Haven't seen the OP around, thread 1 is about to run out and someone asked for a new thread.

The average Brit probably couldn’t name the HoS of China either. That’s no indication of their role/importance in the world.

And to stave off the inevitable diversionary comebacks, I’m not for a second saying the HoS of Ireland is comparable. I’m simply making the point that ‘but have Brits heard of them?’ is a totally irrelevant measure for the rest of the world.

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2021 10:05

That's because they aren't paying for all his kids, grandkids, sisters, brothers etc, nor the upkeep of their numerous palaces and castles

No one could pick them out of a lineup. And that’s a good thing, for everyone.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 19/09/2021 10:05

@Evesgarden. Can you back up those sweeping statements?

Famous monarchies:. Two of the world's best-known monarchies: Thailand, Saudi Arabia.

And what's the size of a republic got to do with it? If you want a larger basis for comparison - purely in terms of republic/monarchy systems and nothing else - look at Germany, a country which for obvious reasons has already done the soul searching and massive structural work that the UK monarchists are terrified of.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 10:06

Laughing at God we could end up with any odd ball if we dont have the royal family!

If that's the best argument for keeping the RF then....

ponyexpress22 · 19/09/2021 10:09

To all these royalists who always cry "we could end up with with any old odd ball. Well you're ending up with Charles, whether you like it or not. The man with over a hundred servants and talks to plants.......and you're happy with that?

Wineandroses3 · 19/09/2021 10:09

I like the Queen and admire anyone who has devoted a lifetime to duty and service, she has not put as foot wrong in terms of her role as Queen, but her kids have made a show of her! Prince Andrew is an utter disgrace and the epitome of entitlement, he’s disgusting. Then there is Harry - the multi millionaire who never stops moaning and has probably done more damage to the Royal brand than they can ever come back from. Don’t like Charles either, he was having the affair with Camilla before and during his marriage to Diana, she was only 19 when she married him, imagine marrying into that.

[quote HeyGirlHeyBoy]Just leaving this here of our pretty impressive Irish President:

Love Michael D, he has earned his stripes as a socialist and earned his right to be president.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 10:11

@Wineandroses3 do you think Harry has done more damage than Charles did in the affair fiasco or Andrew?

Wineandroses3 · 19/09/2021 10:12

I like Kate though, just not sure she’s enough to save them.

ssd · 19/09/2021 10:15

The future is the young people and none of them i know have any time for the RF. Older people might still have a bit of ingrained respect, for want of a better word. They were brought up never questioning the RF. .My dcs are young adults and they think the RF is an outdated institution.

I cant see them lasting

Wineandroses3 · 19/09/2021 10:16

I think Andrew has done most damage to the reputation of the royal family. I think Harry and Megan are next - they have done the most recent damage, the Charles and Diana scandals were a long time ago now - people in their 20s probably won’t remember the Charles and Diana love triangle so perhaps that’s less significant in terms of who has damaged the Royal brand the most.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 10:18

She isn't. Nothing against her personally but the role she has to play is again incredibly outdated. I'm a 30 something working mother & she is irrelevant to me & my life. Young girls can look up to someone like Emma Raducanu.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/09/2021 10:22

I agree about Andrew @Wineandroses3. But Meighan and Harry, I think they were bloody lucky to get out and 90% of the crap in the media is just that, crap written to feed a Palace and racist agenda.

Unless Charles massively revamps the Royal family to be more in line with the European royals be will be our last monarch. I'm not sure he has the capacity to cope with the reduced status, he loves his pampered life.

Except for the fact that we have an aging population and there are a lot of us 60 somethings doffing our caps and saying 'Gawd Bless 'Er'.
E11en · 19/09/2021 10:30

Despite Andrew not being heir I think this current scandal is the most damaging. Charles is heir so his affair is second, but when it all came out, his mother still had 35+ years left as reining monarch. I think a lot of people nowadays consider it 1) OLD NEWS, 2) cancelled by diana's affairs and also the fact that Charles married Camilla and 3) just plain old sex with an adult is very tame compared to Ponce Andrew's behavior.

Harry, an attention seeking breakaway faction but nothing that will bring down the monarchy.

Blossomtoes · 19/09/2021 10:34

Yes, look at Germany which did no soul searching whatsoever and got rid of its monarchy at the end of WW1 as a knee jerk. Look at who they elected only a few years later. That went really well.

A lot of MN posters hate this country and yet they never consider how lucky they are to be able to criticise it freely. Let's consider the situation where the RF are abolished tomorrow. What wonderful changes will happen that affect the ordinary person for the better?
TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2021 10:42

Yes this is insightful.

A massive scale back could save it (which would involve significant return of funds/estates to the state) and all but the immediate heirs cut loose.

Unfortunately Charles is much less smart/adept at reading the public mood than his mother. He’d never countenance it on the scale it needs to be done. Plus he feels he’s ‘owed it’ at this stage.

It’ll all fall apart very quickly once he takes charge. So many people conflate liking the Queen with supporting the monarchy. It’ll be a huge test.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 19/09/2021 10:42

No, I was referring to its post-WW2 analysis of the balance of power, and its model of presidency which is far more democratic and transparent than what we have.

E11en · 19/09/2021 10:43

Yes, I can't see charles cycling around like the Danish / Dutch royals.

Evesgarden · 19/09/2021 10:45

@TheKeatingFive

Andrew is never going to be King

All it would have taken would have been Charles dying childless.

Then all hail our glorious king Andrew til he died

Dont worry about stuff that hasn't even happened or going to happen it will save you a lot of anxiety.
ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 19/09/2021 10:46

@derxa Public funds start being spent where they are needed, people start to feel as though they have a say in things, we draw lines and boundaries as to what we will and won't accept from our public figures, and we reappropriate land and resources for the benefit of 65 million, not 65.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 10:47

@derxa why do you think they should remain. I don't think my life will be better if they are abolished I just think it's ridiculous in 2021 that they still exist in their current form.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 19/09/2021 10:47

Prince Andrew should do a Lord Lucan.

Evesgarden · 19/09/2021 10:47

Yeah Donald Trump was really transparent and Boris Grin
