MN has often made me feel inadequate as a parent, what with all the sporting, musical and academic achievements and perfectly behaved children, while my DC are nice enough but decidedly average Grin

But come on, you're going to have to up your game. A* (Maths!) and A at Alevel and a Grand Slam in the space of 3 months. And seemingly lovely manners too.

Obviously I'm only playing, but just how?!

OP posts:
DdraigGoch · 12/09/2021 14:26

Come on OP, Nelson had command of his own ship at 19 and Mozart was a composer at eight. You're really slacking!

OnlySpam · 12/09/2021 14:27

Her dad didn't say that though did he? The context given by a couple of you is completely wrong

She said he was very proud and said ' you're even better than your dad thought.'

And that's a totally different spin that what's been described below

itsgettingwierd · 12/09/2021 14:28

@Snoopsnoggysnog

I know nothing about her parents but frankly there is no way I’d want my DC playing competitive tennis or swimming etc. She seems lovely though. And I think she’s 5’9” *@Reallybadidea* Grin
I'm with you on the swimming.

My ds wants to be a Paralympian.

Clearly I support his dreams 100% and get him to all training and meets etc and it's basically where all our money goes.

But I dream of the day he can drive himself and I'm not up at 4am 4 times a week. And I can turn up to meets to see him race and not for warm up and half a session he's then sat out for!

I think there is just certain people in life who are lucky enough to be born with the right muscles, right opportunities and parents who can and will support.

I've seen some swim parents who are really pushy and I feel for their kids. I just drive ds and say well done afterwards. If he wants this it has to come from him. But very few have the personal inner drive to go all the way even if they have the talent. It's a huge commitment.

I also like seeing that footballers nowadays are expected to get an education and achieve well in school.

Elite sport is a family commitment!

Cattitudes · 12/09/2021 14:33

@SuperbLyrebird

What? Emma only got TWO A levels. Pitiful under achiever.
A least she won't need a student loan if she gives up hitting balls and goes to uni. Might not make it into an RG uni without a bit more effort though. Do we think that winning the US Open would make it into her personal statement though?
Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 14:36

My DD told me that her grade 6 dance exam would count for UCAS points. I dont even know what UCAS points are or how many you need but youd think winning the US open would get you quite a lot!Wink

TableFlowerss · 12/09/2021 14:36

I love that she’s a brilliant role model for young girls, instead of all the wannabe reality social media ‘celebs’.

megletthesecond · 12/09/2021 14:37

She's far more disciplined than mine.
My 14yr old is in trouble after gaming until 3am and waking me up yelling. Console now confiscated to car.

AmelieLovesAutumn · 12/09/2021 14:41

@TheWoleb

I felt a little bit sad for her. She said she had spoken to her dad and his response was, "better than I thought". She also said he is very hard to please but she thinks she did it today.
Oh that's sad. What a miserable bastard. I guess now we will begin to understand the other pressures she was under during Wimbledon.
OnlySpam · 12/09/2021 14:46

@AmelieLovesAutumn he didn't say that at all nor in that context.

It's really worth people reading what was said first before rewriting it all

bluebell34567 · 12/09/2021 14:46

@Summerhillsquare

She is just awe inspiring, her achievements bordering on super human. What I particularly enjoyed and few commented on is that she won her final point with an ace!
agree.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2021 14:47

he has of course been misquoted

she is such an example for young women, as are they both!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/09/2021 14:47

@AmelieLovesAutumn

Read @OnlySpam’s post.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2021 14:48

and they are both not yet 20

riromay · 12/09/2021 14:49

Chinese and Romanian parents are a tough mix ( super academically / sports focused) , but hopefully she wasn't pushed too hard

MolyHolyGuacamole · 12/09/2021 14:51

@x2boys

Shes very pretty too.
This is not an accomplishment
bluebell34567 · 12/09/2021 14:52

i think her parents has an effect on her calmness as well as other qualities.

TSSDNCOP · 12/09/2021 14:52

I'm so thrilled for her, particularly following her wobble at Wimbledon. Her smile was fantastic, just ear to ear. She seems very humble too. I wish her only great things for her future, and I bet her parents are chuffed to bits and just want her home now.

NewlyGranny · 12/09/2021 14:53

Asked DD2 just now what she had achieved at 18 compared to Radacanu. She protested she was busy getting into uni. Told her Radacanu has done that as well! 😂

drumandthebass · 12/09/2021 14:56

@Reallybadidea

I'm assuming her parents are Mumsnetters tbh.

As an aside, how tall is she? Having tall, skinny children is the epitome of MN parenting perfection.

5'9" I believe
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/09/2021 14:57

@MarshaBradyo

She is incredible but started at 6 so a few of my dc have missed the boat

Also so calm anc together, and nice. Hard to top

Well mine started playing Minecraft at 5, so HAH!
MrsSkylerWhite · 12/09/2021 14:58

SmashingBlouson

Maybe it's because her parents spent less time gloating on here how their child gifted and spent time with her instead.”

Maybe.
Someone at her tennis club made a throw away comment this morning that he watched her play as a junior. She fell and cut herself and her dad told her to get up and get on with it.
Not something I’d have done.

She seems very happy, though so maybe I should have 🤷‍♀️

Ninhurt · 12/09/2021 14:59

Yes @JesusInTheCabbageVan agreed!

She may be all that at tennis, but can she build an amoung us shaped mansion complete with water slide and volcano in minecraft? Hmmm?!

(Grin very well done to her of course, but we parents of non stardom children have to have our little pride too 😂)

legoriakelne · 12/09/2021 15:01

@Rivermonsters

Everyone can do great things, most don’t choose to
Lol. Yeh, the women in Afghanistan who can't even safely leave their homes could all win the US Open if only they chose to work a bit harder.

Besides which, once everyone is achieving something great it ceases to be regarded as great. That's the point of exceptionalism.

GrealishHairband · 12/09/2021 15:07

Meanwhile here in hairband house my 18 year old managed to drink the pint of water and take the paracetamol I left out for her after she came in at 5am AND managed to drag herself out of bed in time for starting work at 12. Didn’t manage to take yesterday’s make up off though but you can’t win em all.
😂

Mumoftwoinprimary · 12/09/2021 15:07

My BIL went straight from the GCSE exam hall to the European Junior Championships for his sport. (Literally - there was less than 4 hours between his last exam ending and his flight so his dad was in the car park with the car engine running and the invigilator said “ok - everyone stop writing now - all stay in your seats - Fred - GO - and good luck” and he ran out of school. Made the flight with about 30 minutes to spare.)

Only won a silver though.
