12hr shift. She has another 12hr shift tomorrow
but can't find anywhere to fill up. She may not be in work tomorrow so the NHS will have lost a nursing assistant because of the panic buying.

NotMyCat · 24/09/2021 22:46

@vera99

If I looked out of my window now and saw zombies running down the road I'd just carry on drinking tea now.
Same. Might offer them a biscuit And if boris says it won't happen, I tend to go with it definitely will happen
Stopsnowing · 24/09/2021 22:47

I was on red. I was waiting for payday today to fill up. I filled up. Save your anger for the government.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 24/09/2021 22:48

I didn't panic buy any groceries. But the problem is that the media drives people to panic buy, and then you have to because otherwise the panic buyers will leave you without. So I went for fuel today because I only have a quarter of a tank and can't risk getting to empty and the panic buyers have taken the lot. Although I rarely let it get below a quarter anyway so I could argue I was going to go anyway.

Mumguilt12 · 24/09/2021 22:49

I’m so pissed off of all the people saying “don’t panic buy” on social media and mumsnet.

No I don’t work for the NHS, I’m not a career but I have places to be too. I had 1/8 of a tank and needed to fill up, just like I always do when I get that low.

Could do without these “aren’t I so wonderful” people telling me I’m panic buying. No mate, I’m just “buying” because I’m nearly empty.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 24/09/2021 22:52

Well, I'm off out to hunt for petrol. Do you reckon I can work from home if I can't find any, or will they insist I take 3 buses in and 3 buses back when my job has been done from home for 18 months just fine? Never mind, I think we all know the answer Hmm

Mumguilt12 · 24/09/2021 22:52

Also, whilst I am immensely grateful for nhs workers, teachers etc there are other jobs that are important. They might just not be so obvious. Mine included. I have just as much right to get to work.
