MN has often made me feel inadequate as a parent, what with all the sporting, musical and academic achievements and perfectly behaved children, while my DC are nice enough but decidedly average Grin

But come on, you're going to have to up your game. A* (Maths!) and A at Alevel and a Grand Slam in the space of 3 months. And seemingly lovely manners too.

Obviously I'm only playing, but just how?!

I agree. My children are 21, 19 and 16 and I have told them (jokingly) how disappointed I am at what they’ve achieved. Even my 16 year old has nearly missed her chance.

SuperbLyrebird · 12/09/2021 13:15

What? Emma only got TWO A levels. Pitiful under achiever.

SuperbLyrebird · 12/09/2021 13:17

And she's only gone to a Grand Slam tournament. Your DC are failures if they don't go to a RG uni ...

x2boys · 12/09/2021 13:25

Shes very pretty too.

This made me laugh

Rivermonsters · 12/09/2021 13:32

Everyone can do great things, most don’t choose to

MissyB1 · 12/09/2021 13:35

@CheddarandChutney

Brilliant 🤣
Reallybadidea · 12/09/2021 13:39

I'm assuming her parents are Mumsnetters tbh.

As an aside, how tall is she? Having tall, skinny children is the epitome of MN parenting perfection.

Hellocatshome · 12/09/2021 13:42

Thing is society cant function if it is full of A* getting Grand Slam winning teenagers. Some of us have to be not so great or average or below average. We all have our place.

MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2021 13:47

She is incredible but started at 6 so a few of my dc have missed the boat

Also so calm anc together, and nice. Hard to top

SmashingBlouson · 12/09/2021 13:48

Maybe it's because her parents spent less time gloating on here how their child gifted and spent time with her instead.

It is very impressive and I'm really happy for her.

No Nobel prize won yet though, which is disappointing. Grin

Agive her time shes only 18 after all 🤣
TheWoleb · 12/09/2021 13:52

I felt a little bit sad for her. She said she had spoken to her dad and his response was, "better than I thought". She also said he is very hard to please but she thinks she did it today.

That sounds exactly like my Dad. I did once win a shilling at the village sports.

My dad said the same when I won a huge international scholarship. He said: hmm not bad. Of course he was very proud. But my parents (also Asian) weren’t pushy. They always wanted me to have some perspective. I am the same with my children.

Ninhurt · 12/09/2021 13:58

Well...yeah, but...erm... can she...?

Um...

Bollocks.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/09/2021 13:59

I know nothing about her parents but frankly there is no way I’d want my DC playing competitive tennis or swimming etc. She seems lovely though. And I think she’s 5’9” @Reallybadidea Grin

Cuck00soup · 12/09/2021 14:05

But how many meals can she get out of a chicken? If it's just a measley 5 dinners, she's just not trying hard enough.

Emma, I am delighted delighted for you really. Star

Summerhillsquare · 12/09/2021 14:14

She is just awe inspiring, her achievements bordering on super human. What I particularly enjoyed and few commented on is that she won her final point with an ace!

Rivermonsters · 12/09/2021 14:18

@LuchiMangsho poor kids

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/09/2021 14:21

She cites her Chinese side for her self belief.

And the child of immigrants who often seem to encourage hard work.

AlexCabot · 12/09/2021 14:22

My teenager couldn't win a game of tiddlywinks let alone tennis but she is a master dishwasher stacker which I feel is a more useful life skill Grin

I suppose with the prize money Emma won't have to take in ironing or start matched betting anytime soon!

Nobel Prize? Hope she wears a skirt to collect it! (The punchline fron one of the very early feminist jokes)
crumpet · 12/09/2021 14:26

Definitely OP. I gently mentioned to my teens earlier in the summer that given Emma at Wimbledon, the 12 year old Olympic medalists and there was also a teen artist, that quite frankly they seemed to be disappointingly slow developers.
