Are fucking selfish, and will be the first to moan when they're takeaway can't be delivered, they can't get a taxi, or places are short staffed as people CAN'T GET TO WORK

god I'm pissed off

A 3 mile taxi won't cost you more than a fiver. Get real you're looking at £8-9 at least

EatYourVegetables · 24/09/2021 19:56

I am quite scared that buses, ambulances, and food delivery trucks might not be able to get enough petrol.

As for people who “have tickets to an expensive event”, or “can’t cycle because 2 miles is far”, or can’t use public transport because it’s full of plebs, or complain about cyclists, or claim it’s impossible to live without 2 cars, or advise others on MN to not even think of dating a man who doesn’t drive - I have no pity, just some badly suppressed schadenfreude.

StrongLegs · 24/09/2021 19:56

I'm pretty certain we've got a full tank of petrol in the car if anyone needs it. We can walk most places we need to go.

jaundicedoutlook · 24/09/2021 19:56

All these f petrol ‘topping up’ loo roll hoarding mask avoiding Brexit voting wankers.

The whole country is run by idiots for idiots - what can we really expect?

wewereliars · 24/09/2021 19:56

And as always the people with the least suffer most.

I have had loads of money, and I have had hunting down the back of sofa for coins no money.

Guess when I was often driving on fumes?

LastStarfighter · 24/09/2021 19:57

@colouringindoors

100% I am f*cking furious. Queues at every garage within miles, my town has now run out. We have to drive ds to school and genuinely do not know if that's going to even be possible!

I am so sick of the selfishness of some - or actually, lots - of people..Do they not want their doctors, nurses, vets etc to be able to get to work?!!!!

So you need it for essential reasons, but clearly “other people” don’t?

This thread is making me lose faith in human nature.

I believe there to be very, very few people who are actually hoarding petrol (other than the poster who filled up 4 cars Hmm), but simply a lot of people who have a relatively good reason for not taking the risk of running out … dr, nurse, caring responsibilities, medical appointments, petrol light on and need to get to work.

But apparently very few can understand that OTHER people may have good reasons. Surely all the OTHER people in the queue are selfish.

Dailywalk · 24/09/2021 19:57

Petrol light was on so had to get fuel today. Felt very guilty about it too though didn’t buy any more than I usually would.

Of course people will panic buy. We were told not to which just fuels the panic buying all the more (excuse the pun)

Anotheruser02 · 24/09/2021 19:58

Going to work isn't optional for many with bills to pay. I love the way any nurse or social care worker assumes that everyone else is selfish for making sure they can get to work too. We're going back to last March now deciding that everyone else's lives are trivial.

For the person with an expensive treat booked this weekend, I think that's important, it's planned and looked forward to, that's the kind of thing that gets you through the mundane.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 24/09/2021 19:59

@MilduraS

*Not that I should have to explain, but on a weekday I drop my kids at school (primary) half mile in the opposite direction, then have 20 minutes to get to work and park. It's cutting it very fine. No way would I make it cycling.

So your kids can't walk half a mile and you refuse to walk the half mile there and back but anyone else buying petrol because they need it is a selfish fucker? Hmm

Are you a bit dense?

I can't bend time!

@jaundicedoutlook I’m at about the same stage as you. Used the car block preventing us getting into (and later, out of) Decathlon due to the nearby Asda fuel station frenzy, to have a little rant to my poor DD about it symbolising where we currently have sunk to as a country :(

girlmom21 · 24/09/2021 19:59

@Shitfuckcommaetc happily if you're in a reasonably close proximity.

If you're not, ask a neighbour or relative to borrow one.

Ori3 · 24/09/2021 20:00

Like other species, anytime humans are confronted with competition for resources/threat to survival they revert to that primal programming which flips us into selfish mode. We’re designed by nature to prioritise ourselves over others. The problem is we like to imagine we’re more advanced than we are, but civilisation is only a very thin veneer over millions of years of ruthless evolution.

So the selfish gene is present in everyone and would become selfish action under extreme competitive circumstances. Just depends what your trigger point is. For some it’s petrol, for most it’s food.

MeanderingGently · 24/09/2021 20:00

I always go to the local Tesco on Friday night after work. Yes, I have half a tank full of petrol but I live rurally and I always top it up to full, I can't be caught out with no petrol as I have to drive to the nearest market town to even get any more.

In our market town, Tesco was extraordinary, marshals directing car queues and we had to queue all round the car park and back again before even reaching the pumps. Our local BP station is closed and our Sainsbury's doesn't have pumps anyway, no other petrol for miles... Couldn't believe what I was seeing.....

Whitefire · 24/09/2021 20:00

@Bucanarab

Missing the point somewhat but it's quite remarkable the number of people who apparently drive around with the red light on or "need to drive to x but don't have enough fuel to do it".

Just treat a half tank as empty and you'll always have fuel in case of an emergency/shortage.

Oh no you can't fill up if you have half a tank, you'll have half of MN baying for your blood. Grin
findmeaholiday · 24/09/2021 20:01

@Doris86

That made me chuckle. Thank you!

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 24/09/2021 20:03

@Shitfuckcommaetc

I'm not sure where you live, but it's £3.10 here before the taxi even moves!!!
Obviously somewhere not very big. If I remember rightly a taxi from the town centre where I live to one of the caravan parks is around £12-15 and that's just over 5 miles
WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 24/09/2021 20:03

Utterly bloody selfish and stupid.

I have no fuel and the petrol stations near me have run out. Very heavily pregnant and the hospital is 30 mins away, guess I will now have to call a taxi if I go into labour any time soon.

It was the same with the food panic buying last year, everybody just buys a little bit more than they need and think that they’re not part of problem because they’re not buying excessive amounts, but the supply chain is not set up for it.

Enwi · 24/09/2021 20:03

Threads like this really annoy me. Sure, there will be the odd person with almost a full tank of petrol charging to the petrol station to fill up because they’re —anxious— incredibly selfish.

The vast majority of people will be those who needed to fill up soon anyway, and like most reasonable and level headed person thought “hmm, I’m running pretty low actually, best fill up”.

It’s exactly like when the pandemic hit and supermarkets were ransacked. The hysteria just makes things worse, and turning on one another doesn’t help. It was demonstrated then just how poorly our supply changes cope with a sudden change in demand, no matter how small.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 24/09/2021 20:03

I suspect if they'd used surge pricing a la Uber they would have weeded out the people who didn't actually need petrol today.

However, that would have punished the people who did need it.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/09/2021 20:03

@Shitfuckcommaetc

After not being able to fill up on the way back from work today I'm having to walk 3 miles to work to start at 6am to start my 12hr shift. Cant afford a taxi and buses don't run that early

So yea, anyone with a full tank sitting on the driveway who fancies giving me a lift?!

Selfish fuckers.

If you've left your car so short on petrol today that you can't drive 6 miles, then more fool you frankly.
User5827372728 · 24/09/2021 20:04

@whynotwhatknot

Seems a bit silly to be heavily pregnant, 30 min from hospital and no petrol!! This is has been brewing all week

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2021 20:06

So you need it for essential reasons, but clearly “other people” don’t?

I agree with this. Everyone having a go about other selfish people..

DoubleTweenQueen · 24/09/2021 20:06

I have half a tank - 200 miles in my small and economic car, if I drive really carefully. We are at least 6miles from a train station. Cycling to one would be doable, but very scary. The bus takes all day, and sightseeing every single village, to get to where we would need to be each morning.
It might last me until Thursday. Fingers crossed. Wonder what the situation will be then?

Spyro1234 · 24/09/2021 20:07

Anyone who is defending it on this thread definitely panic bought today. 😬 Idiots

Shitfuckcommaetc · 24/09/2021 20:07

Yea, if only I had access to funds that could ensure my car was fully fueled at all times.
