To be shocked by hygiene in a luxury resort

Hi. First time poster, so please go easy on me.

My 16 DD recently got a job housekeeping at a luxury golf hotel . She's 4 weekends in and has really had baptism of fire. Mostly vomit. , used condoms left on the side, dirty nappies left on the side, urine in the sink and bath. Friday night there was a wedding and 7 out of 50 rooms had vomit. What is wrong with people ? She doesn't have to clear it up because she's a minor . But she's a little traumatised by the state and smells she's had to deal with . On discussion, but they are told to use the old (used) pillowcase to dust the sides and the mirrors & to rinse the coffee cups with their hands in the sink, no fairy liquid , no sterilisation. 🤷‍♀️ no bleach is used in the bathroom and no anti viral spray around the room . Today she tested posted on lateral flow and awaiting PCR . I'm really shocked by these standards , from both management and guests ! Ffs dirty fxxkers !

Sounds about right - when I was a chambermaid as a student we just made sure things looked clean. Mainly by using the towels from the outgoing guests to wipe bathroom and room over. And any pillows that looked unused (ie under the top pillow) wouldn't be changed.
I always bring antic wipes when we travel and wipe all surfaces down before using any hotel room (whatever star rating).

I worked in a luxury resort in Australia popular with honeymooning Japanese couples (very high end). The bed sheets etc were changed but the bedspread never was. Dread to think what was on them unseen.
Best one I worked in was a German luxury ski resort (£1000 a night level luxury - 20odd years ago) where the management and guests were mostly pretty good and as a chambermaid you were actually (just about) given enough time to do a proper clean. But to be honest not much would surprise me, I've worked in a good few places (handy backpacking job) and the general motto seems to be what you don't see you don't know about. For me hotels have little appeal, they don't have much of a veneer of luxury to me, I know too much. 🤫

I wish I never read this thread Envy

@evilharpy

Does it have the initials CM?
I thought the same. People think it’s posh, I think it’s rough.
Blankspace4 · 19/09/2021 22:20

Oh god, I’m thoroughly disgusted by this thread. Using prior guests dirty towels to clean with? How is that even allowed in this day and age? Absolutely rank.

smoocakes6 · 19/09/2021 22:22

Thanks for your replies. I really needed to speak to someone about it and rant off & get some perspective 🤯😊 she doesn't have to work there . She was just proud of herself for getting a job and earning her own money ❤️ and feeling independent. Its the balance of teaching them good work ethics/ not putting up with shit . I'm probably overthinking it 🙄

@mrsed1987

I worked in a hotel chain begining with H when I was 16 (about 19 years ago) and that's pretty much how I was told to clean the rooms 🤢
Hilton? Holiday Inn?

Why the mystery? They're not going to hunt you down after 19 years.

beautifullymad · 19/09/2021 22:26

@SallyOMalley

Looks like things haven't changed much since I was chambermaiding when I was in my teens - and that was 30 years ago.
I was 38 years ago and I agree. Shockingly nothing has changed.

I take alcohol in a spray bottle and sanitise everything I'll be in contact with. Taps, light switches, remote controls, shower controls, toilet seat. I boil the kettle and sanitise the cups and spoons.
Never sit without underwear on the throws or seats.

It's all top tidied without proper cleaning.

InTheMiddle23 · 19/09/2021 22:27

What do you mean by 'not putting up with shit'?

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 19/09/2021 22:29

She could take a similar approach to what I did which was to take my own higher standards to work with me and do a hygienic job even though I was only expected to make it look OK. It meant I had to work my tail off to do it in the time I had but at least I could leave it ready for the next guest and still be able to look them in the eye and keep my self worth. But if rather work hard and not lower myself to that level. You don't have to sell your soul. The only thing I couldn't influence was the bedspread in the Ozzy resort as the laundry room would literally reject them if I took them in unless I could point out an obvious 'issue'. My mum would have been proud of me though. Sadly you can't do much about ghastly guests.

baffledcoconut · 19/09/2021 22:30

And this is why I hate hotels.

I think I know where you mean. It’s not what it’s made out to be. Nowhere near.

JazzyBBG · 19/09/2021 22:32

I wonder are they doing the thing right now where they seal the rooms to say the room has been "sanitised"

If you genuinely believe it is not being as it should be then report to environmental health?

JazzyBBG · 19/09/2021 22:32

@evilharpy oh no don't say that we were looking at CM!!

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 19/09/2021 22:37

My friends are dragging me to an overnight in a spa hotel as a girls treat after our enforced seperation over pandemic. I'm pretending I'm as enthusiastic as they are as they are all desperate to do it, I'd be the only misery saying let's not, and none of the things I'd rather do is anything they'd be interested in (sounds like we're a really bad friends match, we're not). I'll put a good face on it but I'll be glad when it's over, though thankfully the company makes it worth it. Ah, you can't unknow some stuff.

earthyfire · 19/09/2021 22:39

Doesn't surprise me. I never use kettles, cups or glasses in hotel rooms and as soon as I get into the room I whip off any cushions or throws that are on the bed because it's obvious they don't get washed. I usually strip the beds/pillowcases before I leave so I know they get will get changed for the next person staying in the room.

Clymene · 19/09/2021 22:39

Having worked in a hotel I strip the cover and cushions off and chuck them in the corner as soon as I go into the room.

I never walk around in them barefoot either. We never washed the floors, just wiped them with dirty towels.

And I always wash all the cups and glasses with soap before using them. Having a little plastic bag over them doesn't mean they're clean.

And I tear off that folded into a triangle sheet of loo paper/tissue and put them in the bin too.

The sheets and towels are clean but that's about it.

justasking111 · 19/09/2021 22:40

Having observed hospital cleaners in shock at their lack of knowledge of cleaning I am not surprised.

In defence of chambermaids they work bloody hard but have so little time allocated to each room

SerendipitousEmma · 19/09/2021 22:42

@OverByYer @evilharpy I was there this weekend. Luxury it is not!! Shabby and dirty and incredibly overpriced.

On a Sunday, when people didn't check out until later sometimes you'd get 4 hours to clean 30 rooms. You really don't have time to do much more than chance the sheets and wipe sown surfaces
Ledkr · 19/09/2021 22:49

God I thought it was just the hotels I had worked in years ago that did this.
Vile to think its pretty standard.
This is why I prefer my camper van cos its just our own dirt.

LondonLife3 · 19/09/2021 22:54

If it’s the CM I’m thinking about in wales, it’s sooo overpriced and always looks like it needs a good clean.. Hmm can’t believe they charge £200 a night for a basic room!

carlywurly · 19/09/2021 22:54

Bloody hell, we do Airbnb and everything is cleaned properly and sanitised. Wouldn't dream of using old towels to clean. That's absolutely grim.

Queenie6655 · 19/09/2021 22:54

Awful

I worked in a grim hotel decades ago and that's what happened there too

Surprised this can still happen

Stayed in a well known chain last night
This morning the house keeper was washing the floor of the lift with a handtowel it was filthy !!!

She was so stressed
Sadly I assume many staff cleaning rooms don't have the time to do it properly

InTheMiddle23 · 19/09/2021 22:59

If you go to hotels and repeatedly call requesting early check in / late check out remember there are hundreds of others doing the same, putting more pressure on housekeeping teams.
