I had two bars left, normally put £20 but went for a full tank. First two petrol stations had huge queues. Happy to avoid them for a while now

lannistunut · 24/09/2021 20:59

Perhaps instead of blaming those who are having to worry about petrol supplies we should be looking at our shit government who have created this problem with their fucking ridiculous hard Brexit and refusal to allow overseas workers into the country.

I see they are now backtracking over visas. Controlling our fucking borders lasted a long time then.

Laughsaminute · 24/09/2021 20:59

Oh my goodness @linelgreen are you really selfish or just really, really thick?

Explosivefarts · 24/09/2021 21:00

@Stormwhale

We need petrol for two long journeys this weekend. I'm really concerned we aren't going to be able to get it. We have tickets for an expensive attraction then supposed to see family we haven't seen in months now Sunday, so I have sent dh out to fill up the car, but no luck so far. I hope the people with the full cars ready to sit on their driveways are happy with themselves!
They have every right to fill up their car as you do. Your expensive attraction doesn’t trump that
M4J4 · 24/09/2021 21:01

Usually hate my congested city streets and long for rural leaving, but I guess the benefit is there are a myrriad transport options. Must be worrying for those who rely on the car.

stillcrazyafterall · 24/09/2021 21:01

I am on holiday 400 miles from home, I really hope I can find enough to get us back, otherwise holiday will be extended indefinitely. The queue for the petrol at Asda was stupid!

RahRahRa · 24/09/2021 21:01

It’s all just totally bonkers. First loo roll, now this….I remember similar happening with petrol a few years ago - it all calmed down pretty quickly.

Thank goodness I filled up about a week ago….I try not to let it go too much below 1/4 of a tank anyway because my car seems to run better with a fuller tank and the fuel runs out very quickly on the last 1/4.

Flobbertybillop · 24/09/2021 21:03

@OhGiveUp

I can't believe people drive their cars on reserve, or wait until it's practically running on fresh air before they put fuel in. Nor saying that they can't afford to put more fuel in before pay day. You know how much fuel your vehicle uses so budget accordingly on pay day for it. So if you can't get to work then it's your own fault. Someone up thread mentioned their fuel light had come on and was going to get fuel on their way home, but didn't. Why not put it in before the light comes on like, oh I don't know, earlier on in the week?
It must be lovely to be so smug about finances
MidnightMeltdown · 24/09/2021 21:03

Oh bloody hell. I don't drive but if my deliveries don't arrive next week I'm blaming you lot and your panic buying 😂

Time for government sponsored HGV lessons for the unemployed I think!

frumpety · 24/09/2021 21:04

I have just put £20 in on the way home from my 12 hr shift, not filling it because I don't need to, not going to do more than 200 miles in the next few days, had less than 30 miles in the tank and was worried I might not get home and then on to another petrol station tomorrow if I didn't. It was the amount I was going to put in today, regardless of other people panic buying.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/09/2021 21:04

@MyLandlordIsAWOL

There's a limit to how much anyone can actually panic buy petrol - you get one tank full and you can't buy any more until you've used some. Unlike loo roll and pasta.

If people are facing the possibility of not being able to get to work etc then it's a very logical step to buy their petrol a little earlier.

Yeah that's great if you can afford to fill up a week earlier. A lot of us can't until pay day plus if I could put £20 in now it'd be nigh on gone by Sunday night/Monday morning
lazyarse123 · 24/09/2021 21:05

I put £20 in mine today because it genuinely had 6 miles left and it's payday.
I didn't know about any issues until dh asked me how much it was. I don't look at the price i've got £20 or whatever and that's what it gets. A bit of a queue but not much.
He's a massive fan of driving miles to save 5p a litre he's going to be screwed this week.

Absolutely selfish fuckers
Droite · 24/09/2021 21:06

I'll admit to filling up in order to go on a 5 hour drive for a long awaited and much needed holiday,, but I didn't have to queue. But for the holiday I probably wouldn't have bothered because I live somewhere with good public transport. Sadly it wasn't an option for the holiday.

KevinTheKoala · 24/09/2021 21:06

What makes me laugh (if I don't laugh I'll cry) is that this problem is caused by lack of HGV drivers. It was ONLY BP garages affected and yet now thanks to the idiot media and stupid panic buyers, my partner who is a HGV driver can't get to work. Never mind that there will be ambulances, police cars, community carers etc. Who won't be able to get fuel too. My town is completley out of fuel.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 21:07

What fresh hell is this?

Parker231 · 24/09/2021 21:08

From Twitter

EG Group imposes £30 limit on fuel amid soaring demand

The EG Group, which operates 389 petrol stations in the UK, has imposed a £30 limit on purchases of fuel due to "unprecedented customer demand".

The retailer confirmed this limit excludes HGV drivers and emergency services "due to their vital role at this time".

In a statement, the group said: "This is a company decision to ensure all our customers have a fair chance to refuel and to enable our sites to carry on running smoothly.

"We kindly ask everyone visiting our sites to treat our colleagues, supply chain partners and customers with respect during these very challenging times.

"All of EG Group's UK sites remain open and operational to serve customers."

FrshStrt · 24/09/2021 21:15

I did feel like I had to justify being there this evening! In my defence my tank was down to 66 miles and I did fill up but I always do a full tank.

vera99 · 24/09/2021 21:15

If I looked out of my window now and saw zombies running down the road I'd just carry on drinking tea now.

ShowOfHands · 24/09/2021 21:15

No petrol anywhere local to me and DH and I both need fuel. He's a copper on nights and is cycling a 60 mile round trip to do his shift tonight. I'm going to have to cancel the children's opticians appointments tomorrow (20 miles away, no public transport) and we've waited 6 weeks for them. DD needs a new prescription. Heave knows how much longer she'll have to wait. Local petrol stations all ran out today while I was working.

HeadPain · 24/09/2021 21:20

News says that people buying when they wouldn't usually buy is causing shortage, yes there is driver shortage, but some expert said on the news that if people bought at normal rates there would be no shortage. Someone really admitted on here that they filled up their two cars AND filled up their two kids' cars, their kids who are AWAY AT UNI, not with their cars, and therefore not needing it and not using it. Ffs... Sorry but people like you guys and the people filling up petrol cans are causing shortage. Really the stations should have prevented people filling up multiple petrol cans at least.

Could you go early? Tesco staff said to me they refilled at teatime today and will again at around 5am/6am tomorrow. I phoned in advance rather than using fuel driving around.
Tavelo · 24/09/2021 21:20

As a non driver that walks to work I'm enjoying the shitshow. And before any one cries but what about the strain on ambulances, food delivery drivers etc I honestly feel such contempt at the UK population's reliance on cars that I don't even care. How many children are born with body and brain issues because their mothers lived near traffic when pregnant? How many people suffer early deaths because of pollution? Grim.

Laufeythejust · 24/09/2021 21:21

It’s awful- we almost missed our click and collect food shop as it was impossible to get into tescos because of the petrol station. I have just had to go out now to a petrol station in the middle of nowhere to fill up so I can get to work. My DP is very smug because he tells me that constantly running on fumes is a bad idea. If everyone just filled up as normal it wouldn’t be like this. I hate the media.

BungleandGeorge · 24/09/2021 21:23

Do people really only have less than 30 miles in their tank, my petrol light comes on some were around 45.
I’ve got one bar left, suppressed the desire to go and fill up but will need to over the weekend. I expect a lot will have deliveries. At the end of the day the companies want to make money and they did say they had 80% of comfortable capacity.
