@User5827372728 good for you. You’re part of the problem.

flowery · 24/09/2021 20:35

@linelgreen

We were caught out years ago with the last petrol supply issue so today filled both mine and Oh cars up and also took the kids cars and filled them up so if we run out we could always use theirs as they are at Uni so not taken cars with them. Petrol is something that does not go off so will not be wasted as it will get used and cannot imagine what we would do without a car to use as public transport is terrible here.
Congratulations, you are the cause of the problem. But don’t worry, you’ll be fine, with your two full tanks one each and two more full tanks in unused cars “just in case”.

🙄

@vera99

New day new horror. Thank god that nice Mr Johnson got Brexit done way back and has taken back control.

The chronic and developing crises aren't affecting those countries as hard as here. And it's not Covid, since that's affecting everywhere. There aren't the same empty shelves in the EU as here. The severity of the problem is unique to Great Britain. Looks like the wheels are well and truly coming off the back of that bloody bus.

But, but... blue passports people!

Fucking hell this thread is agist.

Old people worry. They particularly worry about not being able to get help.

OK, we all need to get to work/school. But if we can't understand the flat panic of an 80 year old with no petrol in their car, then we need to rethink a bit.

Angrymum22 · 24/09/2021 20:36

Filled my car up yesterday as it was nearly empty. No queues or panic buying at 5pm yesterday.
I have a load of hospital appointments next week before I have surgery for breast cancer. Since I won’t be driving for a month my car can act as back up if we can’t get diesel for the other one.
From what I could see when we went grocery shopping it was mainly the elderly stockpiling as usual. Most of the fuel bought today will still be sitting on their drives at Christmas.

Agreed
TurquoiseBaubles · 24/09/2021 20:37

I remember the 70s petrol rationing when my dad who was a doctor had to cycle 20 miles to work, and then stayed in the hospital for almost a month so that he would be available if necessary.

If kids can't get to school, the world won't end.

Allycott · 24/09/2021 20:40

There's this thing - if you have money you can buy something. AND THATS THE WAY IT IS

LucyFox · 24/09/2021 20:41

@Shitfuckcommaetc

After not being able to fill up on the way back from work today I'm having to walk 3 miles to work to start at 6am to start my 12hr shift. Cant afford a taxi and buses don't run that early

So yea, anyone with a full tank sitting on the driveway who fancies giving me a lift?!

Selfish fuckers.

I’ll give you a lift if you live locally …but I suspect that’s not what you want to hear, you want to rant at anyone who filled up their car today irrespective of the reason why 🙄 I filled up on my way home from work, because I had
danni0509 · 24/09/2021 20:42

Managed to get some at 6pm.

Petrol light came on this morning, nipped to two garages both had cones out closing off the forecourt had to go home and ring around a few. Tesco said they had just refilled at teatime so went straight away and it was absolutely rammed.

Bluehasnoclue · 24/09/2021 20:42

My petrol was on 0. Tried to go this morning & couldn’t as the petrol station on the way was closed due to covid. Then after work went to first garage. Watched man in front of me fill up his Range Rover fully & then also fill up 5 cans too with his wife, which I didn’t think was even allowed! I then pulled up to the pump & they came out of the garage to put up signs to say it was completely sold out. I had to beg the employee as I really had 0 miles & they put a few drops of super unleaded into my car which was enough for me to drive to 4 other petrol stations which all had completely run out! Finally got through on the phone to one who confirmed they had a few hours worth of petrol left & headed there, waited 45 minutes but finally have some!

Absolutely insane!

ShinyThingsDistractMe · 24/09/2021 20:43

I have quarter of a tank and work on community services. I'm going to let everyone panic buy today and tomorrow and then try on Sunday evening when most stations get their fuel or early Monday morning.

Most people in my city should have a full tank by then 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thesearmsofmine · 24/09/2021 20:47

DH managed to fill up this evening at the second petrol station he tried. I’m so glad that we can go away now, maybe it’s selfish but this is the break we were meant to have gone on on the day we went into lockdown last March and is very much needed.

Terriffids · 24/09/2021 20:48

This whole mess has been caused by 3 things:

  1. Our incompetent government getting us into this mess in the first place
  2. The blood-thirsty media whipping up every story into a major catastrophe
  3. Idiot consumers who can't see when they're being spun and happily display their selfishness whilst trying to justify their actions by their needs being greater than others
maddening · 24/09/2021 20:48

Good old British media, only they can turn a few lorries for a handful of BP garages in to a national shortage by whipping up panic buying, they got their story.

DoraMaude · 24/09/2021 20:49

The thing I've learned today is that many people are 'running on fumes'. And that no-one on Mumsnet is panic buying, they all just happen to need petrol today. The panic buyers must be all the other people blocking the roads.

colouringindoors · 24/09/2021 20:51

Interesting how everyone has a fabulous reason for filling up their car to the brim today of all days and no one will admit to panic buying…..

Exactly.

Timeisavirtue · 24/09/2021 20:54

The media shouldn’t put this stuff out because much of the uk population are stupid! I knew people were stupid but this last 18 months they’ve exceeded my expectations which are pretty low! I’ve just dropped dd friend home who lives a couple of roads away, we were walking and there’s now still a crazy queue 20 people deep...
I don’t know what’s so hard to understand.... buy as normal and everything will be fine, panic buy and it leads to shortages. Luckily DP filled up early this morning on his way to work before all of this crazy ness, he’s a hgv driver...it’s only bp having issues due to lack of lorry drivers.

GatoradeMeBitch · 24/09/2021 20:54

Saying "well people need petrol" is a bit disingenuous. Clearly some people who don't need petrol are going out to get some, because it's not normal to have lines down the road from petrol stations.

I just hope it doesn't have a knockdown effect, cause real shortages that then impact on other services, because then you'll have Joanne and Steve complaining that their kids school taxis have been cancelled and their deliveries are late, all while their second car sits on the drive with a full tank of petrol they didn't need to go out and get.

I can't imagine we would actually be at the point light comes on. Emergency car cover providers and tow trucks must be ranking it in today.

But yeah. Dh was the one who was buying today because he always leaves it until he shops in certain cash and carry friday or sat. Luckily he got there early so the queue wasn't bad.

Parker231 · 24/09/2021 20:56

There is no shortage of petrol just a shortage of lorry drivers to deliver it to the pumps. You can blame it on poor wages and working conditions for lorry drivers and Brexit and the end of FOM.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/09/2021 20:58

@Zeal

The best option is to only half fill the tank. We never, ever need a full tank. Let me explain.

Whenever I go from A to B, I have noticed they are never at the same height above sea level. Therefore, logically half the journey is going to going down and the other half is going to be going up. When I am going downhill, gravity will allow the car to roll forward and I do not need the engine running to achieve that. When I need to go uphill, I can engage the engine and use that power to drive the car uphill against gravity.

It is that simple. I use the empty top part of the tank to go downhill and the bottom half, which contains the fuel of course, to go uphill. Because I never need to completely fill my tank, my fuel bills are only 50% of what they would otherwise be.

Which is fine if you live where there are hills and even then I'm doubtful it would work anyway given my driveway is on an incline and my car juddered to stop way before it reaches its parking place when I let it coast down in neutral with no engine on. Where I live it's bar 2 bridges it's flat so there's no way that would ever work
MumofAceDD · 24/09/2021 20:58

Well. I had less than 30 miles in my tank, and in usual times I might have got it tomorrow when I drop DS off at his dad’s. But then if everyone else has bought it all, I cannot get him to and from his dad’s, so yes, I got petrol today. Was busy but not queues and I didn’t fill the tank so 🤷🏻‍♀️
