Carrying on from Thread 1.

Haven't seen the OP around, thread 1 is about to run out and someone asked for a new thread.

OP posts:
SpindleWhorl · 19/09/2021 09:10

The Telegraph online today has a very prominent story headlined:

Prince Andrew is being failed by his legal team's strategy, fear courtiers

Concern growing that Duke of York’s ‘wall of silence’ over sexual assault case is increasingly damaging the monarchy

So it's not just we silly little women on MN thinking like this. The monarchy is genuinely in serious trouble. The Queen's support for Andrew actually revolts me, whereas I was fairly indifferent to her before. I have friends who feel similarly, like they've seen her in a new, unflattering light.

WhatWouldKalindaDo · 19/09/2021 09:10

Evesgarden

I agree with this, although the monarch is heavily governed in what they can and can't do, they still have to follow rules too. Trump is a bad person but he was still elected in.

Trump was voted out too. That's democracy at work. Sometimes good people get voted in, sometimes bad. And sometimes a good person gets voted in who goes on to do bad things in office. The point is that we get to kick them out again at the next election.

Regarding having rules to follow, the Queen can't be changed with any crime so we're just lucky she's chosen not to break those 'rules', because honestly, how are you going to reprimand or remove someone who can be charged with a crime? (Even murder?)

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 09:11

The thing is though Idyllic they are not unpopular. They may appear unpopular on hate threads like this but in reality they are not. Just like Brexit was never going to happen on MN, the RF are not going away anytime soon.

Personally I think a lot will change upon the Queens death. I think younger generations are less dazzled by it.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 09:13

Questioning the Monachry would be comparing the benefits between a Republic & Monarchy. This is just personal attacks.

So we shouldn't personally attack Andrew? why not?

WhatWouldKalindaDo · 19/09/2021 09:13

That should have said CAN'T be charged with a crime.

MyOhMySimon · 19/09/2021 09:15

@HarrisonStickle

I agree with this, although the monarch is heavily governed in what they can and can't do, they still have to follow rules too.

They Queen lobbies to have the rules changed just for her.

Yes, the "they always follow rules and we can decide what they can/can't do" is another information they peddle to get the public off their backs. It will be mind-blowing to know they can get around many/most "rules", afterall who really makes them or is part of the approval community?

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 09:15

Who are you to tell people what they ‘should’ do?

Exactly

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 09:17

Someone mentioned that they do a lot for charity.

That was odd, I thought they had to do that. The idea we should be grateful? 🤔

derxa · 19/09/2021 09:17

Google ireland the type of people they elect as president. People have to Google them because no one has the slightest clue who they are outside of the Republic of Ireland. Just as you probably don't know who the prominent politicians are here in Scotland.

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2021 09:19

And?!?!

Not all countries want their HoS to be international tabloid fodder.

Didyousaynutella · 19/09/2021 09:21

Think they are no different than any of the other European royals. They just have more spotlight on them and it is more accepted the the European royals are just gonna do what they are gonna do, ours our held to higher standards.

WhatWouldKalindaDo · 19/09/2021 09:21

gibletjane

Quite.

I know lots of people who do far more charity work for little or no reward.

The Royal Family are incredibly well compensated for the little that they do. Often their visits to charities end up costing money.

derxa · 19/09/2021 09:23

Not all countries want their HoS to be international tabloid fodder. Which countries do? The tabloids write about people who are well known. The Queen is well known all over the world. The Obamas, Trump and Joe Biden seemed to be thrilled to meet her.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 19/09/2021 09:25

Just leaving this here of our pretty impressive Irish President:

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2021 09:31

They’re pretty happy to meet the Irish President too I think you’ll find.

The tabloids write about people who are well known.

And are having a field day with the um indiscretions of the Queen’s son and two grandsons. Believe or not, that’s not something other countries are envious of 😂

BeckyWithTheAverageHair · 19/09/2021 09:44

@TheKeatingFive Judging from the photos, I have to say that everyone looks happy to meet the Irish President!

Sloth66 · 19/09/2021 09:46

The heavily promoted narrative that they work tirelessly for the country and are beacons of respectability is no longer so mindlessly accepted. In fact, their actions reveal many to be grasping, entitled individuals.
A bit more scrutiny shows how much time they actually “work” and in most cases, it’s not very much.
Lives of leisure and idleness, travelling between their various luxurious properties.
Charles was reported to have a Travelling Yeoman amongst his retinue of staff. It’s 2021, they live as though it’s still 1880.

Many engagements consist of phone calls or brief visits, their main focus has been revealed to be protecting their lifestyles, the vast wealth, power and status.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 19/09/2021 09:52

@TheKeatingFive

Andrew is never going to be King

All it would have taken would have been Charles dying childless.

Then all hail our glorious king Andrew til he died

With a whole archipelago of Pacific islands on which to hold arms trafficking conferences. Lovely.
StoneofDestiny · 19/09/2021 09:52

😂😂Laughing at God we could end up with any odd ball if we dont have the royal family!😂😂

Well - it we elected them it would be our fault and we can de select them. As it is we have oddballs thrust upon us and we have to pay for the privilege to how them, their extended family and how ever many children they choose to produce. Jobs and homes for life for the lot of them!

SpindleWhorl · 19/09/2021 09:52

Off the top of my head, the first person that comes to mind in the category of 'Irish President' is the impressive Mary Robinson. Succeeded by Mary #2, Mary McAleese I think.

Scottish politicians - how long have you got?! I have some fairly robust opinions on SNP members like Wee Mhairi and what they're doing to Joanna Cherry; and the role of Lib Dem Alistair Carmichael in 'smoothing over' certain inconveniences of the, erm, scandal variety.

Yes I know about all of that too but how many English people do?
Idyllic · 19/09/2021 09:59

Sorry I had to dash off.
My earlier comment - just to be crystal clear - was a hypothetical one, not a personal attack on anyone.

Mind you, the RF has such good PR people that almost anything they do can be spun in a positive light eg PP and his racist comments spun as good humour, forthright, oh he’s from a different era etc etc.

TheKeatingFive · 19/09/2021 10:00

Yes I know about all of that too but how many English people do?

Who cares?

High awareness among bog standard Brits isn’t exactly the Irish goal. 😂

She has an excellent reputation in Ireland and among the global diplomatic community. That’s what’s important.

lboogy · 19/09/2021 10:00
@MyOhMySimon Are the self-appointed prefects out again? They only like royal threads where they can slag off the Sussexes to their hearts' content.

Mention that perhaps the entire institution is corrupt and deserving of criticism and suddenly we're vile and they're running with tales to MNHQ.

What's most surprising is when HQ actually listen to them. I've seen far worse threads and comments than what you posted yesterday left to stand but I guess the prefects are not so bothered about those Hmm
Quite right

ponyexpress22 · 19/09/2021 10:03

Ireland's presidency works very well. Theres no resentment about how much it costs. That's because they aren't paying for all his kids, grandkids, sisters, brothers etc, nor the upkeep of their numerous palaces and castles
