School shoes haven't lasted a week

Smartphonetoomuchoo · 10/09/2021 16:21

£20 in sainsburies which i thought looked quite sturdy. Well they lasted a grand total of 5 days. How can this be? The sole is ripped up after a week. I don't have the receipts because I am a moron.
I can't afford £45 each on clarkes shoes. I have looked in all the charity shops but school shoes are never sent in. Are they all just shit?
Considering just sending them in converse because at least they last and look alright even when they are tattered and old. and converse are easy enough to find on second hand market places.
Am I the only one? I thought 20 quid was a lot, I usually go for the 12 pound ones but thought I'd go more expensive thinking they would last better. Ha!
Also, I am worried about spending more money and still getting the same results.
I never have this problem with home shoes, mostly they last until we outgrow.

Can't afford Clarks new either and have often had to opt for cheaper brands (it's the Discworld Sam Grimes law of economics/boots, which wealthier people don't get often). We live nearish the Clarks shopping village in Street which sometimes has bargains; plus the online Clarks website is worth a look and I know they used to deliver shoes free to upir local Clarks shop; however ebay BNIB (brand new in box) has often been our friend for shoes! I hate clothes shopping with a passion and often go poking about on Ebay when new items are required, or alternatively he clearance sections of websites.

Agree they shouldn't have fallen apart so quickly though - what surfaces have your kids been walking on?!

Clarks have always lasted a school year. I buy on the Clarks outlet website

cookingisoverrated · 10/09/2021 19:01

Take them back. They're not fit for purpose and you can make that clear at customer service.

Exactly this re economics point. Its another way poorer people get hit where it hurts. They would get a cheaper deal if they could buy something laster longing but don't have access to the capital to do it, or sometimes enough spare to save or the time to save as its a need now item. Whereas I took benefit of startrite sale and bought my toddler shoes in the next few sizes at £12 a pop, as I would've paid full price otherwise, alot of people can't afford to. I need to save the ££s less but have the capital to do so. It sucks

Whilst we buy clarks shows in general, I really don’t rate them for school shoes. They didn’t last a term for us and at that price I’d expect them to last a year, particularly because we only bought the reinforced ones.

The last three years we’ve bought these from M&S and they last. They’re leather and good quality.

@RedHelenB

Buy Clarks, they last the year.
I bought clarks. They lasted her 2 and a half days.
Thidwick · 10/09/2021 19:09

What @SoundBar said - barely used Clark’s on eBay. My youngest is in a pair that cost 4.99 plus postage.

Matilda82 · 10/09/2021 19:09

Treads shoes. They lasted the whole of last year. Just bought a new pair half price for £23. Sadly they won't last as DS is 13 so growing like you won't believe , but the shoes are indestructible.

I came here to post the vimes quote too, so true!
livingthegoodlife · 10/09/2021 19:39

Our Clarks shoes lasted exactly one day. The buckle has come clean off. They must be faulty. Taking them back tomorrow.

Faulty shoes aren't the preserve of supermarket shoes! Take the Sainsbury's ones back. I bet they exchange them.

user7012893145776 · 10/09/2021 19:46

I've only found 2 pairs that have lasted a full school year. One pair from Asda and another pair from sports direct (Adidas black trainers) everything else fell apart.

Clarks, pogs, kickers, etc never lasted more than 6 weeks.

Anonymous48 · 10/09/2021 19:53

Do they have to have special shoes just for school? What do they wear when they're not at school?

EmotionalSupportBear · 10/09/2021 19:55

i find shoezones are good for the girls, dd just went into a size 4 (adult size) and the cheap ladies comfort sole ones are great.

DS goes through shoes like water, he wrecks them that quickly i prefer to buy the cheaper £12/15 a pair ones every 6-8 weeks for him, expensive ones didn't last longer and just cost me more/made me more annoyed when he invariably ruined them (he's disabled/dyspraxic so its to do with his gait)

piefacedClique · 10/09/2021 20:07

I usually buy Clark’s but I’ve bought deichmans recently. Can’t tell the difference and they have a buy one get one half price offer

Rach000 · 10/09/2021 20:10

Take them back, you will be able to get a gift card with the money on. I bought my daughter that make from sainsburys last year and they only lasted a few weeks and the sole came away. I also thought they looked good quality. I dont think I had the receipt but got my money back. I would have prob tried another pair if they had her size in but they didn't.

Just buy some asda ones instead, think you have just been unlucky. I think the cheaper supermarket ones are fine. Don't worry about not been able to afford clarks!!

SloopB · 10/09/2021 20:11

My son kills Geox in a matter of weeks. Lovely shoes and he likes the feel but they don't last.

Tangledtresses · 10/09/2021 20:27

@womaninatightspot

I always recommend Geox for school trainers. Definitely outgrown and we've had a few pairs. Somertimes get lucky on amazon for a cheap pair.
Same here! I give them to my friend after a year and they are still going strong with another child
RifRafia · 10/09/2021 20:29

Second the recommendation for Treads shoes, they have a 12-month guarantee, and currently on offer for £25. Really sturdy

maddening · 10/09/2021 20:33

Do you use nectar card? If you have your bank statement with the transaction on and your nectar then they should be able to pinpoint the transaction and refund, you do expect shoes to last more than a week.

notHarris · 10/09/2021 21:03

I won a pair of TREADS shoes last year and absolutely love them, they lasted the year easily and would still be wearable now.
They're on offer at the moment for about £25 a pair so they're not pricey.
Definitely complain to Sainsbury's and get your money back though, that's rubbish!

VVKills27 · 10/09/2021 21:08

Hi OP! What a shame about the shoes-that’s rubbish!

Defo return them to Sainsbury’s - they must be a current range so they should exchange without a receipt or you could show your bank statement.
Ask for a credit voucher if you don’t trust a replacement.

I have 3 boys whose feet seem to go up sizes within minutes - I tend to get smart school shoes in Sports Direct at great prices or EBay - new but old stock is always available, you can get good brands within £20 for sure. Good luck!

Boombadoom · 10/09/2021 21:38

Look on eBay for Clarke’s. Last years were barely worn due to lockdown.

ScandiCandy · 10/09/2021 21:40

Another vote for M&S, I was impressed that their shoes lasted the whole year last year for both children

WilsonandNoodles · 10/09/2021 22:00

I think we have the same shoes and same problem. We had toe zone last year and they were great so I deliberately sent my husband to get some this time. The sole is completely different, more foam like and after 1 wear they looked like this.
