To ask cleaner if they've been vaccinated?

204 replies

daisiesandpeonies · 22/09/2021 12:44

I am keen to have a cleaner again, my pre-pandemic cleaner is refusing to have the covid vaccine (I know this because we are friends on Facebook and she's constantly posting conspiracy theories.) I felt it would be more respectful to just discreetly get a new cleaner than tell her I'll only ask her back if she gets vaccinated. However how do I tell an agency that I'd only like a vaccinated cleaner? Are they even allowed to ask, so should I?

Do you have children?
Have you checked if their teachers are vaccinated?
are you going to check if the cashier in Tesco's is vaccinated?
are you going to check if the bus driver is vaccinated?
are you going to check if your colleagues are vaccinated?

My point is that you can't go through life knowing everything about other people's health. You can take precautions, such as have your own 2 jabs, wear a mask and socially distance. But you WILL come into contact with people who are not vaccinated & you will have no way of knowing this

My hairdresser asked me if I was vaccinated (yes) and I asked her the same question (answer was another yes). I'm paying her for a service so it's no different for a cleaner.

Except you’re in close contact with a hairdresser. Maybe your cleaner works differently to mine but I’m not even in the same building when she’s providing her service.

you are under no obligation to disclose to your hairdresser your vaccine history. Likewise she is also under obligation to disclose to you her vaccine history.
Thewiseoneincognito · 22/09/2021 14:02

You do understand their vaccination status has no effect on you whatsoever? She could be quadruple vaccinated yet still pass it on to you. The real question is do you want a stranger in your home who could be infected regardless of if they’re jabbed or not.

@Peaplant20

Whoaa sorry you’re getting such a hard time on this thread OP. It’s completely reasonable to ask and anyone I know would think the same. Lots of people saying none of your business - they don’t have to tell you no one is forcing them. But it’s perfectly reasonable to ask. Also not sure why people are saying why does it matter if you’re double jabbed when everyone knows perfectly well that you can still get it and pass it on when you’re double jabbed so they’re just being childish saying that imo.
Ofc I'm having a hard time, my fault for posting something with the word 'vaccine' in it Hmm I'll probably stop reading the replies now I have my answer. The thread is confirming what I felt beforehand - I shouldn't ask. I hadn't actually thought about people lying, but that too. With a loved one at risk it's not worth knowingly increasing our chances of catching covid at present.

@OldEvilOwl

No it's none of your business to be honest
If she was coming into my homes it would be my business as it is for the op
TheGrumpyGoat · 22/09/2021 14:05

Clean your own house.

GiveMeNovocain · 22/09/2021 14:08

Maybe just don't lick the cleaner?

FWBNC · 22/09/2021 14:08

People should be able to make bad choices for themselves

@PurpleDaisies

Yes, they should, unfortunately they're not just making that choice for themselves, but others around them as well.

LookAtMoiPloise · 22/09/2021 14:09

Absolutely none of your business.

And like a pp said, if you're so worried - clean your own house.

winniedaisy · 22/09/2021 14:09

Are you serious?!
Somebody elses medical history is absolutely none of your business.
Keep your nose out or clean your own house.

EducatingArti · 22/09/2021 14:12

@DartmoorChef

What difference does it make to you if anyone else is or isn't vaccinated. The vaccine only protects the vaccinated person from possibly developing more serious symptoms... it doesn't protect you whatsoever.
Yes it does protect the op. If someone is vaccinated then they are a lot less likely to get Covid. If they haven't got Covid they aren't able to pass it on to the op. Therefore the op is less likely to get Covid from them and so is more protected!
HalzTangz · 22/09/2021 14:12

It's not mandatory for cleaners to be vaccinated so don't see how can can ask/request them to divulge their personal medical history to you.

You can still catch covid from vaccinated people. So I don't see how an unvaccinated person working in your home alters anything

PurpleDaisies · 22/09/2021 14:14

It isn’t vaccination or nothing. Reducing transmission risk is just as much (if not more) about making sure you’re distancing, making sure there’s ventilation, isolating if you have symptoms, wearing a mask etc.

There are massive sections of society who aren’t even able to be vaccinated at the moment because they’re too young. On lots of the threads like this, the posters most adamant about the evil unvaccinated staying away from society in case they kill us all have unvaccinated school age children at home.

FWBNC · 22/09/2021 14:15

@daisiesandpeonies

YANBU to want to reduce the risk to your vulnerable family member. Advertising for a clear who is fully vaccinated is fine, & of course it's safer (not safe, but safer).

I see you've decided not to bother, it's the safest approach, but if you do find you need some help (and none if the snarky twats know your situation) then don't hesitate to advertise for one who is fully vaccinated.

EducatingArti · 22/09/2021 14:16

Sigh. If they are vaccinated they are less likely vto catch Covid so of course they are then less likely to pass it on. They can't pass it on if they haven't got it.

itsgrand · 22/09/2021 14:18
@Yerroblemom1923
That’s not true. Vaccinated doesn’t mean you’re safe at all.

I’m double vaccinated and I’ve never been so unwell in my life as I was last week with covid. My husband was also very unwell and worryingly unwell for 24 hours, again double vaccinated.

I think OP is being unreasonable too but I am getting increasingly frustrated with the vaccine=safe myth.
The reason I have gotten so annoyed about this thread is that today I've learned that someone I know has died of covid. Double vaxed. No underlying health issues.
I am a great believer in these vaccines and I have had mine. However I am aghast at people insisting on knowing who has a vaccine and who hasnt. For two reasons ........... your vaccine history is no one elses bloody business. Second reason is that there seems to some myth that it is unvaccinated people who are spreading it and dying. This is not true.
I fully encourage vaccine take up. But honestly this whole thinking that you are entitled to other peoples vaccine information is really disturbing me. Especially when it serves no purpose.

Snuggleworm · 22/09/2021 14:18

I am prob going to get flamed here but I agree with OP to a certain degree.
An unvaccinated person is more likely to catch and spread Covid than a vaccinated one.

EducatingArti · 22/09/2021 14:19

If it helps. I am self employed ( not cleaning) and regularly go into other people's homes. I have been very open about the fact that I have been double jabbed and have also asked for other mitigation like opening windows.
I think it is fine to ask.

Lochroy · 22/09/2021 14:19

Of course you can't ask them, but if it's that much of a concern you could always drop in some general Covid chit chat during the interview and see if they yield the info.

More likely, yes.

If you’re having a stranger in your house, you don’t know which vaccinated ones will be able to spread COVID to you and which ones won’t

thewhatsit · 22/09/2021 14:20

I don’t think you can ask and I don’t think you should.

Exactly how is the cleaner that much of a risk to you anyway?

When I’ve had cleaners they either a) tended to come when I was out or b) if I was in, I’d try and keep out of their way because it was otherwise bloody awkward that they were there cleaning my house and I was just at home.. not cleaning. Keep windows open, let them do their work in peace and that’s that.

An unvaccinated person who wears a mask, social distances, doesn’t go to indoor gatherings etc is probably less likely to catch Covid than a vaccinated person who goes to raves, has mass orgies or whatever. If we want to know vaccine status, why not also ask if they wear a mask? If they follow social distancing? If they frequent nightclubs?
HelloTreacle9 · 22/09/2021 14:20

I've had the same conversation, cautiously, with my cleaning agency as my cleaner was making a big noise about 'not believing in the vaccine'. The agency said they had actually been asked this question a lot, especially by people with clinically vulnerable family members (as I have) and by older people. It's fine to request that someone who is in your home for hours at a time is vaccinated, or masked, or has done a test.
