To despise those that voted for Brexit when I’m doing my weekly shop

So little stock on the shelves. Makes the weekly shop a complete nightmare as you just cannot meal plan anymore.

I didn’t vote for this absolute shit storm.

@Notthemessiah

Any normal country has salmon and sparkling water in the supermarkets. It's unacceptable that we don't.

Fuck me, is fizzy water now a human right or something. God forbid we have to drink water without bubbles in it, straight out of the tap like some kind of animal.

It is not the point that it might be ‘luxury’ items right now. Haulage and retail experts say it will get worse. And even if it never does, Brexit has delivered a worsening in choice. What advantages have there been to counteract this? I mean, they only need to be small advantages if it’s just the lack of sparking water, right? You can do it…tell me one.
Lonelycrab · 19/09/2021 15:21

Not everyone was living a fantastic life before. And their issues must have been the reasons why they voted Brexit

Most of our press have been rabidly anti EU for decades. And also pro- Tory. See the DM, Telegraph and Sun- the bulk of our newspaper sales in this country. It’s blame shifting, pure and simple. The EU isn’t perfect but it’s far from the source of all our ills. But people began to think it was. Well, let’s see how mightily we flourish then eh? Not looking good so far.

I agree with you, Northemessiah. Tap water is good enough for me too, I drink loads of it.

I'm surprised that salmon is scarce though. I daresay it's because of transport difficulties at the moment, fishermen/woman will be working.

I've had salmon in a meal delivered to me by Ubereats and deliveroo a few times, yum, but I expect the restaurant has some in the freezer.
@tobedtoMNandfart because people who don't nod along to the "Brexit is all great" narrative are frustrated that the many many downsides are not balanced by ANY tangible benefit and that those who voted for and supported this seem reluctant to admit is not all "sunlit uplands"and take any responsibility for their decision.
Absolutely. Some humility would go a long way, a “yeah we fucked that up, sorry.” Instead they go on the attack because we have the sheer audacity to object to things being worse.

Who said it was a human right?

As a PP said, what you (because your stance on this makes it pretty clear what you voted for) have done is voted for a worse life for all of us. Well done.
Does it feel good? Did we make Britain Great again? Are we happy with our actions?

Notthemessiah · 19/09/2021 15:22

Nobody is saying that we’ll die without it, but is was nice to have it and now we don’t for a few days

Fixed that for you. It's hardly the end of days if your water doesn't have bubbles in for 72 hours is it.

Nobody is saying it’s the end of days. We’re saying that it’s one small way in which things are worse. Please do tell us one small improvement which has offset this.
cardibach · 19/09/2021 15:25

@Notthemessiah what makes you think it’ll only be for a few days? Or that it’ll only be luxury items affected?

Mancity100 · 19/09/2021 15:27

@Amazonmulu

I went to three supermarkets in Leeds to find tonic water. Yes totally first world problems. But also not an unreasonable ask.
Should have gone to morrisons has everything
SilverGlitterBaubles · 19/09/2021 15:28

What's most frustrating and alarming is the refusal for anyone in government to acknowledge that there are serious issues. The dagger look Priti Patel gave the Tory MP who dared mention it. It's emperors new clothes stuff we can all see it but we mustn't speak for fear of upsetting the king.

vera99 · 19/09/2021 15:28

Cornwall got £100 mill from the EU regional fund and now they are begging the tories for £3million and their fisherman well and truly fucked. Same in all the deprived red wall areas.

Oh and for the but but but vaccine brigade nine EU countries, including Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France, Belgium and Italy, have now administered one or both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine to a larger share of their populations than the UK, with a further five having overtaken the US.

Stupid is as stupid does.

@frazzledali

Is it entitled to want to have vital blood tests?
Of course it isn't. But the shortage isn't because of Brexit.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/09/2021 15:29

The only thing I haven’t been able to find lately was block Stork, for making pastry, but apparently it was due in later the same day.
No empty shelves at all around here.

I dare say that because of scaremongering, there’s been panic buying in some areas, same as at the beginning of Lockdown One. I just hope any panic buyers don’t end up chucking much of their fresh food hoard, as apparently happened then. I despise people who wantonly waste food, not to mention those who selfishly strip shelves in the first place.

FuckinGoddess · 19/09/2021 15:30

Ahhh, so in addition to all the shit things about Brexit, we’re now supposed to be eating turnips and casserole, I mean why would anyone want salmon if you can eat bangers and mash, the proper British way?! 😕

Race to the bottom, but oh well, what can you do...

Notthemessiah · 19/09/2021 15:30
@Notthemessiah what makes you think it’ll only be for a few days? Or that it’ll only be luxury items affected?
What makes you think it won't?

90% of the stuff in shops we don't actually need. When we actually start running out of stuff we do need (and properly run out, not just not be able to get them for 48hrs) then maybe I'll start OTT threads on Mumsnet too. Until then I think I'll try not to despise 52% of the voting population thanks, because that helps exactly nobody.

DamnUserName21 · 19/09/2021 15:30

People don't have to apologise to others for how they voted, fgs. At the moment there are labour and shortages but this is not UK specific. And it really is hard to quantify how much is Brexit related and how much is Covid amongst everything else going on: rising energy prices, etc.

H works fairly high up for a large food retailer. Panic buying isn’t the issue - deliveries aren’t making it through to stock the shelves in the first place.
wildmountaintime · 19/09/2021 15:32

Yes there are random shortages here, and things are much more expensive, just basic foods not fancy stuff.

I'm on Universal Credit (disabled but only classed as LCW so no 'extra' payments) and I am scared yes. My food bill keeps going up and I'll have no leeway in my budget soon.

That assumes that Brexit is responsible for it, when it's only one of a number of factors. Personally, I think that forcing companies to increast the wages for British HGV drivers is a positive though.

Mancity100 · 19/09/2021 15:33

Of course it's the same , hate is bloody hate

It's bloody vile what been said on here , towards people who voted brexit

It is, partly. Obviously it is also due to increased demand because of the pandemic but this is being compounded by supply chain issues.

There are no reported food shortages in the EU. There very definitely are here. And yet of course it’s not Brexit to blame hahaha. And yes, apologising for doing something to worsen the lives of other people would be the decent thing to do.

Even if someone did want to show some humility and they certainly don't have to, do you think being called ignorant, racist, gammon, Tory voting cunts is going to incite such an act?

Wages have been increased by some companies in order to poach drivers from other companies, moving the shortages over to their businesses. Great for individual drivers; of no benefit to the rest of us.
