To think the royal family are a bloody embarrassment

Just that - why are we paying for this bunch when we could be spending the money on essential services? Let the Queen continue then after her just get rid of the whole bloody lot of them. We have and alleged paedo, a whinging multi millionaire in his 30's moaning constantly, an allegedly corrupt heir to the throne meeting dodgy russians for money....... just go, enough. Seriously - this is all Jeremy Kyle for poshos.

This whole "Royal Family" idea was invented by George V just over a hundred years ago. Charlie Boy has already let it be known that he'll be downsizing and focussing on the direct line of sucession.

ConsulTremas · 12/09/2021 10:36

I agree that the monarchy should be quietly retired when the Queen dies. It’s got no place in a modern democratic society.

AJGranny · 12/09/2021 10:37

The tourist thing is a complete red herring. Anyone whose ever been to Versailles can tell you that the Monarchy don't even need to be alive to generate tourist income. Go far enough back and the crown estates will all have been nicked off someone or enclosed common lands in order to tax serfs.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/09/2021 10:37

Let's hope it's the beginning of the end. I doubt it because there is something peculiarly obsequious about the English and their adoration for the royals and generally very posh people. There was a thread not too long ago in which people were extolling the brilliance of the really posh people they'd come across who were apparently 'very nice and down to earth'.

SeriouslyISuppose · 12/09/2021 10:37

@SaturdaySpread

The Andre thing is a fascinating. Not the accusations obviously but the way he (his team) are handling it.

I can't decide if they're just so entitled they genuinely believe they can ignore it all because he's untouchable or if they're completely clueless. I wonder if he's taking advice or insisting he knows best?

Are we calling him ‘Andre’ now? Grin

Of course you’re right, OP, but a freakishly high percentage of the population have a slavish, forelock-tugging veneration for this bunch of embarrassing anachronisms, built out of post-empire nostalgia, a failure to understand how an elected ceremonial HoS could work, a misunderstanding of the tourist dollar, and a liking for tabloid fodder.

Yup.
Echobelly · 12/09/2021 10:38

What's mostly embarrassing is that presumably the rest of the world thinks Brits all love and go on about the royals when most are totally indifferent.

user1471462428 · 12/09/2021 10:40

I’m always surprised by how relaxed people are about the allegations made about Andrew and the way the queen is hiding/defending him. It’s truly despicable behaviour from our monarch. I used to be a monarchist but now I feel deep shame about our Royal family. If my son was facing allegations such as these and I truly thought he was innocent I would encourage him to fight it not hide.

ItWearsTheBatteriesOut · 12/09/2021 10:40

I used to be a royalist, the behaviour of the current lot is disgraceful.

Farfalle88 · 12/09/2021 10:40

@LizzieSiddal

I think we’re all watching the beginning of the end of the monarchy. The fact Andrew can dodge legal papers by hiding behind tax funded security is the end of any respect I have for any of them.
Absolutely. That and Charles taking donations for house improvements and then giving awards on the side . Then claiming he ‘can’t remember’.
Farfalle88 · 12/09/2021 10:41

There was a Biography written about Charles a few years ago. It really was an eye opener.

Anon778833 · 12/09/2021 10:41

YANBU

The RF encourages snobbery and people looking down on each other.

Why should the UK pay to reinforce this system when other countries don’t and get by perfectly fine with revenue from other sources, for example the palace of Versailles.

It’s completely ridiculous- we have to worship these unremarkable (in pretty much every way) people because of what vagina they came out of?

It’s stupid.

He won’t be making any sacrifices himself though. You can be sure of that.

You have to remember that these are people who allowed Jimmy Savile open access to their houses.

They must have known what he was and was he was doing and they turned a blind eye.

SandAndSea · 12/09/2021 10:44

They all seem to surround themselves with paedophiles.

They need to go.

DynamoKev · 12/09/2021 10:45

Haven't we stopped paying for him? I though he'd fucked off to the USA?

No a common or garden type Grin

AdoptedBumpkin · 12/09/2021 10:48

Prince Andrew is an embarrassment to the royals and the country. However, I find most of them less embarrassing than many Cabinet ministers.

yup, he's an absolute disgrace.

It is all very jeremy kyle lately. Better teeth. Better clothes, but yes.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 12/09/2021 10:49

Prince Andrew is the death knell of the Royal family. If he is shielded because he is a royal then we should not have a royal family.

DismantledKing · 12/09/2021 10:49

Britain isn’t a serious country any more; Brexit has shown how stupid we are as a nation, ruled over by a posh clown as PM. We deserve the Royals, and they deserve us; their ridiculous dysfunction reflects the country’s current situation.
A madhouse on an offshore island.

I think Andrew has handled himself appallingly since the allegations came out, but as I understand it the "crime" is only a crime because it happened in New York (?).

If exactly the same events had taken place in UK (and they did?), or indeed many other US states, there would be to case to answer so you can see why some British people might not understand the fuss. Still sleazy as hell though, even if not illegal.

Yep.

dreamingbohemian · 12/09/2021 10:53

It's crazy that Britain goes around lecturing other countries about democracy and good governance when it has this corrupt and profoundly undemocratic royal family in charge of the state. It's 2021 ffs.
