He ate a cream tea with a spoon

First date. He seemed perfectly nice and we went and got a cup of tea in a cafe. We ordered a cream tea for two and he ate his scone with the teaspoon that came with his cup of tea.

I wasn’t horrified or anything like that I was just surprised. Is that a thing? I suppose it’s puddingy but I’ve always just picked it up and eaten it like toast, I thought everyone did.

That would make my fanny snap shut like an angry clam

Cheeseballer · 14/09/2021 21:36

You weren't horrified?

3peassuit · 14/09/2021 21:36

It’s jam first then cream, deviation is unacceptable.

SeaShoreGalore · 14/09/2021 21:36

Yeah, he’s not going to be a good fuck, is he?

TertiusLydgate · 14/09/2021 21:37

That would put me off, tbh.

It implies he has a poor grasp of etiquette.

I see the Cornish have turned up with their strange ways 😁
NannyAndJohn · 14/09/2021 21:38

He's at best frigid, at worst an utter creep.

toocold54 · 14/09/2021 21:40

I remember going to a friends and they were horrified I ate some cake with my hands. I then went on a school trip and remembering how horrified my friend and her parents were I thought I’d be posh and use a spoon which apparently is also wrong! Now when I am in company I will eat cake with a fork but with my family or alone I eat with my hands.

MyMabel · 14/09/2021 21:40

What an absolute weapon.
Careful with that one OP.

Zeal · 14/09/2021 21:42

Scones, cheesecake, Strudels. All can be eaten with a knife and fork.

SunIsBehindGreySky · 14/09/2021 21:43

TertiusLydgate

It implies he has a poor grasp of etiquette.

My daughter actually studies DeBretts once for etiquette and told me I am pretty much spot on for most things, I said most if it is common sense.

People who are clueless I have come across and made out I was the weirdo, was a housemate who dipped her butter covered knife into my jam and a man who thought I was trying to poison someone, because I placed salt on the edge of a plate of food for someone to salt their one food with their knife, the meal was served away from the table.

People can learn these things, so would not discount him.

MoveAhoy · 14/09/2021 21:44

Maybe he was nervous and picked up the spoon by accident but he was too embarrassed to put it down again so he just went for it. Grin

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 14/09/2021 21:45

Cake forks, best thing ever. We don't eat cake or messy desserts without a spoon or a cake fork.

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/09/2021 21:46

This sort of man, when preparing for a night of passion, first takes off his shoes and places them side by side. He then removes his clothing, carefully folding each item and placing on a chair in a neat pile. Jacket (if worn) is hung on back of chair.

He does not do unbridled.

lannistunut · 14/09/2021 21:46

I think it sounds fine, although unorthodox.

I completly agree.
burritofan · 14/09/2021 21:47

Whether it was weird on not hinges on how he pronounced ‘scone’…

daisychain01 · 14/09/2021 21:47

Give him the benefit of the doubt this one and only time.

If he holds his knife like a pen, give him The Big E, without further ado.

TomFuckery · 14/09/2021 21:48

#sconegate

BarbaraofSeville · 14/09/2021 21:49

Did you go on a date with <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D9Z-vdx_PcgU&ved=2ahUKEwiPxZGsqv_yAhVlmVwKHblwB5IQxa8BegQICRAE&usg=AOvVaw0G-SoiMy18p55kyj8HCxle" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Elaine's boss from Seinfeld?

But seriously, I don't see an issue. People eat other types of cake and cream with a spoon, so what difference does it make?

People on here seem very set in their ways and narrow minded about how things should be done, when it often doesn't matter or is subject to cultural variations.

TheFoundations · 14/09/2021 21:50

@godmum56

I eat jam doughnuts with a knife and fork.
I think I love you.
Spidey66 · 14/09/2021 21:50

It sounds odd.....but people eat cake e.g. Victoria sponge with a fork and no-one thinks anything of it, and a scone is not dissimilar.

VividImaginationAgain · 14/09/2021 21:50

He probably went to the same primary school as my son who was told off for picking up his slice of pizza. It should be eaten with a knife and fork don’t you know! Geez.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/09/2021 21:52

I have a set of cake forks. But I wouldn't eat a scone using them. Or use a spoon. Scone, jam, cream. I go for the toast way of eating but if I was worried about dribbles or looking like a pigGrin, I'd cut the scone into half then into mouth sized bites. But not all at once. So, scone into half. Decide if you can scoff half. If not, cut that half into bitesized pieces one at a time. And repeat.

SunIsBehindGreySky · 14/09/2021 21:54

I may be wrong, I was under the impression scones are bread (not cake) and it is to be torn, then you use the knife to butter it, or cream in this situation.

I wouldn't discount someone who doesn't know these things, not everything comes to all easily.

I think I am probably not far off as I said DD going for an ASD assessment studied DeBretts for this stuff as we are clueless about so much Grin
