To ask cleaner if they've been vaccinated?

daisiesandpeonies · 22/09/2021 12:44

I am keen to have a cleaner again, my pre-pandemic cleaner is refusing to have the covid vaccine (I know this because we are friends on Facebook and she's constantly posting conspiracy theories.) I felt it would be more respectful to just discreetly get a new cleaner than tell her I'll only ask her back if she gets vaccinated. However how do I tell an agency that I'd only like a vaccinated cleaner? Are they even allowed to ask, so should I?

You can advertise for a vaccinated cleaner.

You have no way of knowing if they’re telling the truth.

What does it matter to you if you've had the vaccine? Aren't you 'protected' now anyway? 😂 How highly must you think of yourself to think you have the right to ask another person about their medical records. Clean your own shit up

ADreadedSunnyDay · 22/09/2021 12:58

Get a grip OP. Either get a cleaner or don't but their medical details / history are none of your business. I hate that it now seems to be reasonable to expect people to divulge personal medical info because of Covid - so much for confidentiality.

user64325 · 22/09/2021 13:01

You are not being at all unreasonable. I hazard a guess that someone has posted a link to this in an anti vaxxer group which is why you are getting such a hard time. Someone who is pro vax will have zero issue showing you proof of vaccination.

It isn't at all like asking someone if they have the TB vaccine since one is rare, and one is extremely likely 🙄.

Obviouspretzel · 22/09/2021 13:01

Absolutely ridiculous request. You wouldn't feel entitled to any other private information about a cleaner, so why would you ask this ?

Anyone coming into your house can have any number of medical conditions. Why is covid any different ?

Nonsense. I am double vaccinated and massively pro vaccination. You can look at my posting history if you like.
seaandsandcastles · 22/09/2021 13:04

No, you shouldn’t be asking. It’s absolutely none of your business.

Address your own medical issues and sort your irrational anxiety out.

Extract from US CDC briefing

“The risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection in fully vaccinated people cannot be completely eliminated as long as there is continued community transmission of the virus. Early data suggest infections in fully vaccinated persons are more commonly observed with the Delta variant than with other SARS-CoV-2 variants. However, data show fully vaccinated persons are less likely than unvaccinated persons to acquire SARS-CoV-2, and infections with the Delta variant in fully vaccinated persons are associated with less severe clinical outcomes. Infections with the Delta variant in vaccinated persons potentially have reduced transmissibility than infections in unvaccinated persons, although additional studies are needed”

So the jury is still outon transmissabililty of Delta in vaccinated and unvaccinated people. Given that we do not know, it seems prudent to me to err on the side of caution especially if you or family members are vulnerable.

So in your situation I would ask for a vaccinated cleaner. They are also less likely to catch it and therefore less likely to be absent for a long time because they have Covid.

PurpleDaisies · 22/09/2021 13:05

@VelvetChairGirl

according to the CDC vaccines dont stop you catching or passing on Delta or Mu.
It makes it less likely.
Skyla2005 · 22/09/2021 13:06

It won't make any difference being it doesn't stop u passing it on !

Absolute bollocks.

I’m pro vaccination, have had both jabs while BF, but it is absolutely nobody else’s business and I would tell anyone who asked me to piss off and stop being so nosey.

😂😜😂😜

DecentPleasant · 22/09/2021 13:07

Not unreasonable. Explain to agency you’d like a vaccinated cleaner. All of you people being breezy about it - where would we be if there was no vaccine. I wish more weight was put on being vaccinated. Can’t bear idiots who think it’s going to harm them. Pathetic.
Enjoy having a sensible cleaner who wants to get out of the mess we are in.

People really need to do some proper reading about the benefits of these vaccines.

MossyBottom · 22/09/2021 13:07

@cloudacious

I think it's an entirely reasonable request during a global pandemic and does affect your health since vaccination reduces transmission.

You can advertise for a vaccinated cleaner.

This. If you ask and they refuse to disclose there is your answer. I've seen cleaners, carers, home hairdressers all advertising that they are fully vaccinated. It's perfectly reasonable for someone who is coming into your home.

What a crock! Some people disagree and it must be because someone's called the anti-vaxxers in? I am pro-vax, vaccinated but would tell my employer to go jump if they demanded proof.

As to whether OP is BU, who can tell with no background?

JaneTheVirgin · 22/09/2021 13:08

What is with these responses?!

You have the right to ask, and they have the right to decline to tell you. With that, you then have the right to not hire them.

No one is being forced to get the vaccine, but those who choose not to then have to accept others who have chosen to be vaccinated may not want to employ them in their house/workplace.

Vaccination status has been asked for countless jobs before, and many vaccines mandated and no one cared in the slightest. I've lost track of how many tests and vaccines I had to be employed in the NHS. But now people have decided a VIRUS is political, it's a problem.

And yes, the vaccine does lower your chance of getting covid, which then lowers your chance of passing it on, AND lowers your chance of dying.
Stop spreading misinformation.

Oh great, here's another daily MN dose of 'everyone who thinks differently must be everything I hate'.

Most people on this thread are long standing posters who pre-date covid. We are not an assemble team for anti-vaxx shit.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 22/09/2021 13:08

At an ethical level I feel it would be unreasonable to ask this, personally. I don't think it's any of your business.

Technically, I think the agency assuming they are the employer can ask that employees are vaccinated, and hold information on employees' vaccination status.

(If they're contract or freelance staff I think it's a murkier picture.)

However, I'm not sure whether an agency can give that information to you. There are privacy protections around employees' personal data. (The ICO has an interesting, if long, page on this.)

You might be able to request a vaccinated cleaner in the broadest sense, if you can justify why you're asking and it is not discriminatory.

But if, say, Jane and John turn up to clean, I don't think you can ask 'have Jane and John been vaccinated?' because it would be a privacy breach.

What makes you think those of us that think asking a cleaner to disclose this information don’t know about vaccines?

Vaccines are brilliant. I think everyone (nearly!) should hand them,. I also think it should be a personal choice.

cloudacious · 22/09/2021 13:09

You can have whoever you want in your own home.

What you cannot do is know if they're telling the truth because you rightly have no access to their medical records.

It's a reasonable concern.

I'm doubled vaccinated and I would refuse to tell someone who has no business in knowing if I was or not.

In April, Public Health England reported the results of a large study of COVID-19 transmission involving more than 365,000 households with a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated members.

It found immunisation with either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine reduced the chance of onward virus transmission by 40-60%. This means that if someone became infected after being vaccinated, they were only around half as likely to pass their infection on to others compared to infected people who weren’t vaccinated.

MadKittenWoman · 22/09/2021 13:12

My neighbour caught Covid from her cleaner. Having the vaccine doesn’t completely stop people transmitting or catching the virus, but it does reduce the chances.
