To think the royal family are a bloody embarrassment

Just that - why are we paying for this bunch when we could be spending the money on essential services? Let the Queen continue then after her just get rid of the whole bloody lot of them. We have and alleged paedo, a whinging multi millionaire in his 30's moaning constantly, an allegedly corrupt heir to the throne meeting dodgy russians for money....... just go, enough. Seriously - this is all Jeremy Kyle for poshos.

That's another aspect of the monarchy that's out of date. Head of the CofE should be a clerical role, not a royal role. The Archbishop of Canterbury would be a more sensible choice. Ridiculous that this has stuck all the way from Henry VIII's wealth-grab from Rome and unwillingness to bribe the Pope for divorces.

I think it's the same in all the Protestant monarchies. The monarchs of Denmark, Sweden and Norway are also titular heads of their respective national Lutheran churches.

Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 12:45

Charles will be King George VII, and Cam will be Princess Consort, officially because she isn't the mother of the heir, but we know that's not the real reason.

LakieLady · 12/09/2021 12:45

The rule forbidding the heir from marrying a Catholic has been rescinded, but because the monarch is Supreme Governer of the Church of England, obviously they have to be a member of said church

Another archaic bit of nonsense imo. It had some relevance in 1707, but not any more.

Church and state should be separate, and religious beliefs should have no place in politics. We shouldn't have sky pilots in the House of Lords. (We shouldn't have a HoL either, but that's OT).

SecretSpAD · 12/09/2021 12:46

Haven't read the thread, but just want to say this-

Seriously - this is all Jeremy Kyle for poshos.

Most accurate description of the royal family I've seen for years 🤣

KarenofSparta · 12/09/2021 12:46

True Gwenhwyfar, that clip was closer to the royals than MC, maybe upper Middle?

Seeingadistance · 12/09/2021 12:48

@Comedycook

I like the Queen. She is an excellent monarch. I think William and Kate will do a great job.

I think we should keep them for entertainment value...it's the best real life soap opera ever.

I agree with this, tbh.

There's nothing to stop her styling herself Queen, just as there would be nothing to stop her styling herself 'Princess of Wales' now. She/Charles have opted not to because it would be perceived as disrespectful to Princess Diana.

Whether, by the time Charles ascends the throne, Diana's memory will still be a consideration is another matter. No one born in the last 25 years will have any memory of her.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/09/2021 12:49

My adoration for Kate grew exponentially when I saw a picture of her once in stiletto heels managing to squat down to George's level to speak to him then raise herself back up again all whilst maintaining perfect balance. If I were similarly jobless I'd learn to be a contortionist!!

Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 12:51

it's the best real life soap opera ever.

Keeping Up With The Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Von Battenburgs would be a sure-fire hit on Netflix.

Up Yours, Harry.

ponyexpress22 · 12/09/2021 12:51

The old chestnut that the royals create revenue through tourism is just that, a chestnut....a myth that's continuously perpetuated to give them relevance.

The UK has so much more to offer tourists, far more than anything this family of over privileged, pampered elites have to offer. People would still come with or without them. The Palace of Versailles in France the perfect example.

A presidency run in the same way as Ireland's would be better value and more importantly.... equal for ALL......regardless of birth. . It's time we progressed from such an archaic and undemocratic system.

Comedycook · 12/09/2021 12:52

I'm really torn over Charles. On the one hand I'm still horrified over the tampon comment...to think we know such personal stuff about our future monarch is hideous. On the other hand, I think he deserves some praise for having to raise the boys after Diana's death and he went up in my estimation when he walked Meghan down the aisle.

Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 12:53

I think "Styling Yourself Queen" belongs on RuPaul's Drag Race.

To be THE (effing) Queen, you must be crowned, and Cam will have to make do with a coronet.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/09/2021 12:54

I've always been fairly royalist. Their handling of Andrew has changed all of that.

It's not even about his having sex with his accuser. After it was know Epstein was a paedophile he still associated with him. This to me is such a massive failure in character that I look at the whole family who were happy to keep contact with Andrew in any way as tainted. There are some things that require you to take a moral stand, even if it's difficult for your family or causes lots of publicity. This was one of those. Everytime the Queen is seen with him I'm one step closer to being an abolishonist.

RaspberryRoyale88 · 12/09/2021 12:57

I think they are parasites. Biggest scroungers in Britain who seem to be above the law.

Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 12:58

Not so much above the law as on a level with it.

If Queenie got done for speeding, it would be Regina vs Regina.

FeministTrust · 12/09/2021 13:00

I am horrified that the Queen is protecting an alleged rapist of a child.

All Royal titles are 'styles'. They usually have a number of possible titles to be known by, and choose a particular one as a style. E.g. Kate could style herself 'Princess William' but chooses to style herself 'Duchess of Cambridge'. Prince Charles could style himself 'Duke of Cornwall' if he wanted.
Blossomtoes · 12/09/2021 13:00

@SerendipityJane

Some people are happy to live in a country where not all are equal.

I'm not.

Where are you going to live then? Because there’s nowhere on the planet where all are equal.
billy1966 · 12/09/2021 13:00

I think the Queen has worked very hard during her lifetime.

However, sadly, at the end of her service, is herself hugely tarnishing her reputation by her support of her scummy son Andrew.

I believe he is utter scum, and she IS protecting him.

Deeply distasteful and disappointing.

CarpeVitam · 12/09/2021 13:01

@EishetChayil

Mass media and social media have been the start of the downfall of the monarchy.

Before, they could just go about their greedy, noncey business and the general public were none the wiser.

This!
Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 13:02

I don't think even Virginia Roberts-Giuffre is alleging rape, and she was 17 at the time and so above the age of consent in the UK, (not sure about NY.)

SecretSpAD · 12/09/2021 13:02

@itsgettingwierd

I don't think they'll survive if Charles takes reign as King.

I think they may realise that themselves and are priming Wills and Kate for the role. I think if they go down this route they may survive.

Erm, the whole of a monarchy is that you don't get a choice in who comes next. If you can choose to skip one person, then why not choose to have a different and more democratic arrangement....l

It isn't though Confused

The royal family bring in precovid £19 BILLION a year and they only cost £82.4 million in 2020. £69 million of that was on official duties.

That left over money goes in the treasury and any one must have a tiny brain to want to give up BILLIONS of pounds revenue Confused

It might suit you to get rid of the monarchy but finically we would lose out

Jaysmith71 · 12/09/2021 13:07

I think "Queen" is an official title that can be part of a style, eg, the present Queen has chosen to style herself Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, despite some Scottish objections.

Cam may be known as Princess Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (and Rothesay) or The Princess Consort, but to call herself queen when she aint Queen would be a tad perverse.

Blossomtoes · 12/09/2021 13:07

She’s not. She protecting the alleged rapist of a trafficked woman.
