Prince Philip’s mustard prank

I don’t have any very strong feelings about the Royal family except to find it all a bit outdated but I found this story a real sign of how out of touch they are. The thought of my grandfather encouraging me to squirt mustard on to his ceiling! Since he a) wouldn’t have an army of cleaners to clear it up b) only had a small number of rooms to go in to and would not have wanted disgusting mustard all over the place c) didn’t have incredibly high ceilings where perhaps you wouldn’t have noticed.
I could understand if it was squirting mustard outside or maybe on clothes that could be washed but I found that story really jarring. They don’t need to be house proud, they haven’t worked for what they have and have so much.

Its true, they can't win and nor should they.

It's a saying, it's not meant literally about winning!
As in, doesn't matter what you do, there's always going to be someone finding fault/moaning etc.

Boilingicicle · 22/09/2021 22:05

Well at least it wasn’t racist unlike a lot of his jokes.

Fluffypastelslippers · 22/09/2021 22:40

@Hertsgirl10

Who has been raping kids?

Griselda1 · 22/09/2021 22:40

All families have odd little routines, many of which wouldn't be remotely amusing if they were repeated. He seemed to be a loving parent and grandparent.

DdraigGoch · 22/09/2021 22:42

@Dunrovi

It does smack of someone who's never had to touch a dishcloth or mop in his entire life!
That would be most men of his generation (and more recent ones) then.

What a load of fun sponges we have on this thread.

Yes I know that's what you meant. My point was, as long as there is a royal family it doesn't matter what they do, it'll always be wrong. They have no place in a democracy that pertains to support equality for all.

@Fluffypastelslippers lol let’s act silly.

You are the one acting silly.

'Lol' Hmm

Blinky21 · 22/09/2021 23:12

I met him once and saw him make one of his offensive jokes first hand, horrible out of touch person from a horrible out of touch family

StoneofDestiny · 22/09/2021 23:38

He would'nt care less about the mess being made as servants clear it all up and the public taxpayer pays for redecoration.

ponyexpress22 · 23/09/2021 00:10

He seemed to be a loving parent and grandparent.

We really don't know that. We only get snapshots of their lives. We see what they want us to see. We've no idea if he was a loving father or not.

simiisme · 23/09/2021 00:31

Wow... Miserable bunch of people on here.
I thought it was a funny and touching story of a naughty Grandad. Exactly the sort of thing my Dad did - he taught the babies to blow raspberries when they were eating their pureed dinners! And no, he didn't clear it up, either.

Pliudev · 23/09/2021 00:34

I don't care whether the mustard was in an environmentally unfriendly container. What it reminds me of is the sort of irresponsible behaviour the likes of the Bullingdon club indulge in. Smash up a few restaurants, rampage down the street, teach your grandkids to squirt mustard on the ceiling of a listed building. It's ok because no-one like you will ever have the job of cleaning up after you. And you can get away with it because of who you are. It's arrogant, entitled behaviour and I find it hard to understand those defending it. My grandad was a coal miner and would no sooner have considered teaching me to do such a thing than he would have armed me and taught me to slaughter wildlife. Us and them I suppose

MissTrip82 · 23/09/2021 01:00

Always wondered who the people were who think it’s fine to make a massive mess in a cafe and walk away.

Now we know. They’re so much fun! It’s fun to make a mess someone else will have to clean! Definitely not complete dicks.

I'm one of those saying that meh, seriously what is the problem but on the other hand would never make a mess when out and always clear up after ourselves!
So don't tar everyone with the same brush.
Also, I presume you know the family personally?
To know what they do and don't don't do, and how they feel towards staff for example.
I don't know them, but do see judging, sneering attitudes towards people who wouldn't do it themselves as well as those who do.
In other words, just attitude towards everyone without knowing the first bloody thing.

Quaggars · 23/09/2021 01:16

Whuh
Yes, coal mining is a legit profession (from a coal mining place myself)
Slaughtering animals though, that's being a butcher though and how are you differentiating the two - both are perfectly legit working class professions, just because you see one as being more worthy than the other doesn't make it any more so.
So maybe a bit more off your high horse?

Nomorefuckstogive · 23/09/2021 01:34

I totally agree, OP! Thought exactly the same when I heard the story. Glad it isn’t just me.

They absolutely are. Even the younger, supposedly ‘woke’ ones.

Agreed this is a morsel titbit to keep the conversation elsewhere and it’s clearly working on this thread.

WatchMyChops · 23/09/2021 04:46

Yes, he was out of touch. Not excusing his gaffes or his “jokes”, but his background, not to mention his upbringing, is very different to the majority of the wider public.

And yet I don’t feel the need to get angry about mustard on the ceilings Easter Confused It’s nice to know that they were able to have sort of fun in their dysfunctional upbringing with all that hierarchical nonsense.

Also, to the person claimed, somewhere up thread, that Kate didn’t clean up after herself just because she was baking etc during lockdown, how do you know she didn’t?

Of all things to froth about, this does not cut the mustard (pun intended Xmas Grin)

Nomorefuckstogive · 23/09/2021 05:08

@DarlingxYes,let’s divert attention from the sexual predator. They are all horrible, entitled spongers, but some are so much worse than others.

WatchMyChops · 23/09/2021 05:53

Err, this was literally in the article:

The light-hearted revelation is one of a number of poignant and amusing insights in the documentary, originally conceived as a personal portrait to mark Prince Philip's 100th birthday - with much of the footage shot before his death

So I don’t think it’s a ploy to distract the wider public from Andrew’s disgusting actions. It’s clearly something that was planned for a while Confused

gofg · 23/09/2021 06:01

Oh for goodness sake - some of you are seriously missing a sense of fun.

Hertsgirl10 · 23/09/2021 09:51

@Pliudev 😂😂😂😅😅 Are you taking the pee? Like is this genuinely what you think 😆

Realjournal123 · 23/09/2021 09:57

Oh for gods sake give it a rest. They live surprisingly simply compared to other royals around the world. It's just that they live in palaces. If he were spreading it on ornate ceilings but it wasn't, it was most likely to be in one of the numerous cottages on one of the estates. He was a very very decent man and did so much for our country so stop being small minded and troublemaking over a grandfather having a bit of fun with his grandchildren. You are a sad person if you've never done anything childish with children. Something they'll always remember. Some people just like to have a go at whatever they do. They do so much for Britain and we'd be a damn sight worse off without them.
