To despise those that voted for Brexit when I’m doing my weekly shop

So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

There are recent food price rises in Spain caused by the hike in electricity prices there.

vera99 · 19/09/2021 20:31

For some, their lives were shit so they voted Brexit as a big fuck you to the establishment and middle classes that didn't hear their inchoate rage. I get that and part of it's continuing support as things gets shittier is seeing entitled middle classes getting their apple carts upset and raging about fizzy water and not being able to get a nanny. Jealousy is a hugely powerful emotion. Johnson and his cohorts know this and are playing a blinder at continuing their support.

Kendodd · 19/09/2021 20:33

It's a good point, but people rarely like to admit they were duped or got it wrong

The psychology around it is really interesting. As I said, I'd be fucking furious. Imagine you bought a house, after the sale, loads of issues became apparent that the seller said weren't a problem, you'd be angry. You wouldn't talk about how great the house and seller was.

Are there food shortages and supply chain issues as well?

Dutchesss · 19/09/2021 20:34

Every single frozen item is out of stock for my online shop. Every single one. Although there seems to be plenty of food just lack of choice. I wanted a frozen pie but ended up making my own. I miss the good old days.

Surely it's those with the least who'll be hit the hardest by the price rises. As shortages go up so will prices. It really is absolute stupidity at the levels of Baldrick.

Theoldprospector · 19/09/2021 20:36

I am in the North and haven’t noticed any shortages.

I don’t know how far any changes are to do with Brexit, but surely the point of Brexit is to create long term independence, self sufficiency and stability. We we were never going to get that within the first couple of years. We aren’t going to know the real outcome of it for about twenty years.

Nothing reported, and judging by how much the Spanish press has reported the electricity prices (daily updates alongside COVID case numbers) they’d definitely have noted stock shortages

How will it be better than what we had? Even without the 20 years of misery to get to that point?
purplesequins · 19/09/2021 20:38

the uk has not been self sufficient in food for more than 150 years.

Kendodd · 19/09/2021 20:40

Maybe a better analogy would be -
You find a house you want to buy.
Surveyor says house is full of damp.
Seller says it isn't, project fear.
Buyer believes seller, buy house and moves in.
House is cold, damp and stinks.
Buyer says its lovely, best house ever and seller honest.

Figgygal · 19/09/2021 20:42

Don’t hate those who were fooled hate who fooled them
But yes my online shop is pretty bloody impossible this week and in local Tesco express today no fresh meat anywhere

Theoldprospector · 19/09/2021 20:42

It isn’t about it being better than what we had, or twenty years of misery. It could go amazingly well and then badly.

The point is that it is a massive political change in an increasingly unstable world. We don’t know have the U.K. or the EU are going to do through climate change, mass movements of people and political instability.

Whatever happens, whether we left or not, life was not going to continue the way it did forever, anymore than we could stay in the fifties forever.

To be fair to Jacob Rees-Mogg (can’t believe I’m saying that) he said this all along, that there would be 15-20 years of pain before we reach the sunlit uplands. He was the only arch Brexiteer who told the truth, but nobody really listened or understood what he was saying. Disclaimer- I’m a remainer and a federalist, so absolutely no skin in his game.
FourTeaFallOut · 19/09/2021 20:43

No. I wasn't suggesting that there was, just pointing out the cause of the recent increases.

I could smash up my TV with a hammer and then just shrug and say 'ah well, nothing stays the same forever.'

MsJinks · 19/09/2021 20:44

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead

But the point that I still don’t understand is what part of the better with Brexit it is to have less choice and availability of food?

That'll be less immigration. Well I guess that's true, and isn't it working brilliantly ?
More money for the NHS 😂
Control over our borders 😂
Won't be told what to do by the EU 😂

I did read the other day that greengrocers will soon be allowed to weigh in lbs and oz again. Well thank fuck for that, it's worth having no food to buy, as long as the turnips on the shelf can be weighed in imperial..

Less EU migration- the very sector of migration that clearly paid more in per head than the British do - but I think we’re solving that with non EU freedom of movement with countries full of potential migrants who will probably take the lower wage - so that nice story of worrying about migrants’ pay probably won’t have such a happy ending, though I’m sure we can change the narrative yet again 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m not sure why no one asks Johnson where that 350 mill has gone - especially in light of the NI hike - I expect there’s a very valid reason for this that I’ve overlooked but no one yet has told me where it has gone 🤷🏼‍♀️ We were always allowed to weigh in lb and Oz but needed metric alongside - another ‘misunderstanding’ of some vote leave campaigners - and those who are welcoming imperial back and hoping metric goes please remember timesing and dividing by 10 is easier for the school kids - and me! But hey we all get to buy a lb of whatever is left on the shelves, and a blue passport for the display cabinet as there will be nowhere much to take it out - this clearly outweighs making sure our vulnerable are fed and cared for at least most days.
Daphnise · 19/09/2021 20:48

Sorry that the OP does not have enough to eat due in OP's view to Brexit.
Also that gas prices are going up because of Brexit.
And that the NHS is declining due to Brexit.
And the days are getting shorter and cooler due to Brexit.

If only people knew what they had voted for.

mustlovegin · 19/09/2021 20:49

I work in a supermarket over night and I can assure you there's enough bloody food & availability

Don't let reality get in the way of a good moan

Clavinova · 19/09/2021 20:49

Nothing reported, and judging by how much the Spanish press has reported the electricity prices (daily updates alongside COVID case numbers)

How did the protest go?

Activists affiliated with the Communist Party Workers of Spain (PCTE) are protesting in cities around the country Sept.14 to denounce rising electricity costs. The following locations have been announced: Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cordoba, Donostia, Leon, Malaga, Salamanca, Santander, Seville, Valladolid.

Theoldprospector · 19/09/2021 20:50

‘What is it about then? Change for change’s sake?’

I assumed it was about people being concerned about the level of instability and challenges the EU faced and whether there was a greater threat from staying or going.

But it can’t be, because we had power to change the direction of Europe, while still keeping the benefits being in that partnership brought. Absolutely nobody would think ‘hmmm, what’s the better option here?’ and vote for Brexit. We gain nothing, we lose loads and we have to go through twenty years of grief to see any balance at all, which still will never be as good as we had.
JosephineDeBeauharnais · 19/09/2021 20:53

Blue passports
Pounds and ounces
Pounds shillings and pennies
How many people really care about this stuff? I mean care to the point where it influences their vote? Who is Boris talking to with these messages? He knows (because civil servants will have told him) that he can’t abandon metric weights and measures, he can’t change the currency (I mean WTAF?) and the colour of the passport is neither here nor there.
He’s fiddling while we burn and he knows it. He’s the ultimate troll.

PersephoneJames · 19/09/2021 20:53

What has that got to do with me, Brexit or whether there is food in supermarkets Clav?
