To despise those that voted for Brexit when I’m doing my weekly shop

So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

Plus side....Finally workplaces are not able to get cheap imported labour and are actually having to pay people a living wage to attract applicants. I guess all the time you were able to get someone working for peanuts it didn't bother you as long as your daily routine was not affected you can ignore the fact of sub standard conditions and pay for many workers.

ineedsun · 19/09/2021 13:58

@Embroidery

There's plenty here. I think its lorry drivers and covid rather than brexit.
It’s a combination, Brexit is absolutely a contributory factor, it’s also affecting healthcare, they can barely staff care homes round here at the moment because a number of agency staff have had to go back to their home country.
girlmom21 · 19/09/2021 13:59

@FairfaxAikman

Our microwave packed up. We bought it six years ago for about £80. The same model is now £120. We struggled to get a decent one for £80.
I bought a £30 microwave from Asda 6 years ago and have never had an issue...
checkedcloth · 19/09/2021 13:59

@Ilovegreentomatoes I sound like a spoilt entitled brat do I?

When you’re working 50 hours plus, front line NHS, hardly seeing your kids then maybe you might feel so strongly about making sure they and you have the things that you need to make the week go smoothly - including stuff they like for packed lunch.

Forgive me that I’ve not trained my kids to love to love scraps instead. Been a bit busy caring for people with covid.

If that makes me a brat then happy to be one

@tobedtoMNandfart

No salmon & sparkling water. Good lord what is the world coming to 🤣
No scotch eggs round here 😳 riots the lot. Husband is gutted
Hillary17 · 19/09/2021 14:00

Whoever said it’s not an issue in the North West is lying. It is. The shelves have less and less on them, especially meat and fresh produce. It doesn’t bother me too much, we can afford to upgrade. But for anyone on a budget, it must be turning into a nightmare to plan. It’s the poor I feel for, they’ll be worse off because of peoples weird patriotic ego!

Gwenhwyfar · 19/09/2021 14:00

@Hont1986

I honestly think that in twenty years time, being a Leaver now is going to be looked on as a badge of shame.
As it was very much an older vote, I think many Leave voters will claim they actually voted Remain and it's the ones now deceased who gave us Brexit.
ineedsun · 19/09/2021 14:00

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

I've never heard anything so disgusting and utterly entitled in my life. I've just been to Lidl and done a big weekly possibly 2 weekly shop for £22. I bought everything I needed all of the basics. So a few shelves were empty but Im not sleeping on the street or starving like so many people in the world.
Seriously? You’ve either lived a very sheltered life or you’re being over dramatic
MarleneDietrichsSmile · 19/09/2021 14:00

I am a remainer and European to boot, but I just don’t get the panic or the anger

People complaining bitterly over lack of tonic water, limoncello (only on MN… Grin), salmon, ready meals and sparkling water are to me like those who complained all summer about not being able to go on holiday to their favourite all inclusive resorts…. You don’t know you were born

Goodmorninglights · 19/09/2021 14:00

So many posters coming on to let us know they’re ok. Why? It’s like me saying I’ve broken my ankle and you replying when I last looked, mine was fine. Can’t you see how ridiculous you’re being? Childlike really. And truthseeker you’re the same, your partner’s settled status application went through fine so everyone else must be, for some reason, making it up?
Open your eyes people, you’ve been conned, the masses voted for what bumbling Boris supported because they thought him a decent chap, and there were so many closet xenophobes delightedly sending their bigoted thoughts could be supported. How else can you explain the rise in race hating crime following the referendum.

But sadly this will fall on deaf ears, or ears that don’t want to admit how they feel. So let’s all just carry on with how lucky we are to still have food, big up the wartime spirit to make ourselves feel better, and I’ll wait another month for my blood tests for cancer symptoms.

Nonbio46 · 19/09/2021 14:00

That’s one of the many reasons to despise Brexit voters in my opinion. 😡

Gwenhwyfar · 19/09/2021 14:01

"I think its lorry drivers and covid rather than brexit."

the lorry driver shortage is because of Brexit.

JemimaMuddledUp · 19/09/2021 14:01

This has shifted me even further towards buying locally to avoid the shortages. I buy a lot more from the farmers market etc - local, in season vegetables and locally reared meat. I guess this is probably a good thing, low food miles plus supporting local businesses etc.

But I very much appreciate that I'm in a privileged position to be able to afford to do this. Also it is great in September when there is an abundance of local fruit and veg, it will be pretty depressing in February and March when I'm wondering what to do with yet another bunch of kale.

I voted Remain btw.

seaandsandcastles · 19/09/2021 14:01

Despise me all you want Grin It’s the best outcome for our country and you’ll see that eventually.

FreedomFaith · 19/09/2021 14:02

That's not the point, we were promised sunlit uplands outside the EU, £350 mill a week for the NHS not less choice, higher food prices and higher taxes.

If anyone actually believed that, they are just stupid.

Arthurianna · 19/09/2021 14:02

I usually shop at a small local supermarket. They have always been a bit erratic with stock levels, but aren't noticeably worse now.

Today I went to the big name supermarket in the next town to stock up on various things that I can't get in my little local shop, or that cost a fortune in there, and to buy groceries for the week.
Signs all over the shelves apologising for shortages, and I couldn't get lots of the things I went for.
Will stick to my local shop now - yes I have to pay nearly four pounds for a box of weetabix, but I don't have to make so many alterations to my meal plan on the hop!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 19/09/2021 14:02

@BabbleBee

NHS nurse too. A couple of weeks ago we were told to ration our needles as supplies are dwindling. Now it’s blood bottles, urgent cases only.
We got told especially with our COVID patients to use the blood gas machines. The setting can be changed apparently to measure different bloods levels . A VBG result comes quicker.
gibletjane · 19/09/2021 14:03

This is a good thing but the problem is we have a high tax burden, the taxes are not going to the right place, an ageing population & ridiculous housing costs. It's going to be painful.

Well saying you despise people because you can't get any tonic water is maybe a bit OTT. It's hardly digging in the bins to feed your kids is it?

nimbuscloud · 19/09/2021 14:03

The C02 shortage is going to be catastrophic if that is not resolved ASAP

ZoBo123 · 19/09/2021 14:04

No shortages here (Peterborough). I used to work in supermarket supply and quite often this time of year there would be shortages due to changing seasons from summer to winter. You may have noticed the layouts changing to make more space for winter and Christmas ranges, these will be being distributed now. My local supermarket has advent calendars and mince pies. Christmas quarter (October to December) sees almost half of the turnover of most major stores, in those three months it takes a lot to get the stock levels up to that.

Go on then: tell us some real, tangible, actual benefits. Not just vague promises of things like 'freedom'. We have so much less freedom than we did before the leave vote so that won't wash.
Chloemol · 19/09/2021 14:05

@checkedcloth

Actually i despise those like you op, and the rest of the Brexit haters on MN who are incapable of understanding people are capable of making up their own minds on something, but because it’s a different viewpoint to you they must be racist, thick, didn’t know what they were doing, only want blue passports and the rest of the crap leavers come out with..

And if anything goes wrong it must absolutely be laid at the doors of Brexit

Change the record,

Eve · 19/09/2021 14:05

@BluebellsGreenbells

It is a pretty crap situation for gluten-free stuff, a lot of which comes from Europe, especially pasta, or Germany. Lots of unavailable items, and since a lot of gluten-free food is poor, once you find something that is acceptable, it is hard when it just stops being able to get here

Well there’s a business opportunity for some you entrepreneurs! Keep the money in Britain and employ British workers rather than send the money to Germany (in this instance!)

UK needs to be self sufficient and things will change it’s not all scare mongering

Typical Brexiter response - where exactly do you think the majority of the ingredients for gluten free food comes from?

And the machinery to make all this food? And the people with skills to make it?
