Haven't seen the OP around, thread 1 is about to run out and someone asked for a new thread.

Yes, a lawsuit for £7m from the previous owner

Some reports say the Queen paid it off, some say it will be cleared if this debt goes through

Roussette · 27/09/2021 10:16

Not debt!

Sale

Plumtree391 · 27/09/2021 10:27

@ChurchofLatterDayPaints

Plumtree carefully leaving out the raging Nazi forced to abdicate in 1936... Bit more than "scandalous", perhaps "criminal" might be a better word.
I was emphasising the good ones, my point being that there have always been baddies but some have shone out in a positive way.
Monkeymoo99 · 27/09/2021 10:36

In the 21st Century, having a hereditary head of state is an embarrassment.

A country obsessed with what these lot do every day, is an embarrassment.

It speaks to our backward looking, “Best of British” bulls8t in this country.
Backward, outdated parliamentary system, honours system etc etc.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 27/09/2021 11:12

Why do people persist in treating this like a soap opera, cheering the ones they like and booing the rest of them? You've got Corrie and Eastenders for that.

There are no "good ones". Since the 1930s they've been a family of Nazi sympathizers, and Edward VIII was an actual Nazi; the RF made up the story about Wallis Simpson (also a Nazi) to save their own ££££ and position.

Name a single member of the RF who's done something concrete and genuine to distance themselves from their vile history of racism, fascism, gambling, drinking, womanising and landgrabbing. You just can't, simply because they are all self-serving racists with no moral fibre whatsoever.

Italy rightly exiled its monarch for links to Mussolini and refused to let the male descendants of Savoia return to the country; Churchill just sent Edward VIII to govern the Bahamas (as if he had any right to be there in the first place) and the royal gravy train trundled on.

These are real people still causing real damage in the real world.

How can anyone look at the British Empire and talk about "good ones"?

Blossomtoes · 27/09/2021 11:22

You might want to get some basic facts right @ChurchofLatterDayPaints. The PM at the time of the abdication was Stanley Badwin, not Churchill. The abdication crisis was because a reigning monarch could neither be divorced or married to a divorcee, it had nothing to do with Edward Vlll’s political leanings. Wallis Simpson did us all a favour, given subsequent discoveries about their political sympathies.

And before you make another of your libellous and offensive accusations, correcting factual errors isn’t defence or condoning.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 27/09/2021 11:39

The facts are correct: I was clearly referring not to Edward VIII's coronation (which took place 2 years after he was videoed teaching Liz and her sister to give Nazi salutes), but to his appointment as governor of Bahamas, which was done in 1940 by Churchill.

The RF would really, really like you to believe the Wallis Simpson thing, in fact they need you to believe it.

The point is, why wasn't Ed VIII being exiled, disgraced and imprisoned for treason instead of being handed governorships of former colonies (whose people he despised) and then being allowed to live a jetset lifestyle? And why weren't the RF making public statements dissociating themselves from everything Ed VIII did?

Total piss-take.

Roussette · 27/09/2021 11:47

He was objectionable, him and his self serving wife who actually despised hum. They just cavorted round the fleshpots of Europe getting freebies, when they weren't cosying up to Nazis

I think that's why the Queen has been so revered, it's what might have been. A weak easily led man or a woman dedicated to duty. I think he would've been an Andrew if he hadn't been exiled.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 27/09/2021 12:02

Beat me to it, @Barewires. Again, they're a bit more than "objectionable".

Just look at those smiles:

PMSL at “strenuous efforts to get him away from Europe beyond the reach of the enemy” from the Guardian article.

Roussette · 27/09/2021 12:09

Bloody hell...this bit Shock

A treasonous traitor then

Churchill told the US president that fears for the duke’s safety had led to his appointment as governor of the Bahamas, part of “strenuous efforts to get him away from Europe beyond the reach of the enemy”.

Andrew seems to be in line for a medal from his mother! Hoping that all this nonsense has died down by then obviously.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 27/09/2021 22:15

I don't think Q believes in the naughty step or consequences.

Being discussed on the PA thread atm.

TheKeatingFive · 27/09/2021 22:23

I’m not sure doling out medals to people who did sweet FA during the pandemic, and some of whom are less than universally popular is a good idea.

Plumtree391 · 28/09/2021 03:42

He will be getting a medal for his military service. He was in the navy for a long time and saw active service in the Falklands. He might have stayed in the navy if his marriage hadn't fallen apart, he really enjoyed and was good at it. Prince Harry will presumably receive a medal because he served in the army for ten years - again he liked it but lost two long term girlfriends because they didn't like the idea of being a forces wife and also couldn't cope with the royal package (I don't blame them for that).

One could argue it's a pointless, outdated sort of thing, like the Honours system, but it happens and many people do appreciate it.

I daresay there will be people especially honoured for outstanding work during the pandemic. I wouldn't like recognition for myself but I am fiercely private and anything I do to help others is kept quiet. Oh not that I do anything much, I don't want to give the wrong impression there, but just saying I am by nature a discreet person.

What a difference in reporting on the two princes from you Hmm

You know PA 'was good at it' do you?

Harry saw active service too you know, I wonder if he 'was good at it' too...

It's a platinum jubilee medal, nothing to do with serving in the armed forces, as I understand it

TheKeatingFive · 28/09/2021 07:29

Loads of them are getting medals, York girls, the Philips kids, you name it. So it’s not just about military service.

many people do appreciate it.

Hmm we’ll see how well Andrew getting honoured will go down, won’t we?

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 08:02

I agree. The Jubliee medals are an absurd concept. They’re like chocolate coins. And I’m married to some who has both the silver and gold ones. The platinum one isn’t being given to veterans so fuck knows how Andrew qualifies.
ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 28/09/2021 08:14

Perhaps Andy's will be square with a nice red ribbon: "Mum fixed it for me".

TheKeatingFive · 28/09/2021 09:05
Blush
ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 28/09/2021 09:38

Cringe indeed, but these are the guys who get the honours.

Another Knight Bachelor whose police investigation mysteriously "failed to reach its proper end" 9 years prior to the award:

ponyexpress22 · 28/09/2021 10:37

It all shows how meaningless these medals are if Andy gets one.

Roussette · 28/09/2021 10:41

Yes, it rather makes a mockery of the whole thing

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2021 10:44

@Roussette

Yes, it rather makes a mockery of the whole thing
It doesn’t need to be made a mockery. You should hear what the recipients of them say. Nobody takes a bit of metal handed out to 400,000 people seriously, Andrew or no Andrew.
