He ate a cream tea with a spoon

First date. He seemed perfectly nice and we went and got a cup of tea in a cafe. We ordered a cream tea for two and he ate his scone with the teaspoon that came with his cup of tea.

I wasn’t horrified or anything like that I was just surprised. Is that a thing? I suppose it’s puddingy but I’ve always just picked it up and eaten it like toast, I thought everyone did.

OP posts:
lescompagnonsdeloue · 14/09/2021 20:55

Big red flag, OP.

TheShadoutCrepes · 14/09/2021 20:57

Creepy and unnatural.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/09/2021 21:02

Always eat cake with a fork. Oh no, I’m weird

All Canadians do this. They all have a drawer of cake forks, like Victorian ladies.

Cocopogo · 14/09/2021 21:07

I eat pizza and burgers with a knife and fork but I would never do this

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 14/09/2021 21:09

OMG suggest you advertise for dates in The Telegraph in future.

The horror!

owlbethere · 14/09/2021 21:10

I eat burgers in layers. Particularly Big Macs, I don’t know why, I just do. I forget this is a bit weird until I do it around a new person.

I’m otherwise normal I swear!

FatCatThinCat · 14/09/2021 21:11

Is he British? I live in Sweden and it would be entirely normal here (but still weird to me).

StarryStarrySocks · 14/09/2021 21:15

He's probably posting on another forum asking if he should go on a second date with a woman who eats her scones like toast! Grin

Holidaytan · 14/09/2021 21:15

This sort of makes me think he’d be quite uptight in bed…….. dislike of mess etc.

I slept with a guy who leapt up and stripped the bed, putting on a new sheet the moment he withdrew……. I didn’t see him again.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/09/2021 21:25

@MiddleClassProblem

Maybe he was trying to look polite and like he had good table manners like when people try to eat a burger with a knife and fork…
I went out with a lad who did that. I tried to put it behind me, as he was bloody gorgeous, but then he told me his Mum bought him his plaid shirts and ironed them and his jeans to have perfect creases - and he refused to undo the top button because 'it wouldn't look neat'.

He gave me the right gallops, but then I started having visions of him cutting into his Wimpy burger so that each morsel was about a centimetre across...

HotPenguin · 14/09/2021 21:27

I think he was trying to avoid an embarrassing food accident. But if he put his crumb-covered spoon back in the communal jam then LTB.

ElJardinDeLosSuenos · 14/09/2021 21:27

@DonttouchthatLarry
…and now I want crumble!

Flyingantday · 14/09/2021 21:28

@DonttouchthatLarry

Now I'm picturing Jim from Friday Night Dinner with his 'creamy tea' Grin
Was going to say this but checked the thread first to see if someone already hadGrin
Anjo2011 · 14/09/2021 21:29

I’d find it unusual, but not a deal breaker . I’d give him another chance!

Anniegetyourgun · 14/09/2021 21:30

I think it depends how crumbly the scone is. As long as it holds together the toast method is fine, but if bits start to go round the edges it's only a matter of time before the whole topping lands in your lap. A spoon is regrettably sometimes safest in a public place. A teaspoon though... surely a dessert spoon is the only decent utensil for the job?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2021 21:30

I have pastry forks ( small thin forks ) and sporks (spoons with fork tines and a serrated knife edge)

I am on the hunt for a Runcible Spoon and my life will be complete Grin

Not weird at all OP but I'm not a fan of scones so Ill bow out

RumblyMumbly · 14/09/2021 21:31

I think he was on his best behaviour because he liked you. If he's youngish he probably doesn't often go for cream teas when he socialises.

@HeAteItWithASpoonWhat age bracket are we talking?

Was he otherwise normal / good company?

Soupsseason · 14/09/2021 21:32

Did he put the jam or cream on first?. That would be the decider for me . (Cream 1st is obviously the correct answer)

IvySneezes · 14/09/2021 21:32

ICK Envy

godmum56 · 14/09/2021 21:32

I eat jam doughnuts with a knife and fork.

SunIsBehindGreySky · 14/09/2021 21:33

10owlbethere
I do that also.

Poor spoon guy.

IvySneezes · 14/09/2021 21:34

Once watched a really handsome manager at work eat a chicken breast with a spoon after tucking his napkin into his trouser waistband. We could never look at him the same again Grin

Plumtree391 · 14/09/2021 21:35

Bless him! I thought you were going to tell us he banged it with his little spoon and threw bits on the floor - then I saw it was first date.

Invisiblewoman1 · 14/09/2021 21:35

Threads like this is why I love mumsnet ☺️

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/09/2021 21:35

It avoids the first date nightmare of jam down your front and cream on your nose.

See, that can be avoided by putting the cream on first then the jam. As it should be Grin

There is nothing weird about eating cake with a fork, or owning cake forks. Unlike eating a scone with a spoon, which is just deviancy of the worst kind.
