To think Emma Raducanu puts the puts MNetters to shame

MN has often made me feel inadequate as a parent, what with all the sporting, musical and academic achievements and perfectly behaved children, while my DC are nice enough but decidedly average Grin

But come on, you're going to have to up your game. A* (Maths!) and A at Alevel and a Grand Slam in the space of 3 months. And seemingly lovely manners too.

Obviously I'm only playing, but just how?!

@barskits
Agree, I said the same in a previous post.

Cam77 · 12/09/2021 17:00

To spell it out - even with great parents, you still need to distinguish yourself from the 10000s of others around the world who also have great, ambitious, resourceful parents. But that initial advantage (or “privilege” to use the fashionable” term) does provide one heck of an advantage over the even greater number who don’t have that formative driven environment.... I don’t think I’m making a controversial point here.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 12/09/2021 17:02

I hope she wins SPOTY.

it will be so nice to (a) have a female winner and (b) someone not from not F1 or football

Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 17:11

Or perhaps she'll be the next Roger Federer and continue to win major titles into her late 30s. What an unkind comment!

Or the next Serena Williams (who has won more grand slams than RF. ...? )Wink

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 17:42

She speaks Mandarin too.

I must admit that since she went to one of the super selective grammar schools beloved by MN, I was surprised that they let her only take 2 A levels and didn't insist on 3.

I am pleased for her though - I hope that whatever her secret was some of it can be bottled so that other teenagers get a share of it. It's pretty poor that British tennis hasn't won a women's Wimbledon title for 44 years, and the men's went even longer than that until Murray came on the scene.

As long as she doesn't get injured there is no reason why she shouldn't equal the records of Serena Williams or Margaret Court.

LuchiMangsho · 12/09/2021 18:01

@JaneJeffer You don’t need to feel sad for me. My dad and I have a great relationship. I think his point (which is the one I also make to my kids) is that sporting or academic achievement is great but we are lucky (I was lucky too- my dad is an academic and we had resources like Emma did). There is no need to get big headed. Be humble and be kind. So @Rivermonsters you don’t need to feel sorry for my kids. They are loved and looked after but I will always always make sure their head is screwed on the right way.

Fatya · 12/09/2021 18:05

I'm struggling to see how "you're even better than I thought" is anything other than a bursting-with-pride sort of comment.

LuchiMangsho · 12/09/2021 18:05

And it sounds like Raducanu’s dad was doing the same. Keeping her grounded.

She's got the Chinese market so could probably become a billionaire with her and her teams' drive and brains. Is she the most marketable tennis player ever?

beigebrownblue · 12/09/2021 18:10

I'm feeling very proud of this young woman and good luck to her.

The thing that worries me about this, is that the whole story is:

potenetially and I quote:

'A good day to bury bad news'

The bad news about all the young people who are not being supported.
Not having enough to eat.
Their parents being very stressed out trying to manage.

One individual success, as great and lovely as it may be does not change this situation.

I hope this young woman does what Marcus Rashford has done and pulls everyone up who does not have that training and disadvantage.

Tory govenrnement are manipulating her in the press to say,
'didn't we do well?'

No, Tory government didn't do well.

She is the exception rather than the rule.

How the hell did she manage to get an A* and A while practicing so much tennis?! I take it she didn't actually attend the school but did it online,? Or what? How??? I had assumed she had private lessons rather than attending a school. This girl is amazing. My DC had better start trying harder Angry
Libraryghost · 12/09/2021 18:14

What has she done for the climate though? How socially aware is Emma really?? Has she taken a refugee in for example?? Yes she is clever, nice personality, won the US open, young and nice looking, but is that ALL she has to offer?

beigebrownblue · 12/09/2021 18:14

that should have read

'who does not have that training and advantage'...

The amazing Marcus Rashford reached out to Raducanu with support when Piers Morgan laid into her when she pulled out of Wimbledon with what I assume was nerves. That twat loves picking on mixed race women Angry

I must admit that I only stay on MN for the county level sports team, beautiful (#nofilter), grammar school, Range Rover owning brag posts. Do not take that away from me.

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 18:21

TwatCunt Farage tweeted about Rafucanu's win with no irony. The hipocrisy of these cunts is infuriating

All in all I feel remembering that this young woman is eighteen years only.

My dd is sixteen.

They are strong. But they are in need of support.

And a hug from their mums/carers and dads.

Don't we know?

Peregrina · 12/09/2021 18:31

How the hell did she manage to get an A* and A while practicing so much tennis?!

Since it's a grammar school for super academic girls, I imagine that they would expect their pupils to get at least 3A or A*s if not 4, so I imagine they let her take only two in order to devote more time to tennis.

GrealishHairband · 12/09/2021 18:36

And no exams this year either so her academic year ended a lot earlier than usual with no exams to focus on and revise for (not taking anything away from her at all, she’s amazing).

I agree, but that wasn't my question. How did she manage it? It's amazing

This year has been hell on earth for many young people in this year.
TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 18:41

If she decides to apply to uni after her tennis career I assume she will need recent A levels/ an access course but the A and A* while playing sport at world class level will surely mean all the top unis will be open to her.

I doubt she will need to go to uni though with the multimillions/billions she will earn.
