To think Emma Raducanu puts the puts MNetters to shame

MN has often made me feel inadequate as a parent, what with all the sporting, musical and academic achievements and perfectly behaved children, while my DC are nice enough but decidedly average Grin

But come on, you're going to have to up your game. A* (Maths!) and A at Alevel and a Grand Slam in the space of 3 months. And seemingly lovely manners too.

Obviously I'm only playing, but just how?!

This year has been hell on earth for many young people in this year.
I agree but I don't think it has been the case for students at top schools. It has probably been a gift.

GrealishHairband · 12/09/2021 18:44

@beigebrownblue I know. I have an 18 year old as well. I was just adding to the discussion around how she’d managed to get an A and an A* and complete tennis.

GrealishHairband · 12/09/2021 18:45

As in, she’s been able to devote more time to tennis this year than she would have done in an ordinary year as she would presumably have had to do some revision.

I've done a full on sports day today. Mucked out the 2 rejected by dd (17) and never fully embraced by ds (7) winning machines aka The Ponies. Then legged it home to take DS to his sporting event. Results are based on speed and accuracy. It was his first event, he concentrated purely on accuracy and came 22/25. And half way through argued with me, dd who did the sport last year, a different coach and his own fucking coach it was based purely on accuracy.

Meanwhile, dd who was supposed to participate in some form or another, even if just coaching the little ones, died from hangover and fucked off for a cheeky kip in the car.

Ds currently sat with the poker chips and teaching himself how to play and dd is eating potato wedges, hankering after my ultimate chocolate eclair and not doing her essay.

I'm so proud I could burst.

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 18:56

I bet Emma didn't refuse to give her parents her GCSE results a la a recent thread on here
Grin

TSSDNCOP · 12/09/2021 18:59

My DS will be appearing in the next Marvel Movie.

He won't need a costume or anything on his role as Couchboy, half human, half sofa. Blends into any room seamlessly.

Although that thread had lots of posters saying good on DD for not divulging her grades if she didn't want to and it's her personal information. The weird dichotomy of MN posters Grin

Hey love this. Bless you. Mine the same. But perhaps, just maybe that will stand them in good stead in life not least because they will never look down on anyone who didn't go to Oxford.

Re. Oxford.
We 'less advantaged' plebs are coming your way. ..

Wish I'd been there. Sounds really lovely. Can't ride for toffee but would have loved it.
Bunnycat101 · 12/09/2021 19:18

My 5yo ‘plays’ tennis and she can’t hit the ball yet. I suspect Emma was one of the 5yo’s that could hit the thing from the off.

billy1966 · 12/09/2021 19:19

We are a family of tennis players and I have seen some truly fantastic junior tennis players in my time, but I thought their game was extraordinary.

The both played with a combination of precision, abandonment and fearlessness.

Just really going for it.
A real joy to see.

She comes across as such a lovely young women I really hope this notoriety won't be a heavy load to carry, her life's path has probably been changed for ever.

I don't think 'notoriety' is the word you meant
tempester28 · 12/09/2021 19:28

She is obviously amazing! If her parents are reading this - please don't let her get chewed up by the media. But yes she is amazing and wish her all the best in life- she has worked incredibly hard and her parents too I imagine. But yes she is clever, talented and well mannered what more could a parent ask for?

LuchiMangsho · 12/09/2021 19:50

Also remember she made her WTA debut in June. So actually she hasn’t been a full time professional for very long. It’s incredible.

TSSDNCOP · 12/09/2021 20:01

@beigebrownblue only if by 2026 you can read Gaming at OxbridgeGrin

Which college d'you reckon?

billy1966 · 12/09/2021 21:06

@TheHouseILiveIn

Yes I did, notoriety, as in being famous/celebrity, having the spotlight on her.

Notoriety in the positive!

bluebell34567 · 13/09/2021 00:14

@Cam77

Emma was born in Toronto, Canada, on 3 November 2000. Her father Ian is Romanian and her mother Renee is Chinese. They are both financial executives. She moved to London at the age of two, and started playing tennis at the Bromley Tennis academy when she was just five. The tennis sensation was a jack-of-all-trades as a child, dabbling in tennis, ballet, swimming, horse riding, golf, skiing, and even motocross.

Clever and rich parents who had the desire, resources and knowledge to push her hard to achieve from a young age. Of course, she also had the right physical and mental attributes to become an outstanding tennis player.

this makes her nearly 21 years old, but it is said she is 18

@Rivermonsters

Everyone can do great things, most don’t choose to
What? Of course not everyone can do great things. We can all do good things, but your statement ignores reality for most who have no outstanding talents.

My DC and their best friend would totally be up for that

HarrietPierce · 13/09/2021 07:05

"Emma was born in Toronto, Canada, on 3 November 2000."

She was born on 13 th November 2002 .

PamDenick · 13/09/2021 07:09

Prob been mentioned but she’s fluent in Chinese (and possibly Romanian also)…

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/09/2021 07:19

i just read she turned professional in 2018
and she beat Fernandez in 2017 in the under 17s at wimbledon

Peregrina · 13/09/2021 08:05

But now the Papers are going silly - talk of giving her an OBE or even a CBE. Just give the girl the chance to settle into the Circuit and get a number of wins under her belt - the next one for the UK of course, being a win at Wimbledon.

Maybe think of gongs and honours when she's thinking of retiring from professional tennis and can be shown to be the person who inspired a new generation of girls to get into the game.

This isn't a criticism of Emma - this is the stupid media - I hope her parents help to keep her feet on the ground.

Lelliebellieboo · 13/09/2021 08:05

Imagine being a kid at her school knowing that Emma Raducanu went there along with Dina Asher Smith. You’d never get away with skiving PE ever!!

As a side note both girls seem such lovely people, beautifully eloquent, bright and bubbly, confident, kind and seriously smart and super talented. That must be an exceptional school!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/09/2021 08:10

did they go to school together?

fantastic!
love Dina Asher Smith
