Let's take away the servants and see her at a gala dinner straight from the local primary, after discovering nits and popping to Boots to delouse the entire family then losing it with Wills because he was on his phone and burnt the lasagne.

Catherine did look amazing last night but the media's reaction vindicates what Hilary Mantel said - they talk about her like there's nothing more to her than how she looks or what she wears.

Kate gives the public exactly what they want from a woman marrying in.

Does as she's told. Expresses nothing but the most uncontroversial opinions (doesn't speak much actually). Cultivates nice, safe, feminine interests like gardening, playing tennis and early years. Looks good in clothes (fashion choices on the safe side). Thin. Smiles a lot. Produces cute children.

It's depressing that this is what the public are looking for, but I have to hand it to Kate for delivering. I can never decide if this is a very clever, cultivated image, or she's naturally like this.

K&W are playing the game for all they're worth. Because their overprivileged lives depend on it.

I do think W would be unpopular without K. He is not particularly likeable, he dresses like a 55 year old Rotarian, and seems to hide irritation and annoyance not very well
