So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

Yes I said upthread Brexit has accelerated this but it was coming regardless.

Stormyseasallround · 19/09/2021 16:06

@BobsBurgersisthebest

I work in a supermarket over night and I can assure you there's enough bloody food & availability. What is everyone going on about "I can't get bagels" Make your own bagels! There are many many different brands of the same product, just buy a different one. Yikes.
So back to ‘stop whinging about your broken leg - hop everywhere!’? Yes we can make bagels; yes we’re entitled to be irritated that they’re not on the shelves because of Brexit.
Fizzysalmon · 19/09/2021 16:08

So because for years we have had a shitty system relying on cheap wages, cheap labour from abroad, zero hour contracts etc, and squeezing profits for farmers etc in pursuit of cheap food people are upset we can no longer exploit people to do that? Yes really gutted about that, boo hoo.

Moonface123 · 19/09/2021 16:09

This is exactly why so many people are experiencing poor mental health.
If l couldn't get salmon, l would just buy tuna. Simp!e.
If you are unable to make slight adjustments in a situation like this, God help you when something serious happens.
This forum has an underlying current of constant negativity. If you want to study human nature look on here. Tells you everything you need to know.

And now we still have low wages, zero hour contracts, and squeezed farmers but ALSO no salmon or bagels. Hurrah!! We’ve won!!
FourTeaFallOut · 19/09/2021 16:10

Lots of problems we have here are not first world problems. Malnourished people- exists across the world, including here. Poor housing exists across the world, including here. Not being able to access medicine in a timely manner, exists across the world, including here at times. Not being able to access the education you need to get a job, exists across the world, including here for some people.

Having the luxury to complain that you have to walk to another shop to buy the food you'd like...first world problems

MsJinks · 19/09/2021 16:11

I live in Yorkshire, and whilst I can feed myself fine, there are shortages - my current issue is finding my mum’s chilled ready meals, as that’s what she needs to be fed by her carers - the reduction has been noticeable for a few weeks and trying Sainsbury’s this week there was a notice about them not being able to get them. Fortunately, my mum voted to leave so I’m sure she will understand, or give me another reason I have to make her tea. There’s many elderly rely on these though - it’s not acceptable to ignore what’s happening or say they’re ok as it’s worse in Syria or something else stupid.
Yes, there are ways round it, but we were promised better, then the same - now what is the bloody excuse? You don’t notice in the shops maybe, until it’s something you particularly want or need, but it’s getting more and more obvious that more and more people are starting to have to change their shopping, planning and eating habits - which is not what was promised. Personally I’m coeliac so use the free from ranges, which are also reducing in ranges and availability- these ranges are fairly vital for some and a massive pita to change.
Less choice, more cost, inconvenience plus petrol rises when fetching what’s left - I’d have more respect if it were at least acknowledged and a plan/expectations laid out by the government- I’ve given up on most leave voters acknowledging it.

I never understood why anyone voted for Brexit in the first place, hope they are happy with themselves now

I’m not unable to make adjustments. I don’t lie in bed at night crying about the lack of salmon. But I’m not putting out the flags because things I used to be able to buy are now unavailable.

What happens when you can’t buy salmon or tuna? Or bread? Or milk?
Mancity100 · 19/09/2021 16:12

Just been on my sainsbury's account and I can get various types of tonic water and salmon

GlobalForce · 19/09/2021 16:12

I can understand people not being happy about access to food as I do know that some of it is Brexit related.

I can understand people being unhappy at being exploited on zero hours contracts.

I don't understand why people keep beinging up global glass shortages and blaming people who voted Brexit, glass shortages are a glovlbal problem and many people have linkes to many articles, yet still there is anger at a lack of NHS blood tests at people who voted Brexit, it's getting a bit Salem.

I can't understand why people keep blaming

SusieBob · 19/09/2021 16:13

@FourTeaFallOut

Don’t you think it would be sensible to look at minor, relatively unimportant shortages like this and see what’s causing them so we can prevent it extending to more important goods though?

Yes absolutely. But, I maintain, having to walk to a different shop is a first world problem.

People, presumably, voted for Brexit because they thought it would make living in the UK better. Let's ignore the fact that not one person could actually say how.

The fact is, those of us who bought into "project fear" aka "project reality" have been vinidicated but unfortunately we are stuck with this shitshow.

Yes, it's a "first world problem" but as others have said we live in the first world. We should still be striving for a better country rather than listening to cunts like Farage and Boris. The fact that those two pricks supported brexit should have been enough to make any sane person run a fucking mile if nothing else.

Skippingabeat · 19/09/2021 16:13
@Cactu you misunderstood I didn't vote for Brexit but I do think compared to many counties we are spoiled in the variety of food & cost of it.
I'm from a country where the current availability and cost of food is one of the worst in the world.
Please stop saying you're better than the bottom of the barrel or you'll end there.

But how does Brexit help? All of that could have been dealt with in the EU if our government cared…now we have added trade problems on top of all that. Farmers used to get subsidies which helped. Not any more.

Ah but they are. Malnourishment here can be dealt with from food banks, prescriptions from the NHS, free school dinners etc etc etc. All of which are shit and unacceptable, but nowhere near as grim and unsolvable as they are in the third world.
Mancity100 · 19/09/2021 16:13

Get vegan milk lasts longer and better for the planet and eat something else apart from bread

Fizzysalmon · 19/09/2021 16:14

Companies will have to adapt if they want custom won't they. There's 4 supermarkets within 5 minutes of eachother here, all sell much of the same, all chuck loads at the end of the day, it's greed of these companies to need to have a presence everywhere as God forbid one of the others has their share of business. I mean you can buy 8 chicken thighs for £1.79- that's the thighs of 4 chickens and the packaging plus logistics; who is getting paid fairly in that chain? No one, its disgusting really.

What happens when you can’t get any oat or nut milk or flour?
HalzTangz · 19/09/2021 16:15

@gibletjane

Well i'm not a fan of Brexit but my shelves have only been short of certain items eg I want bagels but they only have wraps or rolls. We still have a shit load of choice, I think we are quite spoiled tbh.
You're lucky then. I have just returned from my weekly hop, literally half my list wasn't available. I had to stand out of the way whilst I recalulated the meal plans and hunted for stuff I could substitute items with. I wasn't even trying to make fancy or complicated things. I could get chicken, pork, eggs, sugar, self raising floor, orange juice, mango juice, broccoli, sweet corn, white bread or milk
Fizzysalmon · 19/09/2021 16:15

Ah yes the farmers subsidies lmao

The point being, of course, is that it's not "just salmon".

For the first time since WW2 the government have had to create a taskforce in order to ensure the UK has a secure food supply. If that doesn't make you go "er, hang on a sec, that's a bit fucking worrying" then I don't know what is.

Well whoop-dee-do for you. You accept the general industry assessment that supply chains are affected and that there are shortages which will get worse, though, don’t you?

Go on…what’s funny about them?
GlobalForce · 19/09/2021 16:16

California producers have struggled with almonds this year, another global shortage to come.
