Carrying on from Thread 1.

Haven't seen the OP around, thread 1 is about to run out and someone asked for a new thread.

OP posts:

Here it is. Fascinating stuff.

Apart from what I listed above, Banks and stock markets will close, businesses will close, travel disruptions, all police and military personnel new uniforms, national holidays, passports will change

Apparently the coronation is a year after her death so we might be wall to wall for a year Shock

Blossomtoes · 24/09/2021 14:39

That’s really interesting @Roussette. We’ve already experienced most of what that 2018 article predicted with covid. The changes to stamps, etc will be incremental - we’ve still got some VR postboxes.

The really big costs will be the funeral and the coronation. I suspect they’ll be eye watering. Still, we’ve had nearly 70 years to save up!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/09/2021 15:53

Many thanks for that very interesting article, Roussette - but "oh gawd!!" about having to wait a year for the coronation

I suppose they'll need time to get everything in place, but the drip-drip of PR in the meantime's going to be unbearable

BalloonSlayer · 24/09/2021 15:55

What nonsense the post boxes won't get changed when the Queen dies, nor will coins. There are loads of postboxes with previous monarchs' arms on them. Did you really think that every time a monarch dies all the post boxes are replaced?

When I was a child there were loads of coins with Queen Victoria on them! I think the old shillings in particular, we used them as 5p pieces for a few years after decimalisation. New coins will be minted as required in due course and they will have Charles on them but they won't be replaced en masse.

Samcro · 24/09/2021 16:04

@BrilloPaddy

I think Covid has meant that we've lost the connection to HM.

It's quite sad really, and add in the media furore about Andrew and Harry/Meghan, we're seeing the RF in a different way.

I'm not sure what role they have in future generations.

good point. I have found myself thinking how little they actually do. I know people my dc age(20's) are not fans. but when "work" is playing tennis, like Kate today, who can blame them. (Kate was on the news today, that is why I mentioned her)
Roussette · 24/09/2021 16:19

Balloon coins in circulation will be phased out just as we've normally done, but new currency will be minted immediately.

I never said they would be replaced en masses, of course they won't!
Not sure where you got that from.
Have you read the article?
dont think so

CathyorClaire · 24/09/2021 20:44

TV is going to be unbearable when Brenda goes. Philip was a warm-up and Auntie has already stamped her foot and said coverage wasn't OTT.

TF for Netflix, Now and Prime is all I can say.

Netherlands not that impressed with theirs either.

Great post on reddit/Abolish the Monarchy explaining why.

It's really funny looking at that pic. They just look like ordinary people, you wouldn't know them from Adam unless you were Dutch.

Which shows how daft the whole thing is.

HarrisonStickle · 24/09/2021 22:41

I thought of this thread when I saw the news coverage of Kate "working" by meeting some tennis champions and having a session with Emma Raducanu. What a joke.

AnnunciataZ · 24/09/2021 23:03

But nothing like Kate in a tennis skirt to take attention away from the dodgy git holed up at Balmoral!

What a grafter she is.

'some tennis champions' ? They'd all just won the US Open. The event was to promote tennis and celebrate the US Open wins. It was featured on all the main news bulletins so job done.
Roussette · 25/09/2021 07:27

I was amused at the news reports on this visit. They said that Kate 'played a doubles match' with Emma Radacanu. Given she was at the Tennis club for only an hour, I wondered how long that 'match' could've been as she was meeting teens on the LTA youth program.

However, a wonderful PR exercise that's for sure.

People always say they’d never want to be royals but imagine being a thoroughly ordinary person and getting to meet amazing people like this!

…even worse having those amazing people groveling at the likes of the RF.

Gross

This was my exact thought when I saw the front pages today. She never usually wears a teeny tiny skirt for sports, usually a tracksuit because she was told off at the start that royals don't show their legs and her skirts were too short. Now they need some good PR, lo and behold her legs come out.
HarrisonStickle · 25/09/2021 08:30

Yes, I know, hence they were tennis champions.

I can imagine the conversation at Kensington Palace:
DOC: Are we set for the tennis event today. I'll be having a knock about with Emma R?
Royal Aide: Sorry that's all been cancelled. We're worried about the reaction on Mumsnet. Wear one of your coats and sit at the side quietly.

Roussette · 25/09/2021 08:37

How lucky is Kate though...having a love of tennis and just like that to be able to knock a few balls with the wonderful US open champion, Emma.

HarrisonStickle · 25/09/2021 08:40

Exactly! Kate's the lucky one, meeting these exeptional people and playing a bit of tennis with them.

Blossomtoes · 25/09/2021 08:43

She’d probably agree that she’s lucky.

ponyexpress22 · 25/09/2021 09:06

I always find it strange and annoying too when we see the royals getting to meet really high achievers in sport etc and they're all waiting in line looking starstruck because they're getting to meet an unachieving member of the royal family.

I always think it's the royals who should look in awe.

How arrogant they are, that assurance they have that they are superior.

TheKeatingFive · 25/09/2021 09:12

It’s really strange. There’s always this denial from monarchists that they feel the royals are innately superior to them. But why else would this charade continue?

I remember Theresa May curtsying to William one time when she was PM. It really hit home. She’s the PM and has achieved so much in her life and she’s there bowing and scrapping to Wills? Bizarre.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 25/09/2021 09:18

Same as the bowing and hand kissing to the pope etc. It is bizarre. Humans are bizarre.

Livingtothefull · 25/09/2021 09:21

I agreed that it looked utterly bizarre. Heightened by the fact that Theresa May is a very ungraceful curtseyer; to see her grovelling in front of William, a young man, was incongruous and frankly rather offensive.

Curtseying is considerably more undignified and demeaning imo than the male equivalent bowing.

If he is really as modern and progressive as some monarchists claim, why does he not call a halt to it? Surely he can see the absurdity and what a bad look it is?

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 25/09/2021 09:25

Stopping the bowing-scraping-poncy titles would be like banning audience participation at a kids' pantomime. Would undermine the whole performance. Nobody would go.
