To be shocked by hygiene in a luxury resort

Hi. First time poster, so please go easy on me.

My 16 DD recently got a job housekeeping at a luxury golf hotel . She's 4 weekends in and has really had baptism of fire. Mostly vomit. , used condoms left on the side, dirty nappies left on the side, urine in the sink and bath. Friday night there was a wedding and 7 out of 50 rooms had vomit. What is wrong with people ? She doesn't have to clear it up because she's a minor . But she's a little traumatised by the state and smells she's had to deal with . On discussion, but they are told to use the old (used) pillowcase to dust the sides and the mirrors & to rinse the coffee cups with their hands in the sink, no fairy liquid , no sterilisation. 🤷‍♀️ no bleach is used in the bathroom and no anti viral spray around the room . Today she tested posted on lateral flow and awaiting PCR . I'm really shocked by these standards , from both management and guests ! Ffs dirty fxxkers !

We always wash any mugs glasses etc ourselves
Always use anti bac wipes on doors light switches bedsides remote controls etc
Did this before covid !!!
We now have also used anti back spray on soft furnishings.....although any cushions go straight off the bed !!!

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 06:52

I remember reading a tip about taking a zip lock sandwich bag to put the remote in to use.
And I really do wish hotels would get rid of cushions and throws, I always imagine them being covered in spunk 🤣🤣🤣

CovidCorvid · 20/09/2021 06:58

My mum always used to take a pack of anti bac wipes away with her and clean light switches, door handles, toilet flush, taps, remote control, loo seat. I’m beginning to think I may do the same!

Bluesheep8 · 20/09/2021 06:59

Please would someone give a better clue as to what CM stands for.

It's been said a couple of times upthread

MissMarpleRocks · 20/09/2021 07:04

Even pre covid I’d take antibacterial wipes & remove cushions & toppers. Always boil the kettle twice before I use it. It’s obvious to me that most staff don’t have time to clean properly between rooms.

Lovemusic33 · 20/09/2021 07:09

I worked in similar places as a teen, one was a posh hotel/restaurant, the rooms were often disgusting after a wedding or a big event as we’re to restaurants toilets. I’m someone who can’t deal with vomit, luckily it didn’t happen that often but bodily fluids were of plenty 🤮. I’m glad that I trained as a chef so after a year I was in the kitchen rather than cleaning but I always felt for those that had to clean up after a wedding.

PurpleFlower1983 · 20/09/2021 07:11

Can’t people just say they suspect it’s Celtic Manor? I stayed there with an ex years ago, stayed in the older part which was beautiful but the rooms were very dated at that point.

I stay in hotels fairly regularly and will definitely be taking my anti-bac wipes with me moving forward!!

TomAllenWife · 20/09/2021 07:23

@evilharpy @OverByYer I thought the same.
Over the years the Celtic Manor has become a joke.
Now they charge extortionate prices for standards lower than a travelodge.
I hate it

schnubbins · 20/09/2021 07:28

My son works in a Hotel and recently they had to have the room cleaned by Crime Scene Cleaners such was the mess left behind by the occupants ie blood , faeces vomit.
My brother is a Hotel Manager in the U.S and has in recent months had a terrible time.Ransacked rooms , domestic violence, shootings etc .He says that any sense of law and order has disappeared amongst many of their guests.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/09/2021 07:29

I remember years ago, there was a tv expose about the hotel trade a s the chambermaids had to do this. I never drink from or touch the Kellie or cups.

I always take my own bottle of water.

LizzieSiddal · 20/09/2021 07:30

I too take anti bac wipes to hotels and wipe all surfaces, TV remote and stitches/door handles. I also boil the kettle, to clean that out then boil I again and rinse out cups/tea spoons.

I can then relax Hmm

I've worked many hotel housekeeping jobs while living abroad for a few years when I was a bit younger.

Yes this sort of thing goes on in most. The housekeepers aren't cutting corners to be lazy and sit with their feet up. The amount of time you get to clean tons of room is ridiculous. You feel like you have to be superhuman most days. The hardest jobs physically I have ever done.

JessCat75 · 20/09/2021 07:39

@SallyOMalley

Looks like things haven't changed much since I was chambermaiding when I was in my teens - and that was 30 years ago.
Absolutely this, wipe down bathroom, rinse cups and glasses in bathroom sinks, only thing really clean were the washed sheets, some of the mattresses were disgusting, didn't stay long but learned a lot of lessons for future hotel stays.
10ColaBottles · 20/09/2021 07:43

I worked for holiday inn same age.

Same story with cleaning crockery etc.

Once did the honeymoon suite and there was jizz on the blanket. Told to leave it.

🤮

tintodeverano2 · 20/09/2021 07:50

And this is why I bring my own cup 🤮

EmKayEm · 20/09/2021 07:54

One of my first jobs was at a country pub that had B&B rooms.
Not cheap either.
The state they frequently got left in was a real eye-opener.

Condoms on the floor/side.
Wine stains on the bed.
Piss in the bin.
Shit in the shower (more than one occasion)
Sex toys and lube etc just left.

We used to watch the guests checking in and place bets on what depravity they might be responsible for...

wolfstarling · 20/09/2021 07:57

Sorry to be naive but what's wrong with the kettle? Are people pissing in them?

diddl · 20/09/2021 07:59

Just out of interest, are surfaces usually just damp dusted?

Time should be allowed for a decent clean, but if some people weren't so disgusting, the staff would have more time!

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 08:00

@wolfstarling

Sorry to be naive but what's wrong with the kettle? Are people pissing in them?
Probably ! I have read that people boil food in them, and boil underwear in them. I think it’s unlikely, but I’m not taking a chance !
BIoodyStupidJohnson · 20/09/2021 08:03

I did chambermaiding for a bit as a post-uni job. It was funny; some rooms were crime scenes and others looked like they’d just been on a photo shoot. Some guests are gross but others are really conscious about tidying after themselves.

But yeah we were targeted on number of rooms x time and if you failed that, you got fired. Even if the reason was that you were trying to clean thoroughly.

Also a lot of cleaning products we weren’t allowed to use because of the potential for a guest to have an allergic reaction to them. Old building with old pipes too, so no bleach for that reason.

darklindor · 20/09/2021 08:03

It's apparently the done thing among some young men to piss in kettles........and worse.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/09/2021 08:05

worked for an organisation that ran a hotel - the hotel manager was very specific when we changed laundry companies that we had our own "ring fenced" laundry - because it's standard for hotels to use towels and linen as cleaning clothes apparently.
So no, not surprised.
The hotel can't really be accountable for the state the guests leave the rooms in

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 20/09/2021 08:07

Oh and just for balance, the worst states were usually the hen party rooms. Found a dead seagull in the bed once.

Oh and another time, an unconscious male stripper who’d been rohypnoled.
