Prince Philip’s mustard prank

Dogmatix34 · 21/09/2021 10:12

I don’t have any very strong feelings about the Royal family except to find it all a bit outdated but I found this story a real sign of how out of touch they are. The thought of my grandfather encouraging me to squirt mustard on to his ceiling! Since he a) wouldn’t have an army of cleaners to clear it up b) only had a small number of rooms to go in to and would not have wanted disgusting mustard all over the place c) didn’t have incredibly high ceilings where perhaps you wouldn’t have noticed.
I could understand if it was squirting mustard outside or maybe on clothes that could be washed but I found that story really jarring. They don’t need to be house proud, they haven’t worked for what they have and have so much.

@derxa

Fuck I didn't know that shock such a waste of time and resources Because it probably didn't happen. You wouldn't saw off a handle.

@Billlius has provided some text which does confirm handles have been replaced on tools. It doesn't confirm they handles were replaced because they were plastic though. Because obviously that would be stupid.

derxa · 21/09/2021 11:04

@Billlius

Charles and his wooden handles. From The Garden at Highgrove by HRH PoW and Candida Lycett Green.
But you stated gaily that they sawed off plastic handles. That's not what the book extract says.
Grellbunt · 21/09/2021 11:04

@greenlynx

Yes, it’s fun for kids but I think he wouldn’t play it if he or his wife would be responsible for cleaning after. Just a thought.
Yeah exactly - the servants will have to clean it up

What an arse

elbea · 21/09/2021 11:04

@SandlakeRd do you know she didn’t clean up, I bet she did. Having worked for people like the royal family, some richer, they still do clean up after themselves.

Are they scrubbing their toilets - no, are they putting the plates in the dishwasher or putting toys away - yes.

Fluffypastelslippers · 21/09/2021 11:05

Perhaps nearly 40 years ago when the kids were wee, it was plastic bottles 🤷‍♀️ The drive for environmentalism is more recent and bottles would have been what was available at the time. Bit of a strange point. Sorry if you were joking and it's went over my head!

Or perhaps when it says tubes of mustard it means tubes of mustard and that poster is barking up a very wrong tree!

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 21/09/2021 11:05

@SandlakeRd

I thought exactly the same thing! They are so out of touch! It has made me really cross.

It is rather like Kate talking about all the fun art and baking during lockdown. She certainly wasn’t cleaning all that up either.

Oh get a life. Who says she wasn't the one sticking a vote of mixing bowls and spoons in the dishwasher?
AwaAnBileYerHeid · 21/09/2021 11:05

*sticking a couple

Dentistlakes · 21/09/2021 11:08

I thought it was an amusing story, but I did feel for the person who has to clean up the mess. Pretty certain it wouldn’t have been Prince Philip!

Yes. The OP is reaching quite far here. So sad. Anything to whip the RF with.
Hortibunda · 21/09/2021 11:08

Fine if they cleaned up after themselves.
Not fine if servants had to do it.

frazzledasarock · 21/09/2021 11:09

It says clearly, 'Plastic and metal handles have been banned from the gardens in favour of wood. Many of the tools have had their original handles removed .'

It's their in the text!

Fluffypastelslippers · 21/09/2021 11:10

@Hortibunda

I feel that your use of the word 'servant' to describe staff is worse than any stain on a ceiling.

Somanysocks · 21/09/2021 11:10

Goodness me, calm down people, of all the things going on today and you're all getting outraged at a family prank.

SusieBob · 21/09/2021 11:11

Meh, we already know the man was a bit of a twat so this story is not exactly news.

But you do have to laugh at the people trying to claim that the royals would have been the ones cleaning the mess up. Of course they fucking got one of the slaves help to do it.

Inastatus · 21/09/2021 11:11

@Wroxie

Is mustard in a tube something that only really posh people have?
It’s 85p a tube so I think even none posh people can afford it 😅
Prince Philip’s mustard prank
TheLovelinessOfDemons · 21/09/2021 11:11

@DobbyTheHouseElk

It was at a BBQ. So outside somewhere I’d imagine. Not in a palace. Probably on a canvas tent awning or something.

Sounds like a funny prank to play on his grandkids.

Where does it say it was at a barbecue? It says he enjoyed barbecuing, but "ceiling" suggests indoors.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/09/2021 11:12

What is the tube made out of?

Pure gold!

Hmm What do you think it was made out of?

Fluffypastelslippers · 21/09/2021 11:12

@frazzledasarock

It says clearly, 'Plastic and metal handles have been banned from the gardens in favour of wood. Many of the tools have had their original handles removed .'

It's their in the text!

Keep reading.....

The text DOES NOT say the handles were removed because they were plastic.

Fluffypastelslippers · 21/09/2021 11:14

@Wroxie

Is mustard in a tube something that only really posh people have?

No, it's a really normal way to buy mustard. Not unlike tomato purée. A tube.

EggSheeran · 21/09/2021 11:15

Mumsnet is becoming the new Twitter by the looks of things. People looking for something to be bitter about...just save time and say you aren't a Royalist and leave it at that.

It's simply grandchildren retelling stories from their childhood with their grandparents. I wish I had stories but I didn't have any grandparents. My Dad on the other hand used to do childish stuff with us all the time which I look back on fondly. Other people outside the family (like this OP) probably would have turned their nose up at it as being childish. Yes it was childish...because it was what entertained us...as children.

Here's a Biscuit for you OP, hoping it brings a bit more joy into your life.

Blossomtoes · 21/09/2021 11:16

@Billlius

I agree with you OP, someone’s got to clean all that lot up with ladders and special cleaning agents as it’s a Grade 1* building” and secondly, I thought Prince Philip was an environmentalist? You can’t squeeze a glass jar. That joke had to happen with a plastic bottle.Hmm
How on earth do you know it happened in a Grade 1* building? It happened with a tube of mustard 30 years ago. It’s exactly the sort of thing my dad, of the same vintage, would have done.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/09/2021 11:17

@Billlius

The Royal Family preach on and on about the environment and climate change while taking private jets etc etc. Prince Charles won’t have plastic at Highgrove. He makes the gardeners saw off any plastic handles on garden tools and refit them with wooden handles. It’s in the Highgrove book. So why do they have plastic bottles for mustard?
Presumably the plastic handles that have been sawn off then go into land fill?
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 21/09/2021 11:18

The fun sponges are out, I see.

SavoyCabbage · 21/09/2021 11:19

Maybe they buy powdered mustard for £3 which also comes in a metal tin and put it in reusable squeezable receptacles.

It reminds me of my Grandpa, he could be really immature and prankish! Bu I loved that he was still young at heart. I think with there generation because of the war they never got a youth.
