School shoes haven't lasted a week

Smartphonetoomuchoo · 10/09/2021 16:21

£20 in sainsburies which i thought looked quite sturdy. Well they lasted a grand total of 5 days. How can this be? The sole is ripped up after a week. I don't have the receipts because I am a moron.
I can't afford £45 each on clarkes shoes. I have looked in all the charity shops but school shoes are never sent in. Are they all just shit?
Considering just sending them in converse because at least they last and look alright even when they are tattered and old. and converse are easy enough to find on second hand market places.
Am I the only one? I thought 20 quid was a lot, I usually go for the 12 pound ones but thought I'd go more expensive thinking they would last better. Ha!
Also, I am worried about spending more money and still getting the same results.
I never have this problem with home shoes, mostly they last until we outgrow.

Definitely take them back. I doubt they’ll argue with you.
M&S are really good for school shoes

listsandbudgets · 10/09/2021 16:30

Could you stretch to Treads shoes - they've got a sale on at the moment with nearly everything at £25. I bought a pair for DS and they seem reasonably hard wearing

Glittertwins · 10/09/2021 16:31

@RedHelenB

Buy Clarks, they last the year.
After 2 days of school, I've just had return DD's Clarks shoes as she tripped over and the top of the sole ripped away from the rest of the shoe. Not quite what anyone expected but sorted out.
Alloftheboys · 10/09/2021 16:31

Agree with a PP who said about Treads. Most styles are £24.95 and they have a 12 month guarantee (covers a fault with the shoes but not normal wear and tear)

ISpyCobraKai · 10/09/2021 16:31

I bought Asda or Deichmann for Dd and found they lasted fine.

itsgettingwierd · 10/09/2021 16:32

Literally the third line says she can't afford it!

And I didn't find Clark's were always much better.

Have a look in sports direct. They do a great range of school shoes and they are reasonably priced and always lasted my ds.

Bagelsandbrie · 10/09/2021 16:33

This happened to me a few years ago. I took them back and complained and even without the receipt they refunded me. Worth a try!

ItllBeOverByChristmas · 10/09/2021 16:34

If you have a Nectar card then they'll have a record of the transaction which should help the discussion go smoother, but the magic words "not fit for purpose" mean that they should refund you. It should be fairly obvious from the condition of the shoe interiors that you're not a chancer bringing back last year's knackered shows.

ShoesEverywhere · 10/09/2021 16:34

My daughter has toe zone shoes this year and they still look new.

Was your child using a scooter/bike and using the heel to brake?

foodtoorder · 10/09/2021 16:35

You're not unreasonable and you should take them back.
Clarks and start right both have an outlet which are similar prices and M&S prices aren't much more.
Buy cheap buy twice. Just need to shop around to save money.

Hooplawho · 10/09/2021 16:35

Hope they agree to refund them! You could look on Vinted for clarks shoes at second hand prices?

Smartphonetoomuchoo · 10/09/2021 16:37

Well yes, the inside is like new obviously but they look worse than shoes that have gone through 3 of my children over years.

I feel sick I just can't be bothered to mess about this early. Its embarrassing but then again, its £20!

@ShoesEverywhere no but even I'm finding that hard to believe looking at them.

TokyoSushi · 10/09/2021 16:38

Oh that's unusual, we have the girls version of those and they've lasted us a full year for the last 2 years, we have them again this year!

mistermagpie · 10/09/2021 16:38

£20 is not to be sniffed at OP!!

I do really rate Clarks but £45 is a lot of money, I tend to buy them off eBay and have had some great bargains.

Charley50 · 10/09/2021 16:39

Yes take them back. Not fit for purpose.

It's not embarrassing.. shoes are made to be worn, and to last a while. These ones didn't.
MMAMPWGHAP · 10/09/2021 16:41

I returned somnethging to Sainsbury’s without a receipt. They could track it via my payment card and a guess as to when I had bought it. Did not use Nectar card either.

buffysbuffet · 10/09/2021 16:41

I've got treads for mine this year. £25 a pop a d certainly seem very sturdy, stronger material than I've ever had with school shoes before

And I'd take the Sainsbury's pair back for a refund

MMAMPWGHAP · 10/09/2021 16:41

Would suggest also a wanted ad on Freegle.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 10/09/2021 16:43

Take them back. Under consumer legislation (which? And money supermarket do good summaries) products have to be fit for purpose. You have to prove you bought them from that shop (so if they are exclusive to sainsburys or you have a nectar card or you bought them by card and can show the card details that they can use to trace) but that's it - unless you are asking for a refund because youvr changed your mind , which you're not, then you dont need a receipt. They have to offer to replace or repair once and then if they cant do this they have to give you your money back.

Not many retail staff know this or are allowed to agree to refunds without receipts but I just keep repeating it's the law, and then ask what their complaints escalation procedure is

womaninatightspot · 10/09/2021 16:43

I always recommend Geox for school trainers. Definitely outgrown and we've had a few pairs. Somertimes get lucky on amazon for a cheap pair.

SmashingBlouson · 10/09/2021 16:44

I've bought those shoes for my son before and usually they are quite sturdy.

I think you don't need a receipt to get a refund if something is faulty. I'm sure I've read that on the Martin Lewis site, you just need a refund if you want to take something back when you have changed your mind.

PoolNooodle · 10/09/2021 16:45

Taking them back isn’t embarrassing maybe call or email first if it would make you feel better?

Demelza82 · 10/09/2021 16:45

Can't afford Clarks but can afford Converse?Hmm
